I have been looking for an engagement ring online. My budget is about $2500 for ring and diamond, I just want a classic solitaire setting in 14k white gold, so I figue I can spend about 2300 on a diamond.

I have been looking at I color diamonds - in general to someone who isn't a diamond expert does an I diamond look yellow when not being compared to other diamonds?

I was in a few jewelery stores in the mall and was looking at some of their diamonds like the Leo and Tolvosky cuts and a couple that were rated as an I color (I think by EGS, it wasn't GIA or AGS) looked really yellow. Then I would compare them to other diamonds graded by the same lab as an H (only one step whiter) or also as an I and the other diamonds look colorless (to my eye). The stores even had non-graded diamonds that look much whiter than 2 of the EGS rated I diamonds.

I just don't want to buy a GIA or AGS I diamond online and be able to tell it is yellow, is it true that GIA and AGS are usually one step tougher in color rating?

If you are looking at I, you are looking at the lowest in the "near colourless" range - it may have a tint of colour if compared to higher coloured stones, but you are not going to often see it side by side to a DEFGH, in normal situations! GHI is a very good range of colours to be searching for.

Please consider GIA or AGS stones... and do not be afraid of purchasing online! Many reputable PS vendors here with a lot of wonderful feedback.

$2500 budget is doable - but you may want to allow for a bit more for a simple solitaire setting - maybe in the $300 - $350 range for a simple plain 4 prong solitaire. Put the rest into your diamond. GHI, VS2/SI1 clarity.

Here is a PS thread that has links to a lot of helpful advice - you may find it useful as you start your ering search!

And actually, the "J" stones are still in the "near colorless" range as well. I have a J that is bright white in most lights, and slightly 'vanilla" in other light. I think an excellent GIA/AGS "I" colored stone is a great choice. I think that by itself, in a WG setting, it will look very white and beautiful, especially if is well cut. (In my opinion)

Good luck! And trust the "experts" here on PS. They won't steer you wrong!

Thanks for the replies guys, This is kind of along the lines of what I have been looking at.

About the setting, is it true that 14k is more durable than 18k?

Any advice on how thin of a ring to get, with about a 3/4carat diamond, on a size 4 finger I was thinking of a 1.5mm ring this:
www.jamesallen.com/engagement-ringssolitairering/item_57-8435.asp

Or at largest this 2mm
www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/solitaire/14k-white-gold-2mm-comfort-fit-solitaire-engagement-ring-11043w14.html

Or maybe like a 2mm that tapers down to 1.8 or 1.5mm where the diamond is.

Any advice on where to look for settings, there seems to be a much larger selection of diamonds available of jamesallen, whiteflash, etc than there are of types of rings (especially 14k)

I'd stick with the 2mm band personally. Did either of those diamonds appeal? Its not necessary but if you purchase both stone and setting frDom the same vendor, it's simpler...but not mandatory. You are going for a very simple setting, I dont see a huge advantage with getting that style at a different vendor than the diamond vendor. Who ever yOu purchase from could provide you with something similar.

14k could be somewhat stronger than 18 but both are perfectly suited for an ering. Some people prefer one over the other, same w preferences or platinum over and gold colour.

Does your GF have a preference?

Yeah, I agree it will be alot easier to get the diamond and ring at the same place.

As for metal type, she likes the white gold more than platinum. Do 14k and 18K white gold look the same?

I have heard good things on here about brian gavin and james allen, but is B2C Jewels reputable? I found a couple diamonds on there that I thought look pretty good.

This would be my pick

Diamond:

Setting:

You would have to call for pricescope discount, it may be a hair over budget.

It should be a gorgeous stone, and BGD has an excellent upgrade program if you ever decide to do so

If you are interested I would call to place on hold they tend to sell fast.

I wouldn't worry about the I color. I have an I earring and a J earring each in .75ct and I cannot tell the difference between the two of them side-by-side, nor can I see a difference between either of them in my 2ct H engagement ring stone when I line them up.

If it is a concern, you can always purchase from a vendor with an upgrade policy and upgrade in a few years. I did that with my earrings. I had an I and a J and figured I'd upgrade in color a few years later. I just upgraded, but in size; I wouldn't pay more in color because (to me) it wouldn't be worth it.

Good luck!
