for $14,950 out the door. $14,000 plus tax.

I just found out about this forum and would love to hear what you guys think.

The Jeweler got the diamond from this place and first quoted me $17,000 out the door but then I called up the wholesaler and after talking to him about the diamond, I offered the the Jeweler $14,000 plus tax. After about two hrs, he agreed and sold me the diamond.

The other thing is I DON''T have the cert yet. He said he has to get it from the wholesaler and I assume it''s okay????

This Jeweler is not a family jeweler so I don''t know anything about his record.

What do you guys think? Thanks so much

I don't think most people here would have recommended that you buy this diamond. First, it's graded by EGL, so the conventional wisdom is that the stone is probably closer to an F/G I1/I2. You should definitely take it to an independent appraiser to have it checked out (you can find one using the links above). Second, you didn't mention getting any pics or additional information. How does the stone look compared to others? Are the inclusions visible (e.g., is it eye clean)? Third, it only scores a 5.3 on the HCA. Most people here like to get a stone that scores a 2 or below. That said, a quick search on the pricescope engine shows that you probably didn't overpay for it, so if you're happy with it, then that's probably what matters most. The HCA results probably sum it up best:

5.3 - Good - Only if price is your main criterion

Well the cert is an EGL and I have seen on Pricescope people say the color comes back appraised different such as the cert saying E and it a G or H. I don't think there is a lot you can know about that stone by just looking at it; it may not be a very good cut.

I would use this tool to search and find a beautiful diamond picking excellent excellent in your search http://www.pricescope.com/sift.aspx

Unless they give you more info then you can't really know what kind of diamond you will get and it may not be eye clean.

ETA: I see the above poster found the numbers to plug into the HCA; I would not buy that stone. Look using the tool I listen above

When I look at the stone from naked eye, it truly looks beautiful. I was skeptical about EGL has well but some say that egl can give you good value and some say to avoid it. I have already bought the diamond so I can''t really do anything now but by getting some opinions from you guys I can sleep at night knowing that I didn''t get ripped for this piece.

thanks skippy, I looked at the diamond in the jewelry store and I looked at it for a while before deciding it''s the one. the printout the jeweler gave me had wholesaler''s web address so I was like why not call them up and see what they would sell it at..the wholesaler said going rate for 2+ carat is $6,000 a carat making this diamond little over $13,600. So I went back to the jewelry store and offered $14,000 plus tax

With all of the aforementioned caveats, I don''t think you were ripped off. So sleep well if you are happy with the diamond

The diamond posted below comes closest to the specs of your stone. With the PS discount, it would be $11,860. It's a tiny bit smaller than your diamond, but it appears to be a much better cut and comes with an AGS cert (a much more respected lab than EGL). Plus, it's quite a lot less expensive. That said, if you've seen your diamond and love the way it looks, that's all that matters! Hope this helps.

ETA Just saw that you really love the diamond. Really and truly, that's all that matters. Please disregard what I've said above. Congrats on your new stone!

Welcome!

You can check your pricing with the search tool above, EGL graded diamonds often have a lower pricetag than GIA and AGS. Online prices are often less than with a jewellery store. It looks to have not scored well on the HCA, however EGL uses percentages which aren't as accurate as angles, but the HCA is a predictor of performance, rather than an individual evaluator, as there are factors it can't see.

However this diamond looks possibly to be a nice make of diamond, we normally see the superideals routinely here! But the main thing is this, you bought with your eyes what you felt was a beautiful diamond, and that is the most important thing! Nice size too!! Numbers are one thing, but as long as you love your large and beautiful diamond, that is all that matters!

We would love some pics if you can!

I would like to get the diamond appraised but how can I know for sure that the jeweler is unbiased? Do I just take it to another Jewelry store or are there appraisers that do just that? Thanks

Not exactly. That diamond is graded by GIA. EGL typically does not command as much. You should search for other EGL diamonds to get a comparable.

And you should get an independent appraiser (i.e., one who does not also sell jewelry). You can find one near you by going here: https://www.pricescope.com/appr_list.aspx

You take it to an independent appraiser. You can find one in your area by clicking on resources and then clicking on appraisers. They are unbiased, don't sell diamonds etc...
