Hypothetical Question: If you could only have "ONE" ring.....

Hi PS family, I was driving and thinking about this question this morning, curious as to what you would choose if you could only have ONE ring at this point in your life. No alternate e-rings, anniversary rings, right hand rings etc. Please describe "THE RING" what you would pick and why? The why is more whether it is due to your socioeconomic status?, your activity level? your occupation? your fear of getting robbed....etc.

I'll start....I would get a ~2carat E-W bezel set Oval diamond ring in brushed 18k yellow gold, because the size is wearable everyday for me, and it doesn't look too engagement-ring like, and it is suitable for dressier evens or can be dressed down.

Oh wow! Such an interesting question. It would be a 4 way tie and I would have to do some sort of coin toss or something to pick the one. The contenders would be my grandmother's tree of life ring, my avatar ring, my "big pink" spinel ring and my 3.34 OEC lab diamond ring. If I was on a deserted Island it would be a diamond so I could see all the colors of the rainbow. But if it was a choice where I live all 4 are contenders.

I love this question, thanks for posting it! While I love my 2 carat round brilliant (in my avatar photo…) the ONE for me would be a 2.75-3 carat transitional cut (H,I,J,K, color) in a simple bezel setting.

But this question is hypothetical, so it doesn't have to be something you already own. If you can build your "ONE" ring, would you combine elements you like from these 4 rings? and what would you imagine it looking like?

I would have a large (4-5 carat) old European or old mine brilliant. It would either be compass set with tab prongs, petal shoulders and a tri-wire shank or in a collet setting.

So sorry- I didn't fully understand what you meant, my apologies. I would need to think about it for awhile. So many choices but they all start with an old cut diamond.

Easy! Top quality star ruby (i.e. good balance of bright star, good translucency, clean red colour), about 10mm diameter, simple 18K yellow gold bezel or gypsy setting.

This would be fascinating in the sun (with the star visible), and at least attractive in softer light. As a corundum cab, the stone would be about as robust as a stone can be. For me (as a male) the style would be appropriate, even traditional, just about anywhere. No worries about personal safety - in my experience, very few people know or care about coloured stones, or have any idea what they cost - it's only big diamonds that read as flashy or expensive.

If it was ONE ring, it would literally be my engagement ring (I’m so lucky), but with a bigger unheated ruby because why not, bigger surrounding diamonds, and cleaned up milgrain and detailing, as the piece is antique 1930s. But I wouldn’t change anything aesthetically, and it’s already in my preferred metal, platinum.

The ring is fragile due to its age and I have absolutely toyed with the idea of having an exact replica made with a bigger lab ruby and moissanite side stones, so I don’t have to “baby” it as much and I can wear it to work etc.

This one, because the marquise is my favorite shape (1.03, G color).

This is such a neat question and I've loved reading all the responses so far. If I could only pick one ring (and not an engagement ring and wedding band set) I would pick a diamond band in the 3 carat (give or take) range. It would most likely be graduated step or old cuts as these types of diamonds have my heart. My why echoes yours- can be worn everyday and will go with any occasion (dressed up or dressed down). If I could only wear one ring, I would also want it to be one which clearly showed I was married so that's why I choose a band vs. engagement or cocktail type ring.

Hmm, this is a hard question. I love my AVR avatar ring and the antique asscher ring (never wear the asscher). But a lot of days (maybe 80-90%), I wear a 5 stone diamond band because the halo on the AVR kind of makes it a little much for my very casual daily wear. I'd honestly be happy with a Whiteflash ACA solitaire with a diamond wedding band or a 3 stone ring. I love the antique style rings but I love classic and simple, as well, and that's how I started out long ago (but with a non-ideal cut stone)!

So aside from keeping the AVR, I guess my other choice for one ring would be a three stone ring with center diamond and either diamond or sapphire sides. Center wouldn't be over 2 cts. and maybe less. That's the only other diamond ring I've considered for several years.

It would have to have a neon red spinel, or equivalent ruby included in some way. I end up wearing a band stack everyday, so as much as I'd want a solitaire/three stone etc...
I would probably get a mixed antique cut band @4-4.5mm with diamond, sapphire, and ruby/spinel- that way I have colors/cuts I love represented without ever having to remove it. Yoram has one I've lusted after forever.

I don’t know why I didn’t think of my 3-stone! Yes, that is some thing I can see as a stand-alone ring. It is 1.81 ct center with .5 ct sides and spans my ring finger like a band to show I’m married! I like that idea:) but it is always fun to brainstorm and design new “stand alone” rings!

Well, it would be a sad day if I could only have one ring, …but if you held a gun to my head, I would pick Buster the Cluster. I have a 5.62 ct Oec, 4 Kashmir sapphires, 2 Burma rubies and 2 unoiled Columbian Emeralds, etc., but I can catch every color of the rainbow and scratch my husband’s cheek with Buster. And Buster travelled to Manhattan and Brooklyn with the Christie’s Jewelry Jaunt Course, and held her own D4684BE9-DCC7-482E-AA63-0A386E80CE53.jpeg

If @Rubies-R-Me will ship me her ring collection - I’ll be happy to choose one as my finally-final

I may need a few other members’ collections too, actually. To make a fully informed choice. You know.

This is like choosing a favorite child or a Sophie's choice situation :)

I cannot choose between these two

Fun question...

I would probably go with a 3 stone OEC ring with the center around 1.7 and .6ish sides. That way its still wearable but
I get to see more than one pretty stone. Metal would be brushed yellow gold and set low.

Something like what @jaysonsmom posted.

Great question & I’ve enjoyed reading the answers!

My first impulse was to say I’d get a bigger version of my Tiffany soli, perhaps 2.5ct? But I held off replying to give it more thought & actually, I think I would want a perfectly cut OEC around 3cts, high in colour (E +) high in clarity, in a beautiful antique replica setting to ensure it has the exquisite details but also modern strength & no wear. There is something about a beautifully cut OEC that makes me catch my breath :kiss2:

That's easy for me, as it will be my 1.19ct E VS1 EC in her forever home.

There is a sob story attached to the stone itself, and it is very dear to me.

No other diamond, earth-mined or lab-grown, can trump her in size even though I can afford a bigger stone.

The stone is now set in the setting that I had always wanted - she is the ring in the middle; the other two are my other RHRs for less dressy occasions.

I‘ve been thinking about this since I saw this thread yesterday, had to put a a lot of thought into it. At first I thought maybe a larger emerald cut in a very deco setting, then I remembered that I’ve always wanted an OEC in CVB’s dahlia setting.

However there is one ring that is just so me and encompasses everything I would want and I could never part with. Authentically old, platinum, the epitome of romance. The “why” is all of the above but also because it‘s not ostentatious for my lifestyle and nobody else would have the same ring.

Its probably hard to believe of all the rings in the world this is the one I would pick but here it is….

Sorry no response sooner.. for some reason I don't get notifications when somebody mentions me..:angryfire:
Anyways..
Oh my!! I'm soooo honored yssie!! I feel just the same way about your amazing array of finery! We are truly the mutual bauble admiration society.

I've been thinking about this (excellent!) question, too. I would choose a diamond cut exactly like my current old trannie, only it would be a high-G color, and rather than 2ct, it would be 2.5 or 2.75ct set similarly to what I have—a version of a Harry Winston setting. Similar narrow gold band (very rich, warm 18kt) with a PLT head, and baguette sides. Happy sigh! :kiss2:
