I have it narrowed down to two - which would you pick?

Hi all!

Which of these would you pick, taking all things into consideration. It seems the 2.51 is AGS Cut 0, and very good across the HCA. The 2.86 is AGS cut 1, and excellent across the HCA. I am down to the wire, any and all opinions GREATLY APPRECIATED:

1) 2.51 H VS2 7900$/ Carat

56% Table 60.6% Depth
Thin to medium girdle
Culet None Fluor None
Crown angle 35.2, Crown height 14.9%
Pavill angle 41.0, Pavill depth 43.1 %
Excellent Symmetry Excellent Polish

2) 2.86 H VS2 8300$/ Carat

56% Table 59.5% depth
Thin, faceted girdle
Culet None Fluor none
Crown angle 33.2, Crown height 14.8%
Pavill angle 40.7, Pavill depth 42.5%
Very good symmetry Excellent Polish

Which of these do you think is the best DEAL, carat for carat, and which do you think will look the best? Which is REALLY the better cut, or am I splitting hairs here?

Thanks
Jon

Particularly would value hearing from Rich, CutNut, and Rhino, who have been invaluable to my quest so far already. I never would have bought online without you guys, and if I had, I am sure I would have bought a real dog.

Hiya!

If money is not an issue. I'd choose #2. Numbers combo is very sweet and the carat & depth difference will make quite a difference in diameter. You didn't measurements, but I guess the size difference will be about 0.3-0.4mm... This will be pretty noticeable.
Yes, stone #1 is AGS0, but as a matter of fact I prefer the proportions of the 2.86. The crown is not as steep and the 33.2'/40.7' will be a killer combo!

Yes, sorry here are the dimensions:

Stone 1:

8.82*8.86*5.36

Stone 2:

9.29*9.34*5.54

So as I expect there's about a 0.4mm difference... I assure you it's pretty noticeable.
Since you're making a major purchase and the price difference is small and quality is the same or better, I think this bigger stone may be calling you!

To be honest I'm not excited about either.

The first is a classic steep/deep and with 35 degree crown angles and a 41 pavilion angle you are GUARANTEED a ring of death under the table.

While the 2nd stone will guarantee less leakage my experience with those shallow crown angles (or vice versa those pavilion angles) is a stark difference in contrast (as in less contrast) affecting the brilliance in diffuse/ambient light. Of course we have no idea of any presence of optical symmetry within each of these so there is a "?" surrounding that too. I've recently scanned in 2 stones for educational purposes that are of the shallow crown/pavilion type and do score incredible on the HCA (.3 and .6 respectively) so if you'd like to see examples of their optical results drop me an email and I'll send you a link.

If those were the last 2 diamonds in the world I'd probably suggest the 2.86ct more than the 2.51 although personally I'd pass on both as I'm not a gamblin man.

My .02c

Hmm if those were the only 2 choices...definitely #2.

The numbers look better than #1 definitely!

Sounds though you are looking at spending around $24k on this stone. I would be sure you are spending that on the right stone. It seems harder to find larger well-cut stones, so maybe these two are some of the best you have found out there...but be sure you are happy with the purchase because its huge.

I ran a quick cut search and don't know how you feel about online purchasing, but GOG has a 2.37c H VS2 H&A that scores 1.5EX on the HCA for around $21500. That's not bad at all for something you know will be excellently cut and that you have all the pictures and images on to prove it.

There wasn't much else in the search I pulled--but NiceIce did have a 2.35c for $25000, I think it was G VS1? It seems harder to find those well-cut larger stones in the online searches...

Best of luck!

I'd go with number 2 as well. You have a definite size advantage and a better optically performing stone as well. You will lose a bit of contrast effect with the shallower crown angle, but in my opinion will make up for it with a greater non-leakage factor.

The visual test (when you observe it with your eyes) will be the deciding factor. Be sure and purchase the stone with a right-of-return period, and you can't lose.
