I found a gorgeous emerald, no oil or treatment, from Brazil and I can’t stop thinking about it. I get lost in the depth of color! It’s under a carat (which I happen to like smaller, super saturated gemstones) and precision cut... I promised myself I’d hold off on purchases for a while but... maybe I should cheat just a little and come up with a creative excuse to appease my lack of self discipline? What do you think of it? How often do you claim temporary amnesia of your last purchase when you’re eyeing something? Would you cheat for this?

Depends on the price. If it’s way underpriced due to Brazilian origin, I might consider it, but for me, nothing beats the glow of a fine Muzo.

Wow, that is lovely - great sheen! My rule of thumb is that if I don't buy it and instead walk away, but then can't stop thinking about it, I'm allowed to go back and buy it. But I rarely cannot stop thinking about it once I leave, so this works for me (wouldn't work if it was an every day occurrence, lol).

Get it, get it, get it...

If you can afford it - like still comfertably the mortgage/rent, power bill, buy groceries and fill the car up - and it makes your heart sing (like you can't stop thinking aboit it) go ahead and treat yourself
=)2
Ask yourself
If someone else buys it will i kick myself ?

Thanks all! It’s not super expensive (under $600) and I can afford it, just was thinking I‘d wait a bit before buying something. I’m not as familiar with Brazil emeralds. What do you all think of the color and clarity?

I like this blue green. Is it hard to find precision cut emeralds?

I’m not sure if precision cut emeralds are hard to come by.
I’m usually a spinel and tourmaline type but recent started to find rubies and emeralds interesting. I bought a ruby but ended up returning it after seeing it in person. I realized I like rubies in theory and find them fascinating to read about but not my thing in person.

I typically see the light green emeralds and this one seems quite different in saturation which has my attention... but I haven’t seen that many emeralds so I’m curious what others think.

That's a beautiful little emerald, it looks like it has a nice sheen. Are there any other pics of it?
There aren't a shortage of emeralds per say- but they're never going to be particularly 'cheap' if they're good color.
If you keep coming back to it, it's speaking your language and gives you the pitter pat, then why not? Not every stone has to be the perfect specimen, to be the perfect specimen for you.

The cutter had already put it in an 18k setting and she sent me the pictures tonight. She offered to take it back apart but I happen to like this style of setting and it protects the emerald well. I screenshot these pics from her video (I couldn’t get the video itself to save) so hopefully they aren‘t too fuzzy.

She did note that the emerald has some inclusions/fissures but nothing that impacts the integrity of the stone and she said the saturation is better in person. I must say I appreciate her simple photography — no extreme lighting to throw off the color.

I think it’s lovely - is there a return policy in case you don’t like it in person? They are notoriously hard to photograph.

ETA- I am interested to see what you do bc I was searching for an emerald to put in a setting exactly like this but I wanted a sizable one (9-10mm). My budget wouldn’t allow that haha for the saturation I wanted so I got a smaller one and I will do a three stone.

I happen to really like the color in the pics. You won't be able to really judge the inclusions until you set eyes on it. How much is she charging for the setting?

She’s asking around $825 for the entire piece (giving estimate because I’m not sure of rules here for sharing vendor prices). That seemed pretty reasonable to me for a well saturated emerald and 18k... even taking the origin out of it for a moment... but I just want to make sure it’s reasonable.

(Ignore the $600 for the stone I put in an earlier post — that was my confusion.)

I’m the type that shops a long time to find the one incredibly special stone of a particular variety (mostly due to budget). I like this approach because it helps me think long and hard... but it can also cause my analytical brain to go into overdrive... eek! Please tell me this happens to other people and not just me!

Yup, same. I always look and look and looooooooooooooooooook.
I'll pounce if I've got the scratch to do it.
I personally think it's a pretty good price if close to a carat/18k. If it's as nicely hued in hand, then I'm not mad about it.

Good price for that size and color. If it has a good return policy, I would consider it.

I think that sounds like a great price :) Would love to know the vendor but wait until after you make a decision in case there are lurkers/snipers about.

I think it's beautiful and just love the setting - simple and clean.

Do you have an upcoming birthday / anniversary / insert random special occasion you could buy it for, if you need an excuse?

I just decided to buy it. She accepts returns (though I don't expect to use it). I'll keep you all posted! I'm EXCITED!

Yay I am excited to see it! Can you tell us who you bought it from? I'm dying to know I admit  because one day I want a honker in a setting like that. Curious if the person sets other people's stones.

So exciting! I received the ring today and it's beautiful! The setting has a nice weight and the emerald has a lovely glow and excellent cut. The cutter had a colleague friend do the 18k setting -- she rarely sets her stones (a PSer asked about this earlier).

The emerald is unoiled/untreated and while normally I don't have a strong opinion about this, there's something about it naturally having this color and glow directly from the ground that makes me happy. It's definitely small but very mighty!

Get ready for pictures! I'm not great with jewelry photography but in this case, I deliberately used really poor lighting just to see if it still glows.

What a beauty!! I’m not an expert at all but I would have never known it wasn’t Columbian. Would you mind sharing who the vendor/cutter is?

@voce - thank you! That means a lot coming from you :) You have such a good eye!

@Mreader -- Oops -- I know you asked and I meant to include it. She's on IG as yoyogems. She's located in the US which nice and is simply lovely to work with. I'm still learning but I love her cutting and get lost looking at her IG page.

Cool I will follow her. I love that it’s a woman cutter (a field that’s usually male dominated) :) and you were able to support her business.

@Django0413 I love this setting - is the gold brushed or polished?

The color is great and you can’t go wrong with an emerald in yellow gold!
