We live in an area with a lot of coyotes and foxes. Our cat is mainly an indoor cat, but goes out some times ... usually for only a few minutes at a time. He pretty much never leaves our yard. This morning, before it was even light out, he escaped. We haven''t seen him since. It is very very unlike him to be gone for more than an hour, let alone 20. I am so sad. I know in my heart of hearts what most likely happened to him. There have been 3 cats that have gone missing in our neighborhood in the last week. Something is catching them. Thinking of something eating my poor kitty makes me so sad. It haunts me.

I hope that it was quick and he didn''t suffer too much.

Let this be a warning to all of you with kitties who live in an area with wild animals. Keep your precious fur balls inside! :-(

Hugs. I hope you are wrong and your kitty turns up. I''m so sorry.

I''m sorry your cat is missing. I just posted a thread about my encounter with a coyote in hangout. Are you planning to put signs up and search at all? You might feel better if you try to find him, you never know if he just maybe wandered too far.

Oh no!!

I hope that isn''t what happened.
Losing a pet is so hard, sending lots of hugs and dust your way!

Oh no. I hope your cat comes home.

I hope your kitty comes home soon! Do hunt around the area for him tho-if he found a building or a place to hide, he is probably too scared to come out.

I hope your cat comes home; how very sad.

Do keep calling and looking for him; miracles can happen.

He is still a male...lets just pray he is taking a little excursion. There is still hope, and I want you to hang on to that. He would want you to as well.

Have you checked with all neighborhood kids? I used to play with others cats for hours.

My thoughts will be of you today. Please know I am sincere.

Thank you all for your thoughts. I am keeping up hope that he will show up. I just have this gut feeling that he isn''t going to, though. :-(

We should have been more careful. The three cats that have gone missing this past week should have been a sign to us to make sure that he didn''t go outside while it was dark.

Thanks again for your thoughts and comfort --- it means a lot.

Poor kitty!

So sorry to hear about this... I really hope he is just on an adventure and will return soon!

I''m so sorry about your kitty. For sure put some signs up.

We live in an area with coyotes, raccoons and bob cats and always keep our cats in at night. Scary thing is all the bob cat sightings Dh and I have had were during the day!

Oh gosh, I hope your cat turns up!!! Big hugs!

I''m hoping your feeling is wrong and he shows up outside of your door. Positive thoughts......

Meanwhile, please keep your doors closed. Too scarey.

Oh let''s hope not!!!!! Gosh that''s awful!!! Hoping he finds his way back to you....Big hugs!!!

GREAT news, everyone! All of the hopeful thinking must have worked, because tonight we heard a very loud meow outside our front door and there he was, just asking to come in! He looks perfectly fine, but he was very very hungry and thirsty. He hasn''t stopped meowing (he''s siamese --- so very vocal) and purring since he has come home. I have NO idea where he has been for the past two days and what he was doing, but I am so glad that he is back! I feel like I should never let him outdoors again, but I know that is not realistic. We tried keeping him inside for 2 years and he was miserable and constantly trying to escape. We are definitely going to put a collar on him and make sure that he doesn''t go out while it is dark outside.

So relieved!

OH MY GOODNESS lily I am SO relieved for you and kitty!!! Wonderful news!!!

SO happy for you!

Good news! Please don''t let your cat go outside again. It''s really the safest solution for them!!!

I am so happy and relieved for you. I was so upset when I read this thread I couldn't even post but was sending good luck and safe return vibes your way!! Thank goodness your kitty is safe and happy! Please please don't let him outside again. It is just not safe with wild animals running around. This was like a warning sign to you so please keep your sweet cat safe!! If you want him to be able to go outside sometimes can you go with him and put a cat leash on him? In NYC I see people walking their cats in Central Park LOL (not that my cats would ever tolerate that but they are totally indoor cats anyway). I am so so happy for you!!!!

I''m breathing a big sigh of relief. I''m glad your cat came home safe. He must''ve just had a wild cat adventure.

