I''ve dealt with two local jewelers. I told them I was willing to spend up to 7k on a diamond. I figured the ring would cost 1k additional (not sure if that is true). The ring will be a solitaire with either white gold or platinum.

Of course, I want a beautiful diamond.
I''m looking for a one carat (can be a little more or less), either princess or asscher cut (the jury of one is still out), colorless, as low as S1 for princess and as low as VS2 for asscher, and the best possible cut.

Both jewelers are telling me about, and showing me, diamonds in my price range. However, as I learn more, it seems that I can spend quite a bit less and still get a beautiful diamond.

It seems that in order to bring the price up to the 7k, they need to increase the clarity and the size.

Perhaps I shouldn''t have told them my price range. Had I known my specs, I would have asked them to find a gorgeous diamond that meet my specs.

I initially said 7k because I was, for some reason or another, under the impression that that''s what I would need to spend to get a beautiful 1 carat diamond.
Can I get a beautiful diamond for far less than 7k?

Thanks,
Mark

Looking through some of the websites of the more highly recommended PS vendors, it appears that you can definitely get a very well cut 1.0 carat princess or asscher diamond in the colors/clarities you posted for a lot less than $7k.

A white gold solitaire ring should not cost you any more than like $250.00 bucks. Even a platinum one wouldn't be more than like $600.00, so there is another 750.00 that you have free as well. man i wish i was in your shoes!

You say you wish you were in my shoes.
After saving for this ring, who can afford shoes?
I'm lucky I still have my feet

LOL...rolling re: shoes....and CAN YOU GET AS BEAUTIFUL ONE CARAT FOR 7000????
Shhhhhheeeyyyeeeaaah. Here is just an example....for about 4600 I think....
If you want to stick to around one carat, you could easily go up to E color....

I just did a price scope search for 1.0 - 1.2, D E and F Vs1 and Vs2...depth up to 72 and table up to 69...there are TONS and so many of them WAY under your budget!!! Happy hunting!!!

Don't overbuy unless you really want a colorless stone. A G/VS2 in a one carat will be plenty white & is quite a nice stone. It will save you some money to put to the honeymoon, down payment for a house, etc.

Agreed...and buy some shoes!

I ran a search for you over at DCD and found a signature series ideal princess cut 1.03 G color VS2 quality for under 5K. Loads of even larger stones graded ideal cut and premium cut for under 5K. G color will look very white, VS2 will be totally eye clean. Don't know how heavy you want to go in a setting but it looks like an average weight platinum solitare mounting is about $450.

That leaves a big chunk of change left over for a fabulous honeymoon!!

Look at the stones at the jeweler to get an idea of what you want then buy online. My local jewelers' price couldn't come close to what I paid on the internet. It would have been at least 50% more.

Actually, prices are often a tad better online, so it would pay if you make a selection here (ok, or anywhere else online as long as teh specs are as good and the prices as good or better) and use it for reference when shopping. This, if you would not consider shopping online in the first place

If anything, I would stay with F/G-VS2, and about 1ct and go for a nicer setting (not that 1k for a platinum solitaire is not enough for that that is).

When given "room" sure any seller worth his salt will try to match your budget !

Hm, maybe you would like following down these links for the respective "case in point"

Asscer and Princess rings... And maybe the stones to match if you so choose: Square1 and Square2

Just my 0.2, of course

I agree. While I can understand why some seek a D or E....I appreciate the value of a F or G more. I can definitely see some color in a G next to an F in a princess....but when are to stones ever going to be next to eachother like that? I think an F or G Vs2 or even Si1 will be awesome. You can either stay around a carat...or if you wanted to spend 7000....then you can go bigger!!!

You have a lot of choices out there. I'd also look online and if you prefer to deal with someone in person, many vendors can probably get you a stone you see online...like I did with GOG!!! Happy hunting!

Bring a printout of your pricescope search to your local jeweler. It might save you some money.

Just don't expect your local jeweler to work on a 2% margin
