So my boyfriend has already bought a setting for my ER (I know, he told me, ) but we are having trouble finding a diamond. I want an Asscher for sure, but I am very picky. We have 1500 to spend and I want a diamond around .75 or bigger if at all possible.

I have found one, but the table is 67% and the depth is 61.8%.

What I am wondering is how much those measurements will affect what the diamond will look like? I can post pictures of the setting and any input or suggestions from anyone would be gladly appreciated!

By the way, I love this website and I have been addicted to it for more than a year now, but I felt as though I was too young to actually post, but I know the time is getting closer for my boyfriend to pop the question...

sounds blecky
1500 is unrealistic for a well cut asscher in the .75 range even for a J/VS2 which is the absolute lowest id go unless I found an LMN or O/VS in an old style cut.
So either you go more tint, visible inclusions, smaller, not well cut or raise the budget...

$1500 won''t get you a nicely cut asscher that''s a .75

thanks.

Seeing as though this will be my "starter" ring, we are looking for a ring that is realistic in our lives i.e. not the perfect clarity or cut. We are looking for a ring that is pretty to the normal eye (for example, people who are not as educated on diamonds) just to get by for the next couple of years until we afford a (much) larger Asscher. The ring I have picked out is a J, which I love the warmth, but I am wondering how the depth and table will affect it. Please anyone who has seen one, help me out!

Oh geez... I ought not even poke my nose in here, but here goes...

If you have found a stone that YOU are happy with at a price that you can afford... well, as much as I hesitate to say it, that might be the way to go at this moment, especially if you already have a setting that you need to fit it in.

Asking for help in finding a stone will get you some suggestions on good ones, but given your budget that might not do you any good at this point, so belaboring the points about depth and size and other numerical factors are moot if you've already found something that works for you.

(I hope no one misinterprets this post to suggest that I'm throwing the Cs [especially cut] out the window. I'm just trying to be realistic given that there is already a setting that will take a particular size stone, and a specific buget, into account.)

Does the vendor have a trade up policy so that you can get something else down the line, or would you reset this stone (maybe into a pendant) and just replace it with a whole 'nother diamond?

I would possibly keep the ring as a RHR or make it into a pendant. The setting is amazing, it''s princess cut sapphires and filigree on the sides of the band... So I might not want to take apart the ring once it is put together!!

hmmm... I got my .72ct asscher for $1257, it may not be the best cut but it looks pretty good to me. Here are the stats:

Measurements: 4.97 x 4.97 x 3.43 mm
Carat Weight: 0.72

Color Grade: I

Clarity Grade: VS2

Proportions:

Depth: 69.0 %

Table: 58 %

Girdle: Medium to Slightly Thick

Culet: None

Finish:

Polish: Excellent

Symmetry: Good

Fluorescence: Strong Blue

Clarity Characteristics: Crystal, Cloud

I purposely went with the I color with strong blue fluorescence. It makes it face up whiter and its not cloudy at all. When I was looking for an asscher I followed these guidlines(except for the color
2.gif
):

H or higher
vs2 or higher
table 56-63
depth 60-70
polish/sym vg/vg
girdle: med or sl thick or thick
crown height 10%+
l/w of 1.00 to 1.03

So yes...I think it is possible to get around a .75ct asscher for $1500.

Wow! That''s an amazing deal!

Might I ask where you purchased the diamond? I''m helping my future brother-in-law find an Asscher or EC for my sister!

Also, Dee*Jay has a very good point.

To be honest, fancies are clearly not able to be judged based solely on numbers. There are other aspects that can make up for other shortcomings, that you can't just judge based on a budget price and a depth/table percentage. Who cares if it "sounds blecky"? If YOU have seen it, love it, and it's beautiful to YOUR eyes, it shouldn't matter what series of angles and percentages make the sucker up, right?

My diamond isn't necessarily Storm-worthy, and I think it's gorgeous in person.

I found mine at Angara. I took a chance because they didn't have any pictures, but they do have a 30 day return policy. When I got it I was so suprised how clearly I could see the "windmill", and even though its not huge I can still get the 10 miles deep affect. Heres a picture:

ETA: its not the best pic...I believe it is nearly impossible to get a clear picture of an asscher...at least for me anyway.

I don''t know much about asschers but using the rough guidelines posted above it seems a .71-.74 can be yours for $1,880-$1,950 but I know they aren''t stones that Storm would describe as "kicken" by a long shot...not to mention that they''re over your budget.

Since you plan on upgrading shortly anyhow have you considered getting another cut that you can afford to drop colour and clarity in without it being that noticeable and get your beloved asscher when you upgrade?

It''s just lovely, Kristine. We have similar style Asschers, so of course I love yours!

Did you get the setting from Angara, too?

Thank you Lauren! I had the setting custom made at my local jeweler. I know I have said this before, but yours was the reason I wanted a bezel instead of prongs. I absolutely love your ring.

Huh, it looks like Angara has a few asschers near 0.75 and are offering 10% off loose stones just now.

That''s an idea I considered suggesting, as a WF X-factor is the same basic shape, and you can go way down on colour and clarity before it''s noticeable.

However, I''m an Asscher girl at heart, too. And there would have been NO convincing me to look at another shape were I in the same position.

Dolphingirl - your ring is beautiful. I hadn''t heard of angara before now.

I couldn''t get WF or GOG to pull up any stones for me, only JA!

Wow, thank you everyone! This has helped me a ton! When you are mentioning the pricescope price, what does that mean?

Oh and the two rings are beautiful!

sweet asscher
congrates

Well thank you everyone!

I thought I should just post a quick update about my diamond search... We ended up going with a .65 I color VS1 Asscher diamond from James Allen. I have seen a ton of people buy diamonds from there, and the price ended up being a little bit over 1100, which was right in our budget! I just wanted to thank everyone, and when I get the diamond (which will hopefully be soon

) I will be sure to post pictures!

Hey all...this is Laura from Angara...I''ve been reading your posts and many times itched to write something back but here I am...

Just wanted to mention as someone else mentioned already on this site in regards to us, we do make videos for our customers...so you don''t have to buy a diamond sight unseen per se(unless you happen to pick a diamond from the ONE vendor that is not in NY) ...

Check out my little collection on youtube...under nickname JewelryBuzz. Like you folks I love jewelry and diamonds and gemstones...and every possible arrangement they can be made into...so for me it''s more like playing when I make videos for people rather than working...no I have no training in videography but I just make ''em as real to life as possible! Have to say...working with jewelry is THE most fun job out there! I have spoken to some of you who post on here in person on the phone but don''t know all your ''nicks'' on Pricescope...so a Happy New Year to all!
