Hello there! Thank you for taking the time to read this =) I''m not sure if I am posting in the right place for this. If I am in the wrong place please accept my apology and direct me to the right place.

My Story:

I am condsidering sellling my engagement ring because I honestly don''t feel comfortable walking around with something this valuable on my finger. It is insured, but knowing that it is quite valuable makes me nervous. I would be more comfortable wearing a wedding band (LoL). I know this may seem a bit strange coming from a woman but I guess I am the exception. I will most likely replace it with something I am a little more comfortable with.

I have been navigating through these forums and see that you are all extremely knowledgeable about diamonds. I hope you can share some of your knowledge with me. I know I can''t expect to get what my husband paid for it but could you please give me some ballpark figures of what it is worth if I were to sell this? What is it''s retail value? I don''t know exactly how much my husband paid for my ring but I have an idea from doing my own research online with the diamond specs....

Here is the information from the GIA report that came with it:

this is a longgg post! sorry =)

It''s a beautiful stone, and you''ll take a real hit trying to sell, even to an end consumer bypassing the middleman - think 30, 40, maybe 50 per cent back if you''re lucky.

Can you leave it in your jewellery box and wear something simpler for now, in case you change your mind in the years to come? That way it''s safe at home and not a target on your hand, and insurance will protect against theft. It seems such a pity to sell something your FI gave you with love if you''re not in the direst need of cash, or something

Wow that is huge difference! I have considered keeping it in a safe place, but then I would still have to pay the annual insurance (a little over $400/year). I''m the type that likes to save where ever I can.
Sometimes I do think it is a pity to sell my engagement ring for the exact reason you stated which is why I''m not sure if I can go through with it. I''m 50/50 right now. I just wanted to start here and see what all you experts have to say and maybe learn more about the diamond I own =)

what if you kept it at a safety deposit box at a bank? i looked into renting one recently and it wasn''t very much. i think it was ~$50 a year for the smallest box? it would be a lot cheaper than paying for insurance and while the bank won''t take responsibility if anything should happen to it while it is in the box, it is extremely unlikely anything will happen to it.

A visit to an independent appraiser with these questions may be very helpful to you. ‘Retail’ price isn’t a very useful piece of information for your situation and possibly not for ANY situation but it’s easy to shop the specs in the database here to see what it would cost to buy one like it from the dealers here with the 'diamond prices' tool at the top of the page. How much it’s worth on the resale market will depend on to whom you plan to selling and how you plan to go about your sale. Not everyone has the same sorts of connections, skills or simple luck and a reality check on what you can expect may prove to be helpful. It's nearly guaranteed to be substantially less than your husband paid but this will depend on how his own shopping experience went.

It may also benefit you to reconsider your choice of insurance companies and/or the appraisal you submitted them if you decide to keep it. $400/year for that seems awfully high.

I also think the safe deposit box is a great way to go. If you''re married, I''m assuming you''re at the age where you have other items you''d want to keep safe in a safe deposit box as well (birth certificates, passports, family heirlooms, mortgage papers, etc.).

Safety deposit box is a really good idea especially since I already have one, thanks =)

How do I go about finding a trustworthy appraiser? Can any of you recommend an insurance company? If what we''re currently paying is too high I definetly want to get a new appraisal and switch insurance companies. Please let me know....thanks =)
