I think I found "my" OMC earrings in an RT thread from 2009

Dear PSers,

I posted a few days ago about making an impulsive (but happy) purchase of a pair of OMC earrings from a vintage jewelry vendor at Intergem in Maryland. Since I couldn't afford to buy the earrings on the spot, I'm going to pay them off over the course of some time. Currently the earrings are at EGL, and I should get the prelim report next week (I don't have any experience with labs, so correct me if I'm misunderstanding some aspect of the procedure).

While I'm anxiously waiting for the report, I decided to search PS for similar earrings (cut and size), to see if the price I'm paying (5.5K) is generally fair. And I think I found my exact pair of stones (though in different settings) in a thread from 2009. A PSer won them on ebay for $3.6K, but when she got them appraised they came back with different stats than advertised, so she returned them.

Now I'm wondering... how should I feel about this? One of the biggest bummers is that my illusion is now broken that these earrings as a whole are antique. That the stones came with the settings from long ago. I guess the stones probably are still old, but... :?

Next is the question of the appraisal this PSer received. The color came back very different from what was advertised... I think the appraiser erred on the side of being extra cautious (from what I saw, I doubt they are that warm), plus they were set in yellow gold, so maybe that played a part. When I saw them, they were set in silver (thus adding to my illusion that they are, indeed, antique).

Here's why I think these stones are the same:

1) The pattern of the cut. One stone has 4 "petals" and a larger cutlet, the other has closer to 5-6 unevenly spaced petals and a smaller cutlet. I'll attach pics to show this.

2) The description. The people who sold the earrings to me also said they are "very white for antique stones" and "very clean." Sounds like the description the PSer got in the original ebay sale.

3) And lastly the weight and proportions. How many other OMC pairs are there out there in this general weight class, with that cut?

So, now I'm just not sure how to feel about the situation. Prices for diamonds general went up since 2009, right? So what may have sold for $3600 then, couldn't sell for as much now, right? I wasn't on PS and looking at diamond prices back then, so I can't say.

Should I bring this up with the seller somehow? What would you do?

Lastly, I wanted to thank everyone who commented on my thread from the Intergem show last weekend. I really appreciate it!

- Anya

I dont think they're the same diamonds. Your earring stones are almost cushion shaped, while the 2009 ones are very round.

ForteKitty,

That's a good point! And would be a relief. But the similar patterns... how weird is that?

I thought the same thing - the diamonds are shaped differently - yours seem like more of a cushion shape.

eta: It's really hard to tell from pics, but the tables and crowns look different to me too.

It's not weird at all. I have a few in a band that are patterned the same.

Glad you're feeling better about it! Honestly, the more I look at the stones, the more I see they're different shapes. I think you can rest easy!

Oh, and the earrings are gorgeous!

Thanks Junebug! I'm trying to come up with a way to pick up those pretties the next time the vendor is in the MD-DC-VA area, which will be in a little less than a month! I hope my plan works. I'm ridiculously excited about it  Just gotta chill chill chill till then!

I think there are probably many stones out there that will look similar to the ones you bought because that is what OEC's or OMC's look like! But I agree that I immediately saw that they were not the same stones.

In any event, since diamond prices have risen since 2009, the diamond prices today will be higher. So even if they were the same stones, I don't see a problem with the price increase. All that matters is that your stones are worth what you paid for them now.

Thanks diamondseeker! Good point about the price increase, I wouldn't expect to get those prices now. I guess I was more worried about the stones being once returned, and then re-set, and then presented to me as something they were not... so I feel much better now. Even if the stones aren't actually original to those settings, I'd rather not know about it ;)

Once again I'm reminded that I'm quite a newbie here, gotta live and learn! And stop stressing

Thanks again!

Any antique stones could have been reset multiple times in their lifetime, so I wouldn't worry about that, either! But we all understand stressing over large purchases, so you are in good company!
