Hypo: would you rather have a luxury car or a luxury ring?

Hmm. 40K total. Well, the car I'd love to have is 33k. So that leaves 7k for a blingtastic CBI 7 stone. I can live with that.

Haha, I would be able to live with that too if I got the discount you get at HPD...just saying.:lol:

I don’t think the OP is actually that far off with cost estimates for what many would consider a luxury car. Not everyone defines luxury cars as Ferrari’s or Porches or Range Rovers. Audi, BMW, and Mercedes all offer base models under 35K. For example, you can buy an Audi A3 or a BMW 2 series for under 35K. Base models of other brands are also around that price point too.

You can also buy these cars new for under 15K.
  • 2018 Hyundai Accent.
  • 2018 Kia Rio sedan.
  • 2018 Ford Fiesta hatchback
  • 2018 Nissan Versa
  • 2018 Mitsubishi Mirage
  • 2018 Fiat 500
  • 2018 Chevrolet Spark.
  • 2018 Toyota Yaris.
For under 20 you can buy a 2018 WV Golf or Jetta, a Honda Civic, a Toyota Corolla and a few models of Subaru. 30K buys a lot of non-luxury brand SUV’s (Toyota RAV4, Ford Escape, VW Tiguan, Subaru Forester).

So I don’t think this is really a moot question. And these are new prices. Certified pre-owned gets you even more car at these price points.

So glad I have found my soulmates @leukolenos and @MonkeysInk!!!

You know the truth behind why I drive an electric car - no gas, no oil changes, more money for shinies!

And also true what someone said about price ranges on "luxury" cars. My CPO BMW was $20-ish. I was stunned to find out how much less it was than my previous minivan.

My first reaction was luxury ring, of course!

Then I realized that I own a semi-luxury car or at least it was when I bought it (Volvo C70 convertible) and don't own a piece of jewelry that costs more than $3k o_O I guess it was easier to justify the car because a car is a necessity....just like it's easier to justify lots of less expensive jewelry bought over time than 1 luxury pieces. But my spending habits have never made a lot of sense. Although part of me thinks its subliminally knowing my husband would notice and question what I spent on a luxury ring over the other purchases :D

a ring !!!! a car is a depreciating asset - but diamonds are forever ;)

Ring!! I’d say skip the car. If he’s nice enough to offer now, he’ll offer again soon and I’ll get the car too, just a bit later. And yeah like everyone else said. He ring is forever, if I want it to be. Car is just a replaceable tool.

B. Just lease a luxury car and have new one every couple years.

I’m just gonna lease a car and take the giant ACA, cool? Lol

HA, truth is, for the right diamond I’ll just walk everywhere.
Think of the money saved on gym equipment/membership. Win win.

Haha this is my approach. I walk/bike everywhere (or take public transportation). Between the walking/biking and one of those doorframe pull-up bars I get plenty of exercise. So saving money on both the cost of a car and a yearly gym membership.

Yes to biking everywhere if you can. In Manhattan I don’t enjoy cycling and don’t let my dh cycle to work either. It’s crazy here. I don’t trust the motorists or pedestrians or other cyclists. Too crowded. But yes to cycling everywhere it’s safe. Kind to the environment and kind to our bodies. Kudos to you. :appl:

Ok I'm the odd man out. My cars have always cost more than my ring of the moment. But I live out in horse country with rutted gravel roads and we get snow and rain. A good safe car is a must; it's kind of difficult to take a ring to work when it's below 0°, there's a foot of fresh powder on the roads and you need to be there at 7am.:o And a ring isn't much help taking a kid to a hockey tournament several hours away in the middle of winter. I blessed my Range Rover Sport on days like that. As for public transportation, I'd seriously go insane if I had to live in a city. I'm just not built for that.

I'm with you! We don't live in the country, but we live in a city in Montana where there isn't any public transportation and there's too many months you can't really walk due to weather. Lol!
I just spent some time in Chicago, and there's no way I'd sport a $30,000 ring there, especially on public transportation. You're just asking to be robbed IMO. Lol!!! My rings aren't even a drop in a bucket compared to most I see here on PS, and I still wore gloves when I was in Chicago to cover them up.
Plus it was cold. Lol!!!

That said, I'd never buy a luxury car either. I'm a practical gal, which means I want something reliable.
The must luxury I will probably ever get is to upgrade my Toyota to a Lexus, or to the Toyota Land Cruiser.

I live in Norway. Cold is a way of life here. No excuses. :lol-2:

Very cool, we spent 18 days in Norway last summer, as far north as Longyerbean, North Cape etc.
So cool to hike on permafrost, but didn't see any polar bears.

Car. No question. But then again I’m a middle aged woman who has been obsessed with cars since she was 12. I’d take the coolest classic car I could get for $35,000 - no question. Not a new one but something with a story that may not be up to modern standards but that makes me smile every time I see it or drive it.

we've upgraded hubby's car since this thread first came around so i guess we need to upgrade my ring also

A car has a useful purpose. A ring is a symbol of love and a decoration.
Both require insurance.
Both can be lost, stolen or damaged.
Both lose value when you take them out of the showroom.
Both spouses can use the car but only one spouse wears the ring.
Both are judged by others.
My pick...a ring of course:lol-2:.

I don’t need a luxury car, I’m happy with my crossover. I spend way more time staring at my diamond than I do in my car :mrgreen2:

I would also pick B. In my opinion a 15k car and 35k car is not the different. Especially since you can get a used 35k car for 15k ( few years old?)

Can we use the entire budget on the ring and just ride with the hubs? ...asking for a friend. ;)

I have to change my car next year, my DF suggested I get a Nissan Leaf to save money and because he knows I want to get an electric car to be more environmentally friendly.
But.. but... !