Lily -- I'm so glad to read that your cat came back and lived to tell the tale of his adventure! If only you could understand what he has to tell you, right?

I'm not going to lecture you about the outdoor thing because I also have indoor outdoor cats, although I'm in a much safer environment than you. But I will say this... as your cat ages, his reactions will slow down, he'll slow down, and he may lose some of his sight or hearing... and you won't necessarily know it's happening. He won't necessarily be aware of these limitations either unless they get very bad. My oldest cat is now deaf. Fortunately for us all he's aware of this, and although he still loves to go outside, he's also hesitant, and voluntarily limits himself to the back yard and side yards (all enclosed). We've worked out and arrangement where I go outside with him once in the morning and usually twice each evening -- he explores and protects his territory for a few minutes while I relax, and we all go in together (I have second cat). I'll sometimes leave him out there alone, but never for more than a few minutes. He's never been stubborn about staying out or tried to evade me when it's time for him to go in.

I know that probably won't work for your younger cat, but knowing how vocal and strong-headed siamese can be, please consider taking some extraordinary steps -- such as leash training, or providing and enclosed outdoor area -- that will keep him safe even as he ages.

Yay! That''s wonderful news. It''s very difficult to lose a pet, so I''m glad this story had a happy ending. Don''t beat yourself up. I''m no cat person, but it seems to me that it goes against their natural instincts to be inside, they are bound to escape sometimes.

Woo HOO! Hallelujah!

So glad he is home and purring. DARN MEN! They gotta roam. Apparently you GOT ALL THAT, cuz he came back to you!

PSA:

Since we got to catch our breath, I want to bring your attention to something most don''t think of.

Most people assume predators of pets are 4 legged furry beasts. Coyote, Mountain Lion-Puma-Cougar, Wolf-etc. But no one gives the birds of prey any credence. I assure you they snatch and grab far more than they get credit for. They can see your beloved nearly 1/4 mile away and within seconds they swoop down and the snatch is made.

If you hear any Owl''s in your area, they are exceedingly as dangerous as the land roving predators. We have eagles that on the ground YOU WOULD FREAK out at their stature. They stand nearly 4 feet tall! NOT KIDDING. HUGE birds. The owls are evil and have the ability to pierce the prey to paralyze them for easier flight and get away. (My neighbor has lost 6 outdoor cats-witnessed the last snatch and grab. Said she couldn''t believe the cat was larger than the bird!) So size doesn''t matter I guess.

Your pets are being watched not only by land but by air as well. PLEASE be exercise diligence in supervision.

I am very glad your kitty came back but I really wish I didn''t have to see the title of this thread, though, as it turns my stomach.

I know I am not in the majority but I believe that cats belong indoors or on a leash. The freedom to roam can be dangerous especially if you live in an area with coyotes. Glad your kitty lucked out this time.

I thought he''d be back and I''m so glad he is. Maybe he was just trapped in somebody''s garage.

yay lily im so happy he''s home

i live in an area where pets need to be inside all the time too, it would be so hard thinking about what could happen to them...

im so glad he''s safe with you

We are definitely going to try to keep him inside.

He is an older cat -- 10 years old, but you''d never know it. He acts the same as our 2 year old cat. In our old neighborhood it was very safe and he could roam around freely. When we moved to our new neighborhood a few years ago, we knew we needed to keep him inside. He was sooooo upset that he couldn''t go out anymore. He constantly meowed at the door and tried to escape. We thought he would adjust, but after 2 years it was only getting worse and he started peeing all over the house out of anger. He''s been much happier since we started to let him go out, but after all of this I need to keep him inside. We tried the leash thing a while back and he hated it. Maybe we will give that a go again....

Maybe you could get him an enclosed dog run type thing. That way he could be outside, but still be safe? I think they make them with mesh roofs.

My parents have Siamese and use PetSafe to keep them inside the garden - it works really well despite their siamese naughtiness!
