Hypothetical Question: If you could only have "ONE" ring.....

if you could only have ONE ring at this point in your life...

To have or to wear?

To have and look at from time to time: a fine blue sapphire, medium tone and vivid saturation, in an all-original Deco mounting.

To wear (like every day): a big ol' low-color (but not too sallow) step cut diamond set E/W in a palladium WG mounting. Or a nice-color Asscher or Octavia.

A plain gold band. Seriously. With all my beautiful rings, most days I head out of the house wearing a plain gold band on each hand. It's just the most comfortable to me. If I could only have one piece, I'd need something I didn't tire of, that wasn't over-challenging to the eye, something very simple, clean and low effort. Something I could put on hand cream while wearing, swim in, sleep in, and so on. 4.2mm wide and 2.3mm thick. Rounded edges. Comfort fit. 20kt.

This is a great question, and I have enjoyed the responses.

If I could have any ring, and only one (chosen in 2023), I think I would choose a chunky monkey ~4 carat (color down to K’ish, OEC or ACC) in a comfy, thick, 18k YG bezel flush set. Easy to wear and amazing to look at. Fun discussion!

This is me with my 22k Tiffany band. 3.3mm wide comfort fit - low and comfortable and not susceptible to my clumsiness!

If I could keep only one ring it would the the wedding band my late husband put on my finger 3 years ago. Shown here with the engagement ring that would be my second choice.

A 5 ct MRB F color yg solitaire.

For me, if I could only have one ring, it would be a wedding band. May as well have some diamonds on it if it's all I get. I bought this one pre-loved from LoupeTroop not long ago. I don't think I've posted it yet.

If I could only have one ring, I’d like to get my DREAM ring (we are assuming budget is not a concern here) - a 7-10ct emerald cut set with tapered baguettes; of as high a colour and clarity as I can afford (my sweet spot at that size would be around H VS, I think). I would wear that sucker every chance I get except if I’m somewhere unsafe, at which I’d either keep it turned round or I’d leave it at home and go bare finger.

If I have to stick to a ring I already have, I’d go with my mom’s 2ct EC in a baguette halo which she will be giving me soon (so technically not one that I possess, but I will soon!)

I would have a large (4-5 carat) old European or old mine brilliant. It would either be compass set with tab prongs, petal shoulders and a tri-wire shank or in a collet setting.

Just reread the prompt and realised I never answered the why.
I’d choose this because I love old cuts. I don’t change my jewellery frequently - I’ve worn the same stack for the last year for example so I think I’d like to have just a big-ass old cut so I can enjoy the faceting without a loupe.
Also there’s a woman in my yoga class who has a very large EC - 5 carats easily which is not at all common for where I am in NZ. Every time I see her/it, I spend all class trying to get a good look at it.
If I had my own large sparkler, not only would I stop being a stalker weirdo but my yoga practice would improve since I’d be able to focus and maybe I could provide another stealth bling lover magpie with the same enjoyment I get out of sneakily ogling her ring.
That’s my why ☺️

Well, it would be a sad day if I could only have one ring, …but if you held a gun to my head, I would pick Buster the Cluster. I have a 5.62 ct Oec, 4 Kashmir sapphires, 2 Burma rubies and 2 unoiled Columbian Emeralds, etc., but I can catch every color of the rainbow and scratch my husband’s cheek with Buster. And Buster travelled to Manhattan and Brooklyn with the Christie’s Jewelry Jaunt Course, and held her own D4684BE9-DCC7-482E-AA63-0A386E80CE53.jpeg

Oh wow tell me more about the course! How did you enjoy it?

If I could have just one ring it would easily be the ring I have now. A 3 carat I VS1 ACA in a simple six prong tiffany style platinum setting. There is no better cut imho, it goes with all different type of bands- knife edge, comfort fit, diamonds, plain, rose gold, yellow gold, white gold, etc.
It is a VS1 which is mind clean for me and an I which is perfect for me bc a higher color would mean a lot more money and I think I would be afraid to wear my ring if it was worth a lot more.
The design is classic imho (Thank you Tiffany’s) and I’ve always preferred platinum versus white gold bc it’s stronger and heavier to me. 3 carats is big enough for me to feel big but not too big that I’m embarrassed or afraid to wear it.
Yep, this is the one.

I loved it! They are doing another one in London next April. Here is the thread to search on here…I can’t manage to make it be a link.

Oh you are so kind, I’ve actually seen it advertised because I did Christie’s online jewelry history course. It was so good.

What is the London one you’re doing? Is it through Sotheby’s?

No. Christie’s. Not sure if I’m doing it yet. I want to see the itinerary first. It’s another Jeweley Jaunts.

I think I would choose a MRB 5 stone set in platinum but larger than the 2ctw I have now. 3 carats would be nice on my large hands without being over the top. My FY halo feels too big sometimes especially where I live so I need something more practical.
Enjoying all the responses!

5.5mm MRB fancy very dark grey-violet diamond set in a platinum, hand-engraved Edwardian style ring, with a 2.5 mm band and a wire basket with claw prongs. Add surprise cherry red diamonds of approximately 1 mm on the front and back facing sides of the basket. Since you asked.

Have you considered recreating this with lab/moissy?

Can I still wear my (plain platinum) wedding band along with the One Ring? If not, then I guess my One Ring is my wedding band, because I'm never giving that up. If I can add another One Ring, my choice is the same as @Starstruck8's: an exquisite star ruby in a simple 18K yellow gold setting; big enough to see the star clearly, but not so big it's awkward--maybe around 5 to 8 carats; red, not pink; with no diamonds to distract from its beauty or make anyone want to rob me.

For sure with lab diamonds. Problem is that labs are not quite at the dark violet color yet. That’s ok — just a few years ago, all the pink labs were kind of orange-ish and all the blue labs were kind of green-ish. Now technology has improved to include purplish-pink and dark blue labs. So I am hopeful that in a few years we will have dark violet labs.
