First of all, I went to this trunk show and was looking at some pretty nice 3+ carat diamonds today... I should say some of them were pretty nice and some of them.... I''d never seen an over 3 carat emerald up close and personal so that was kinda fun but as I was louping it I said WOW that has a HUGE table! And visually it was just *huge* and this woman walks by and says, Oh in an emerald cut you SHOULD have a large table like that and I shrugged and said "eh" LOL It was 78% and IMO WAY too big. I''m not an emerald expert by any stretch but there was no fire at all in the crown, just some in the pavillion. The stone actually looked better when it was upside down. Anyway... the woman who walked by and said that I looked at her and just about started laughing - it was the *same* woman the exact same woman I saw several months ago who told me my cushion wasn''t cut correctly and showed me a modern cushion with a big bugger in the table that was the same price and 1.5 carats smaller and just really ugly. the one woman who stands out in my memory from last september when I was deciding if I''d keep my stone... I took my stone around and talked to literally dozens of people and all of them said keep my stone it''s gorgeous except ONE woman and she''s the woman today who is telling me that an almost 80% table on an emerald is the way it should be. Maybe it should have a big table, maybe I''m not meant to ever have an emerald... but in my head I wouldn''t trust this woman''s opinion as far as I could throw a diamond LOL I don''t know what lab (something blah blah international) she used but her VS diamonds were.... not. LOL I do have to say the angles on her rounds for "premium ideal" were pretty good. Not H&A but pretty tight and I saw an over 3 carat round and it looked so huge! I remember when I was taking my stone around looking at 3 carat rounds and thinking oh they''re not so big... maybe having my stone gone this long its going to come back looking enormous?? The 3 carat emerald was I think 8.5x7.5???? I dunno, larger/deeper than my stone but smaller length/width and it seemed so big... maybe I''m just used to looking at my 53% table and think even emeralds should have a little table like that... boy the big tables definitely give an illusion to a larger stone though! Dang I miss my stone but most of all I think PS has changed me forever... and I don''t think my knowledge or opinions do very well in these stores LOL

My EC has a large table but I love it. To each their own I guess!

Did you by chance attend the same trunk show as Ann? (look for the topic titled Michael B new to me)

Your story reminds me of someone who purchased a OMC with a very large culet. When her fiance took it in to be set in a ring, the jeweler said it was a horrible cut. The guy said well, this is what she wanted. Jeweler said well she''s not going to like the huge culet. Well the gal ended up a little miffed and took it elsewhere to be set. Goes to show you, what some people know.

It also had a very low crown - the ring almost looked like it had this amazing pavillion that just ended in a flat top. If I''d been asked to give a number I would have said it looked like a 90% table! I''m used to seeing my 53% table and the top of the emerald I saw yesterday looked like a skating rink!! I think your ring is beautiful though so don''t take this as an afront to your stone!!

Nooo...... I doubt it LOL I just can''t believe I ran into that same woman.... "oh that''s not how a cushion should be cut - THIS is how a cushion should be cut" bah! I can''t believe it still bothers me too - ugh. I wouldn''t buy a diamond from her... if I hadn''t had to leave to pick up my son from school I would have gladly wasted her time looking at diamonds with no intention of purchase though. I''m a snot!

I think my table is 72% (going off memory). I take no offense. I love my stone. I think I replied b/c there has been many thread lately on how horrible large tables on ECs are. I think you really need to judge them with your own eyes and not base its worthiness on numbers alone. That said you saw this stone and thought it was ugly so that''s ok. I can''t wait to see your stone set by the way!

72 and 78 are still pretty different.... and the stone wasn''t ugly, I just was compelled to take a file to the edges LOL I was pretty surprised it said 78 because it really looked more (maybe that''s the low crown?) because the rest of the stone was gorgeous - the pavillion and the action coming in from the pavillion was very nice, just nothing going on around the crown.... anyway, thank you... :)

I agree there is a difference but many on here think anything above 70% is bad.

to me there are two things that come into play here.... one is that I don''t believe there are any arbitrary lines. Its more like a bell curve.... and the other is personal preference... I''m the first to admit I love a stone that is by all technical standards poop! But I don''t just love it for growing sentimenal factors, I actually love how it performs! I love the stinken bowtie best and how many people HATE them?? I get irritated with conventions and absolutes.... but I think I didn''t like that emerald a bit more once I saw the woman

also.... she didn''t say, "oh 78 is on the high end, but this one is a beauty" she said "oh they SHOULD be that big" meaning 78 is kinda average and they definitely go up from there! She is a cheerleader of HER inventory and has twice now said that poop on a stick is *the way it SHOULD be* and she has no credibility with me at all. I bet there are emeralds out there with 85% tables that look just fine and I do love how modern cushions look, but that doesn''t mean that mine was cut poorly or that 78 tables are in the main zone. Maybe I''m not as much of a diamond snob as I thought, maybe I just feel absolutely incredulous toward *her*!!
