Hello,
I''m still on the search for a new center stone and I was at the Diamond District yesterday. I saw alot of Princess center stones in some good price ranges. Thanks to this forum, I''ve been able to better gauge what I''m looking at it and puts me in a better negotiating position. Here is where I''m runnig into a problem however. It is determining cut. I can look at certificates and see if a diamond has a EX/VG/G etc. cut, symmetry, and polish but what do I need to look for with my eyes? All the diamonds I saw yesterday had sparkle and fire, just like the diamonds in the FIRE thread.

What is the technique that everyone here uses to determine if a diamond is a cut that exhibits great fire and brilliance? How can you tell by looking at it? Is there something that you look for?

I''ve still got about 6 weeks left before the return policy on the ring I have expires so I''ve still got some time to shop around.

Here is a picture of the ring I bought several weeks ago. Remember that this ring is IGI certified VS1, I color. The polish is VG and the symmetry is G. How different will a better cut diamond be? What should I look for when I''m comparing this diamond to a better cut one?

Thanks,
Henry

Another pic. These pics were just taken with my Canon camera in my apartment. I don''t have any sunlight here so I''m using the light from the room and the flash from the camera. The ring is sitting on a white envelope.

Last pic. Should I be looking at other princess cut with better cuts side by side to make a better comparison? Does anyone have a picture of a princess with a better cut that i could put next to this one so I can see the differences? Is it easier to determine cut, fire and brilliance on an unmounted stone versus a mounted stone?

Thanks

Try to catch a straight on face up shot!
Right now all the pictures show the Stone at an angle!

Oh, ok. So it''s how the diamond looks straight up that determines if it''s a good cut or not?
