Hello all,

I've been reading these forums for the past couple weeks and trying to absorb as much info as possible. I think I'm ready to buy a rock!

I'll try to give you as much background info as I can. I'm looking for a RB diamond for a delicate halo setting (which I'll purchase locally). I've got my eye on this Gabriel&Co. setting: http://www.gabrielny.com/engaged/style/ER7252W44JJ -- If not that setting, something very similar.

Simply put, my GF wants the biggest, shiniest rock I can afford. (Can you blame her?) I'm a recent college grad (read: student loans) and my budget for an engagement ring is max $4800. It really wouldn't be smart to put myself any farther into debt at this point, so I'm sticking to what I can afford with savings.

For the past 2 weeks or so I've been scouring PS and other sites trying to find a RB that's close to 1ct. I'd really like to get a 0.9ct or above, and I've seen some diamonds that would fit that bill. I know cut is king, so I've been looking mostly at excellent and very good cut stones that score well on the HCA.

I feel as though I probably shouldn't go below H or I in color, because I don't want there to be a noticeable difference between the main stone and the diamonds on the band. Am I nitpicking here? As far as clarity goes, eye clean is good enough for me. I've seen some SI2 stones in person that would work fine.

I found this 0.99 H VS2 (EGL) stone yesterday via DOW: http://www.diamondsonweb.com/shopping_dd/ddetail.mhtml?id=8183011;lab=EGL;p_min=1000;shape=RB;start=0

The price and size are great! But, I've read about all the grading inconsistencies with EGL stones, and I'm concerned about the color. I'm assuming the clarity is lower than VS2, but I'm willing to settle for less there. I've attached the EGL cert and 10x image, so take a look for yourself.

I think that covers almost everything. I'm not sure if it's worth the gamble on an EGL stone, but it's very tempting. Maybe some of you more diamond savvy folks can help me find the perfect rock? I think $3200 is the max I can do for just the stone and still have some wiggle room with the setting and all.

Thank you! (and sorry I wrote y'all a short novel)

Stick with GIA/AGS. You might not be able to hit the 0.9 or 1ct mark, but you can be assured you are getting what you pay for. Here are a few options from whiteflash:

0.726 I/VS2/ACA for $3098 http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-3034537.htm

0.801 I/SI1/ACA for $3386 http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-3029493.htm

0.81 I/VS2/Expert Selection for $3301 http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-3009059.htm?source=pricescope#

0.8 I/SI1/Expert Selection for $3207 http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-3034180.htm?source=pricescope#

Good luck!

Judging by the 10x image, it's pretty obvious that the EGL stone isn't close to ideal cut, polish and symmetry. Doesn't look like VS2 inclusions, either. But of course, these are the pitfalls of EGL. Take your $3200 and drop in carat a bit for an AGS 0 stone. As others have said, get your money's worth. Bigger isn't better in this case. Also, a well-cut.7-.8 will face up bigger and shine more brilliantly than a poorly cut .99.

Since size matters to her, I would bet money that an upgrade will happen I the future. So wherever you go, make sure there is a liberal upgrade policy. And, go GIA or AGL. Definitely...

Stay away from the EGL stones they cost less but you are really getting a stone that is graded way looser than a GIA or AGS stone. That being said. the above suggested stones in the .70 -.90 range ideal cut is the way you should go. Cut is king and a beautiful halo will make it look larger. If it is ideal cut then it will sparkle and shine as opposed to a larger stone and is not well cut and flat. (it will sparkle in direct sunlight but we want it shiny all the time)

3 Good Old Gold options:

0.80 H SI1 $3,751 http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/11145/

0.82 H VS1 $3,998 http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/11543/

0.80 G SI1 $4,024 http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/10619/

These diamonds hover around 6.0 mm, which probably as big as you're going to get with still-white color. If you go down to J (which I don't recommend) you can hit a carat, but not worth it to me. J is too yellow for my liking, and I wouldn't recommend making it an engagement color unless you're sure the wearer is comfortable with it.

I would probably go with the first one (cheapest), and get a nice platinum solitaire for about $1200.

This is an expert selection stone from WhiteFlash. Hits the price point as an I, SI1 stone. Would be eligible for future upgrades. Would definitely recommend calling them on this stone.

he has a 3k budget for the stone...
