I'm the exact opposite of the folks who hang out on this wonderful forum, in that I know NOTHING about jewellery - NADA. And I need help!

The honest truth is, I'm not really into jewellery and I've never really been attracted to it. However, I now find myself in the unenviable position of having to find the best engagement ring that I can afford (more on this later) in the shortest possible time. (I'm getting engaged next month).

I would tell you more about the girl that I'm getting engaged to but words wouldn't really suffice here. (not making this up!)

So moving on to the ring - what do I get?

Basically, my budget is highly limited (well under $1000 preferably but upto $1000 is ok) and I'm looking for something that is very simple, yet modern and elegant. No big rocks here - just something that signifies a commitment to marriage. I don't even know where to start looking for a ring. I was directed to Sams Club and I went there and I found some affordable rings however even the selection there was sufficient to overwhelm me since I don't know what's nice.

Is there anything out there that represents the things that I'm looking for in an engagement ring - Modern (not traditional and stuffy) and elegant (cannot be harshly modern....and must retain those classic elements that are timeless) and simple and classy. A ring that looks good on its own and on a person's finger. (she has very slender fingers)

I'm really big into high value products - clearance, closeouts, discount stores etc. but I don't like to compromise on quality and I'll pay a little more if the value is there. However, I'm not into going all out even on occasion like this - and my wife to be is exactly the same and would dissaprove of anything excessive.

Any recommendations/suggestions?

Sorry if this is too much but I don't know where else to turn to advice! Thanks in advance!!

I''m not the one to ask about diamonds in particular, but I''m sure one of our resident experts will help you out there. However, for a setting that is nice on it''s own and is relatively inexpensive is the traditional 4 or 6 prong solitaire. It''s not stuffy, but timeless and classy. As a bonus, there are a huge variety of wedding bands that can be worn with a solitaire - from a thin (2mm) band to a thick band with diamonds or colored stones of your choice. Good luck on your search and make sure to come back with some handshots when she says yes!

are you looking for a solitaire? or other alternatives like an eternity band or a 5 stone band?

Mmmm....interesting. Do you know what shape of diamond you or your gf like to get?

Since you have a tight limit of $ 1000, I have found you a simple but classy setting
http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/solitaire-rings/ring/item_57-1904_design.asp?pos=1&cid=57&module=setting&item=1904 and a good cut round diamond (assuming you or your gf might like to go with the round shape diamond) http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/solitaire-rings/ring/item_57-1904_design.asp?module=diamond&item=1247448

Take a look and let me know if this is something you might consider of getting.

I believe you can get certain discount by being one of the pricescope members with James Allen.

Wish you the best luck.

http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/D-SI1-Premium-Cut-Oval-Diamond-1190446.asp I like this oval, it has a nice amount of potential. It''s a little more unique than a round and it''s got a nice size for it''s carat weight. Plus it''s $600 and just slightly under a half a carat.

http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/pave/18k-White-Gold-2-2mm-Pave-Set-Diamond-Ring.html and if you can add another $100 to your budget you can get this lovely setting with some additional sparkle and shine with pave.

It would be a VERY lovely, and unique and special ring and it wouldn''t look like a budget ring at all.

Alternately.

This is GORGEOUS, feminine and platinum AND designer. And it''s 910 dollars. And sizable if needed.

And if you aren''t set on a ring that looks like a solitaire... this band is amazing. And Pearlmans does sometimes further discount their Closeouts if you call and ask them. So you might be able to get this one for 1000. Again, unqiue, blingy and platinum.

I would recommend considering a vendor with an upgrade policy.
Best of luck and warm wishes for your engagement!

That oval is beautiful...this would be a stunning little ring!

Guys, thank you so much for the recommendations! I really appreciate.

I have some good news and bad news.

Good news - My budget is now $2500
Bad news - I have less than 2 weeks remaining.

I still need suggestions!! My fiancee (to be) is very petite and would look good with something simple. I''m thinking of a 3 rock design....however, not too raised. Any recommendations along these lines? (any other design recommendations are also much appreciated)

THANK YOU!

One more question - is Sams Club a good place for jewellery?

Gypsy, what do you mean that it is designer?

Is Pearlman''s a designer jeweller? Or are they selling designer jewellery? Does designer jewellery cost more? (like designer clothing? Forgive my absolute ignorance)

Is Pearlman''s a reputable outlet?

What about a three-stone bezel. I think they are very simple and elegant and aren''t usually set too high. Can anyone think of some good pics? I''m looking.

Ok, after some super intensive research on this forum and the internet, I believe I've finally found the style that I'm looking for -

[FORUM VIOLATION. link removed by Moderator]

Just like the ring above but only, instead of 1 center rock, with the 3 rock setting.

BTW, what does everyone think of the ring above? Incase I can't find a similar ring with the 3 rock sitting, I'm strongly considering this ring.

That''s a gorgeous ring Royce! It''s not at all what I was thinking of from your earlier descriptions. Halo rings are definitely on the flashy side and in my opinion not "simple" at all but they are GORGEOUS. Where is that one from and what are the stats and price?

Royce-

That ring is very pretty, but it has a CZ as a center stone. The cost is for the setting.

Halo ring...aha....so that's what it's called.

Kimmy, I'm terrible at these descriptions. Forgive me. After all these days of looking, I sorta have a picture in my head of what I want finally....but I'm still struggling to articulate it.

I'm actually not looking for a halo ring....just that style of band...but with a 3 rock setting in place of the halo setting. Here's another one with the band style I'm looking for -

What I'm looking for is the exact same as above but with 3 rocks instead of 1. And to be honest, I wouldn't even mind just one stone with that kind of band. Any idea where I can find this band style ring at an affordable price? That ring is from the pearlman's website and is $2400.

I had to look up CZ...and now my hopes are shattered. Seriously.

How much do you think they''ll charge to replace the CZ with a real diamond?

No worries, Royce- we''ll help you find something beautiful!

For a real (and well-cut) .75 ct diamond, you''re looking at another $2,500, give or take a few hundred.

With your timeline, I'd suggest buying a loose stone and presenting it to your gf either loose (most vendors will supply a little holder that looks like a loop that will fit over her finger) or set it in a very inexpensive setting. That way you can focus on getting a great stone and your gf can help pick out her own setting.

It just doesn't sound like you have a very firm idea of what she (or you) want in a setting. It might be helpful if you go to stores together to try on settings.

For some reason, I'm unable to reply to a lot of posts. I keep getting errors and can't post even with repeat attempts. Hope this one goes through -

Sarah, I like that setting so much, I'm actually thinking about the reverse idea - getting the setting and buying the diamond later when I can afford it (say first anniv). Of course, it's highly possible that I'm not thinking very clearly at this point.

I'm still in love with this -

Shopping together would have been an option....if we weren't in two different states across the country.

Bree, it is the same photo as before -

Can you see that (^)?

Is this setting going to be too high?

Rochelle Split-Shank
Hmm....that has the 'split shank' design (finally know what it's called) but something about it is off. I can't tell what.

I'm being way too picky for someone with no time and not a whole lot of money either.
