My girlfriend really wants a round stone set in a cathedral setting. I am really not sure what this looks like on a finger. Any pictures or links would be very helpful. Thank you.

There are lots of variations of how the "cathedral" arms can be shaped or how high they extend or whether or not they actually touch the head. Google "cathedral ring setting" and look at images to see some to see what the general idea is. Stuller makes them, Roseco, Adwar, just about anyone. You can look through the e-rings thread in Show Me the Ring forum, too.

Hello, Jeff. A cathedral setting is where the band sort of rises up to meet the solitaire prongs or basket. If you would like to see some examples, go to http://www.whiteflash.com or http://www.pearlmansjewelers.com and search "cathedral". There are several versions (plain, with side stones, etc.) but that will give you the idea and you can work on the specifics from there. You will also get hits if you search "cathedral" here on the forums.

Good luck and happy hunting!

Here's the engagement ring I bought last June. I don't have a shot handy of it on her finger, but as you can see, the band rises up to meet the prongs of the diamond. This basically allows for a wedding band to fit perfectly beside the ring, without the prongs or basket of the diamond preventing it from sitting flush. I imagine it can also provide a little more security from striking the prongs/basket against something? Not sure. But here's a cathedral setting for ya! :)

Thanks :) She loved it! The first words out of her mouth were "Yes!" and then, "Did you talk to my Mom about what I wanted?" Apparently they''d gone ring shopping for fun, and she picked out a setting almost identical to the one i chose...and I did it all by myself. Well, with a lot of Pricescope help with the diamond :D

Here is my 2 ct round solitaire in a Verragio cathedral setting. The first pic is the top view:

here''s my plainer cathedral setting. sorry it''s a bit dirty - but you can see how the ring fits up against the band nicely. my stone is set higher than some others might - i like the way it looks like it''s in a "case", but some might prefer a lower setting - that can be done with the cathedral setting - so don''t worry if you prefer it be snugger in the setting!

that doesn''t really look like a cathedral to me. It looks like a 4 prong setting. Cathedrals usually have more metal swooping up to the diamond.

personally, I prefer more fluid settings with the diamonds set a little lower. but the real question is, what do you like?

As I understand it, here''s the important bit your GF is looking for.

Best of luck!

I like this one more, too, it looks more fluid and elegant.

Settings that perch the diamond at such heights can be problematic in daily wear - they're just asking for the diamond to get bashed and caught on stuff... They do have the advantage of giving the illusion of a slightly larger diamond.

I like BGD''s truth solitaire, the head is to die for.
