I just had a heart wrenching dog experience

So he paid the money?

What a jerk. I agree you did what was best for the dog.

I once had an experience where I found a lethargic cat that had such a terrible upper respiratory infection it had huge strings of snot hanging down her face. If you know cats you know this is pretty unusual. And all the cat loving people that lived on the street said she wasn't eating, they had tried to fed her, and they were contemplating what to do. So we called the shelter so she could get medical attention. The owner did wind up picking her up from the shelter ( I think she was chipped) and had to pay her medical bill of course. Turns out he wanted his cat back even though he let her wander the streets and neglected to get her medical attention. So weird. All the poor thing needed in the first place was simple antibiotics.

He must have.
She never reached the deadline to get put up for adoption.

Thanks for the update Kenny. I don't think I posted in this thread, but I was following it. It was really nice of you to take an interest in Elsie and be so concerned about her.

Thanks for the update, kenny. Does that mean that the owner took her back before she had a chance to be adopted?

That definitely was not the outcome I was hoping for, but it is some sort of closure for you and us (your loyal fans  )

Update.

I just called the shelter and they told me Elsie was returned to the owner.

Hope the jerk learned a lesson and takes better care of her.

Rats. Well, on the one hand - Elsie is back in a familiar environment with other pet siblings.... that's good. But, OTOH, she's back with the idiot. I hope this time around, he keeps a closer eye on her. Lets hope you don't run into her and she recognizes you in any way! I think you said he never saw you, so your anonymity is safe, right?? (Unless Elsie spills the beans, of course! )

I never met the owner.
We just had each other's phone numbers.

She never went up for adoption because the owner posted doggie-bail before that deadline.

Too bad the SPCA/Humane society doesn't have a follow up inspection once dogs are returned. I know they don't, but in the interest of animal welfare, it sure would be a good plan. Unfortunately, it's all budget based. Too bad.

Are you ok with the end result? Not that you could change it in any way, but does this make you feel settled or unsettled? No matter what, we still get attached to these critters, don't we???

The guy was a complete jerk to me, but judging by Elsie's personality and amazingly sweet disposition he must be good to her.
I did what I could and am at peace with the outcome.

Had she gone up for adoption I think I would have been torn.
I already have to clean up after two dogs, a parrot and a man.

Sometimes, it's a thankless life we lead!
