... to think up some good topics, nice general ones so that any debates that ensue cannot be construed as an attack. Leaving out politics and religion, parenting and weddings, leaving diamonds to RT... what are some good thread ideas that don't involve silly things like df asking if we wear padded bras and asking for photos as proof.

I for one cannot think of any right now! But I would love to get a nice intentional debate going about something... something chewy!

Well...my husband has been reading some biographies of the Marquis de Sade in French. This led him to tell me the story of how close de Sade came to being executed by Robespierre before Robespierre himself was executed. I went on to tell him what I was learning about John Milton. I had missed reaing "Paradise Lost" in high school, but knew a lot about the history of the English Civil War period and the Restoration. Were you thinking of topics like these? You are already part of the book club discussing The Moonstone.

I'm sorry for my flip response of this morning, Sara. You posted a really thoughtful topic and I reacted negatively not because of your good effort, but because I was feeling exhausted at the idea of having to work so very hard to find an intelligent topic about which we could have a natural conversation here on Pricescope.

It sounded as if we all would have to stand on our heads!!!

I didn't mean to take it out on you, who were taking positive action against ennui, that we might have to work to find something important to discuss other than politics or religion.

I do think that our book club was a good idea, but I am willing to branch out and think with you about another topic as well.

Great idea.

I'll give it some thought. I can think of vaguely interesting but not too serious or I can think of controversial.... There must be something interesting that is mildly controversial (to allow for debate but not be SO controversial that it leads to negativity)....

Hmmmmm.

There are only two PS-safe topics.

Personally, I have loved all the pet threads. They always make me smile and brighten my day.

Actually Kenny, there are three.

Touche!

I hereby declare that there is absolutely NO topic which cannot result in a mayhem here on PS.
Everyone turn your computers off. :wavey:

WHAT ABOUT MINE????

I guess in his TV show he causes mayhem though.......

Who is he? I'd rescue HIM!

Sorry, this is already veering into the silly. But I like your idea, Cehra. I don't post often, and haven't started a topic in ages, but I'll try to think of something.

I don't say this often, because young is usually a good thing...but I must be getting really old because he does not interest me. He is too young. He looks like a child and I do not find children erotic. I know he has the muscles of post-pubescence, but he doesn't look "old enough" to be of any interest. I would be glad to feed him dinner with my family, though.

Man, now I feel like a dirty old lady! ;)) I meant, I'd rescue him because he looks like a little lost puppy? With great abs? Who is only 10 years younger than me? {dig dig dig} My husband is 45 and has always had a similar baby-face, so it must be my type.

The types of topics I gravitate towards tend to be political/current events in nature. I know that many of them got "down and dirty," but they gave me something to think about. They opened me up to new ways of thinking. I really learned a lot during the last presidential election, for example. Things I don't want to talk about anymore:

--breeders v. shelters--always ends badly
--random and potentially divisive threads over models, keeping up with the Joneses, etc.
--who is my best friend on PS--great way to make people feel excluded
--stirring the pot for the express purpose of stirring the pot--this includes vendors as well as consumers

Well, I guess we know what's been on my mind, don't we  I will need to think of some topics. But, as I said, I enjoy discussions about issues that are current and important in our lives, including personal, national or global concerns. By its nature, it does include politics, cultures and religions.

Yeah, I like meaty topics too.
Topics that matter are more interesting to me.
It's so sad people can't discuss without virtually killing each other, or that we loose perspective and forget that it's just an Internet forum so it does not really matter how upset people get.
Nobody's holding a gun to anyone's head, forcing them to be here; There is an off button.

I guess we have to be satisfied talking about puppies and kittehs.

I believe that we [PS] have lost our way, Kenny. I miss so many people who used to be here. I loved ATW, despite the acrimony. We were real people holding forth on real opinions. I know that PS can't be all things to all people. One of the things that I Iove about PS is that I have received a great deal of support here about mulitple losses in my life and how people have celebrated with me when something good has happened. I do enjoy posting pictures of my furkids and enjoy seeing pics of yours and others. There is a great deal of caring in this community. I would like to see newcomers at least try to understand the culture here before slamming us for intolerance. I think we all have shown a lot of tolerance over the years. I intend to hang in here and I hope that others do too.

Just posting this as a reply because it might be too racy for PS.

"Do you think that minorities should be given job priority because of their race? Why/why not?"

I think it's a valid question that could result in good discussion.

eta~ another one...

"Is it morally right to spend a lot of money on pets, rather than helping people in need?"

I understand what you are saying Risingsun, but I'm not clear what it has to do with my post or the post I quoted.

Deb, I totally agree with you. I am 32 but this guy looks like a teenager, he doesn't look sexy, he just looks young!

Would we get in trouble if we started a thread of pics of hot guys?

Would it matter if a guy or a gal started it?

Kenny - we've had the "which celeb do you think is hot thread" so why not???

Go start it :Up_to_something:

Don't get him in trouble, dragonfly. You have a "good girl" rep; you start it if you support it!

My name's Mud lately.
You start it.

I think this is a great idea. I am going to think on it, and see what I can come up with.

Kenny, no your name isn't mud around here.. If anything I think some good came out of all of these discussions...

We are off to have dinner with DD in Philly. I will have to add this place to the other thread. It's off the beat and track and have heard great things..

Have a nice evening all!!!

Kenny,
I got your stuff mixed in with my stuff. Sorry! I agree that we could use use more in depth topics to discuss. I would be great if we could do so without feelings getting hurt. In other words, I agree with you. Then my stuff came out. It addressed some comments on the original thread that made some statements leveled at long time posters, by newer members who are not aware of some of the history on the boards. It had nothing to do with you :saint:
