My BF knows I am obsessed with educating myself about diamonds and that I will settle for nothing less than the best for our money. So, he sent me on a mission to find my dream setting as well as a diamond vendor. I feel comfortable buying online from Jonathan at GOG, but my BF is still not convinced, so I wanted to have a B&M option. I''ve been to at least 10 B&M here in Atlanta. No place made be comfortable with regard to their quality and knowledge. I would mention an idealscope and they looked at me like I spoke in alien or something. I would ask about he diamonds hearts and arrows and they laughed and said it was just a name brand marketing ploy...YIKES!

well, during this search I found my setting, a Simon G. The woman was very nice. Their price for the mounting was the 2nd lowest and she offered to price match my lowest price. This was all a good sign. She also mentioned that they had loose stones and if I wanted to look, she could show me. So, yesterday, on my way home from work I decided to stop in and look at my setting again and to also look at some stones. I really had no intention of wanting to buy from them, but I figured I would take a look.

She showed me some really pretty stones. She offered to put the her ring in the light machine to show me how florescence looks. She also mentioned that they have a computer that will run a sarin report! I looked around and noticed an idealscope. This place sell hearts on fire stones, so they had one and knew how to use it. So, she brought it over to me so I could look at the stones. This one was OK, but she showed me a hearts on fire and I could finally see the difference with my own eyes!!!

The saleswoman, who was probably in her 50s, said she was very impressed with my diamond knowledge and in all her career had never met a woman who talked about diamonds in a technological way. She had the owners son come over to talk to me. He said, "you must be on pricescope!". HE said he loved that site and sang the praises of GOG. He said he loved how Jonathan educates consumers and offers so much info on the stones. He said he loves all the science behind the stones and he could talk to me about it for ages. I told him what I was looking for and he showed me a version of their hearts and arrows stone. It was already set, so it was harder to get a good image of it. None the less, I told his what I wanted and my walk out the door budget. I told him the prices i''ve found so far and he said that should not be a problem. He told me to email him with all my exact specs and he will look to bring in some stones that meet my criteria.

Anyway, this all gives me confidence again in GOG as well as the confidence to consider buying from the B&M (Brown & Co). I was just really excited to finally find a B&M who not only knew about an idealscope, but talked about Garry. He knew about GOG, Pricescope, etc. Who knew that this could happen!!

MINTVE....sounds like you had a fun fun time! Good for you. it is exciting when that happens.

Your never gonna believe this. But, I was in Sams club the other day. I always try on their rings when they get new ones in. Just for fun. Anywho ....they have an idealscope!! It is sitting right next to a hearts and arrows diamond that they have not ever had before. However, she had no idea how it worked...but, they did have it!

wow! maybe more places will start using them when they show stones. It was fun to talk to someone who loves all the science of diamonds. It gave me confidence b/c they now know I am a serious consumer who will settle for nothing sub par and I will find the best price, best stone for my money.

That's great Mintve! How nice to find a knowledgeable jeweler and someone you can trust! There’s nothing worse than dealing with a SA who knows less than you do!

Can’t wait to hear how your shopping progresses! <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com

That is great. I''ve found two B&Ms with ideal scopes. One sold Hearts on Fire at the time, which explains why the sales associates were more educated about H&A. The other was Helzberg, but I''m not sure if they called the tool and "ideal scope" but it worked like one.

My dear, you have stumbled upon an absolute goldmine. Take full advantage of it, you lucky duck. Most of us would kill to have what you just found!

(nothing against our fabulous online vendors, who would all agree the ideal situation is to buy local)

I brought my idealscope and loupe with me when picking out my perfect diamond -- and they were extremely helpful with all of my obessive diamond questions.... Great people, and great prices -- you cannot go wrong with them -- they can get you whatever info you need to be comfortable with your purchase. What an amazing resource to have right in Atlanta!!

I will have to ask him why he does not post here. I do not think they have an online store at the moment, so perhaps that is why.

I definitely think you will!

Honestly, I am just green with envy.

Just be sure the vendor isn't confusing the H&A viewer with an Idealscope. The H&A viewer only shows the hearts and arrows for symmetry while the Idealscope shows light leakage. Looking through the eye hole, the picture looks similiar but the tool looks slightly different. It is possible for a H&A stone to not be a stunner. My local HoF dealer has H&A viewers but no Idealscopes.

Good point Chrono, but since he''s so familiar with PS and all that goes on here, I''m thinking it''s really an IS.

Good point. I will have to verify this. thanks for the input :)

Fantastic, Mintve! How exciting!! My jeweler has an idealscope etc and I had no idea what a "find" that was until I started reading about other people''s experiences with B&M''s.

Good for you! It looks as though you are now closing in on the end of this process. Before you know it, you will have a beautiful setting and diamond ... and, now that you''ve found this B&M ... your bf will be happy that he won''t have to deal online. Bonus!

Wow, what an amazing find!!! You might want to consider building a loyal relationship with them over time since they are in your area. I never really know where to go with simple repairs, resizing, polishing, etc. because I don''t trust anyone here in LA. It would be nice to have a good jeweler around that I trust and who know me.

What''s even rarer are customers who bring in print-outs of reference charts etc from ideal-scope.com.

We had one couple come in and one of the stones we showed them was a terrible 60/60, colour H. After about 30 minutes, they decided that they would have bought the stone if it was a higher colour.

They then pulled out the IS reference charts that they had brought, and unknown to them, they were sitting right next to an Ideal-Scope!

Upon looking at the 60/60 under the IS, they promptly changed their mind about the stone.

I''m a little confused as why you dont prescreen the stones for the client with the IS as a value added service?

We usually do, however obviously this case was an exception.

We also give Ideal-Scopes out to our clients, or whoever asks for them (not that anyone does, and the precursor to this is that you actually have to physically come to our office).

WOW. That''s fabulous! I can''t wait to see your ring!
