Hello all,

I am looking at a ring that is about .85 tcw. It kind of a cathedral setting with channel set side stones, all Hearts and Arrows cut G or H color I believe. The price of this is roughly about $3,000. I am now looking for a center-stone. I am looking at a Hearts and Arrows triple 0 in a .97 carat. The only thing I am worried about is that it is a I color and a VS2. Is the I color going to be okay. The jeweler said it is close to an H. The price of the stone is about $5300. I was hoping to get an H at least and an SI1 or 2. It is more than I planned on spending. Was hoping i'd get out the door for 8,000, but looks to be a few hundred more. Is that a pretty good price for the center stone?? Is it better to go with a little worse color and little better clarity? Thanks in advance!

Well, I prefer VS2 and H color when possible. But to find a .97 is difficult, so I would probably go for it! Do you have a picture of the setting? It sounds a little high in price.

So, the setting prices are high, the diamond price is suspiciously low. Are you looking at platinum or gold for the setting? I'm also having trouble visualizing it. Here are some setting options for comparison:

http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/engagement-rings/pave-and-side-stones/peggy-18k-white-gold-5359w18

.9 I VS1 with blue fluorescence, which will be lovely $5,100 http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/diamonds/diamond-details/0.901-i-vs1-round-diamond-ags-bl-104061006039

But a .97 I VS2 should be more than $5,300, I think. In terms of comps,
.927 I VS2 $5,800 (and smaller) http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-2763667.htm
.993 H SI1 $6,350 (higher color, lower clarity) http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-2788969.htm
.9 H VS2 ACA $6,500 http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-2829733.htm

Just because something's called an H&A stone, doesn't necessarily mean it's ideal (and there's nobody to "enforce" H&A claims). So I'm personally a bit suspicious that $5,300 seems too low for the diamond, and the setting price seems really high, which just makes me suspicious of the jeweler. I'd recommend taking a look at the vendors I've linked and put together a complete ring with high-quality diamond for less.

It is very hard to explain and I don't have a picture. The ring is round...and then slopes up to the prongs on each side, making it stick up a little further. Inbetween the center stone and the actually round portion that goes on your finger..are 2 little peakaboos.. I think it is just a 14 or 18 kt band. The actual price of it is 2850 and like I said, its all hearts and arrows and .84 tcw. I will try find one similar or maybe draw it in a little bit. I am currently on my smartphone, sorry.

Are all the side diamonds in the ring HN? is their a certificate for the ring Jeweler offering? For the diamond I think you should ask
for the HD Image to know how the color is performing, I think if the stone looks more like H color than it should be good.

Would I be better off getting a diamond in the I with some fluorescence or not? It looks similar to this diamond I guess.. but the side stones are a little bigger, band probably a little wider, it slopes up more to the prong for the center stone, and has the peekaboos in between the prong and ring portion. Also has a little more total carat weight. The channel set stones are also H & A.

http://www.whiteflash.com/engagement-rings/diamond-settings/cathedral-channel-set-diamond-engagement-ring-1223.htm

The stone is a

.97
6.44-6.46 x 3.89
34.1 crown
43.2 pavillion
56.8 table
0 0 0 AGS
I Vs2
No visible Fluorescence

Actually, there is a great stone for you to consider on our Pre-loved forum. It is a diamond recently recut by Brian Gavin and unused.

You could get a 1.16 I SI1 for around the price you are looking at for under 1 ct.

Great "Bang for your buck" with this diamond! Did you get a chance to view this and connect with the seller, Kbrown? Recut by BGD!! Nice size, and great price!

No I never did. I would have to decide on a different setting if I went this route. If I buy just the setting through him, it is going to cost regular price which is like another 800 bucks.

Here are 3 diamonds you could request idealscope images if you are interested. Their gemologist will also tell you their pick of the 3.
