I got the prongs fixed on my engagement ring. Does it still look bad or does it look okay?

Hello. I am new to diamond rings. My now husband proposed to me in February and got my ring online through Diamonds Direct. We had a short engagement and got married in May. In the past few months I had noticed my engagement ring getting caught on things sometimes or strands of fabric getting stuck near the prongs.

It had been bothering me as of late and every time I would hold up my ring against a light as a backdrop and look, I noticed gaps between some of the prongs. I finally went into Diamonds Direct today to ask about this (and also sizing down my ring.) I’ve attached pictures I took of the ring last night against our kitchen light and focused on it for a “before” and then a todays “after” an employee brought it to the back and had someone fix the prongs. I tried to take similar angled shots. I explained to the employee the strands of fabric getting caught and I noticed gaps on the prongs and that maybe even the setting of the diamond is a little crooked too…she said it wasn’t but that they could get someone to press down on the prongs more.

Does this look any better, or do they still need to fix the prongs? Does it look crooked at all? When the employee gave me back my ring, she said if it is still getting caught on things to bring it back and they can fix it again. I don’t know if I am being picky or if I’m looking too much at it. I would love to get some opinions. I hope my pictures help. My engagement ring is 6 prongs. Thank you in advance!

At the minimum - the Bottom right photo of your ‘after’ collage is clear they aren’t fixed good enough. And no amount of ‘pressing down’ will fix that hook.
I’d take it back. Maybe if these photos aren’t good enough for them to see the issue (I have no experience with this company) maybe demonstrate with a piece of thin paper that will obviously slide under the prongs, or thin thread.

Lint free is a different issue than snag free. Your prongs aren’t snag free. Snags will cause issues.

I’m sorry for the hassle this is making for you. I’d be frustrated too.

Maybe this thread with prong questions I asked a little while ago will help you - hopefully it will be of something help in communicating the issue with your vendor.

Thank you for your response! I had a feeling, I just wasn’t sure. I tried to take some additional
photos with the ring against a different light. Just want to make sure we are talking about the same thing, the gaps with the prongs on top of the diamond? I will take a look at the link you shared.

I’d rather them not press down on it more as I don’t want the diamond to get damaged. What should I say when I go back besides that there are still some gaps? I don’t know jewelry very well (specifically diamond rings) and don’t know the right terminology to describe things or how to explain what needs to be fixed still.

The diamond has never been properly seated in the setting. There should have been slots made inside the prongs for the diamond to sit securely in and then they fold the prongs down. I would ask to speak to the manager about this. You don’t have to be an expert to see that this has not been done properly. If you don’t get any help, you might have to take the ring to a proper jeweler to set the diamond correctly. I am sorry this company did this to you; shoddy work is unacceptable!

Really?! Is it possible it looks like this because of the setting and the way the prongs are that my husband chose or not at all? He did not know much about diamond rings either, and asked his brother in law for help when he was shopping online. His brother in law also used this company for his sisters ring and recommended it. My husband had went through their website and followed the steps on how to “create” an engagement ring so I am not sure. I had been worried about this lately and didn’t want to come off as too picky or worrying too much. I haven’t brought this up to him because I don’t want him to think he did something wrong (when in a way it’s the company’s fault?)

No, it is not your husband’s fault. It is the fault of the setter who clearly didn’t do his job very well. Diamonds Direct has many stores - I guess they are like a chain type of store. Probably hit or miss regarding the skill level of some of the employees they hire. Your diamond is not as secure as it should be so I would definitely take it back and demand a better job. A six prong setting should be secure and is not a complex setting to execute - if you know what you are doing. If they have already attempted to make grooves in the setting, they might need to replace the entire head and start over. Thank goodness you paid close attention to your ring and knew something wasn’t right! If you don’t get satisfaction from them, find a good bench jeweler to help you make the ring right. Don’t feel bad or guilty for wanting a job done right - neither you nor your husband is to blame for shoddy work.

Thank you for letting me know. I can certainly go back tomorrow to speak with someone. I am just a little taken aback now because I had no idea it wasn’t properly seated in the setting! :( As mentioned above, I’ve only had my engagement ring for a few months. In the beginning I was very excited to have it and love it dearly and still do. It’s just lately I’ve been looking more closely at it and felt that something was wrong.

When I go back tomorrow should I tell them that it needs to be reset the setting or replace it? I found the setting online to see how it looks there and these are the two pictures they show of it. Are these considered accurate and the diamond properly seated? I would say mine looks more like the second picture with the ring on the side/angle, but now I’m not sure anymore…I really appreciate you bringing this to my attention.

The diamond looks like it has been seated but the prongs don’t look like they bend over the diamond. That may be the design of the ring. At any rate, I would at the very least want a new head if not a new ring. I would tell the manager that I have no faith in the setting work that has been done - and rightfully so. Good luck and let us know how it works out for you!

Thank you, I will go back in tomorrow with what you have told me and see what they say...I appreciate your help very much!

Good luck - they need to make your ring perfect! You clearly love it and just want it right and secure. You deserve that!
