Hi Regis, (any relation to philbin?)

Basically, HRD is a very credible and reliable cert.

HRD, is very popular in the Common Wealth,
and europe.

GIA, is internationally recognized, and is considered
as the grand daddy of diamond grading labs.

There has been some dispute about about how GIA & HRD
grade both color and clarity.

Also, many believe that GIA has the handle on grading
polish and symmetry.

If you are a U.S. citizen it is with in your best interests to have a diamond with a GIA cert, because very
few will dispute with those credentials.

But it would still be prudent to have a diamond checked by an independent appraiser just to be sure.

Hi Regis,

Do you have any additional data?

-Crown angle
-Pavilion angle

The table of this diamond does fall slightly
out of the ideal AGS perameters, which are between,
52.4%-57.5%

GIA will not give you any information on the cut (pavilio and crown angles or %).
So the truth is that you have more information on an HRD certificate than on
a GIA cert. But just to check that this stone belongs to the certificate,
you'll have to get it appraised.

Hope this helps,

Trichrome

Hi Regis,

I believe the HCA analyser works much better
with angles, where it gives you the choice of using both.

As for the culet, I'm not sure if an HRD cert specifies
the culet size.

But a GIA does! Sometimes the GIA cert will say none under
culet, but the culet size can be up to 0.08%+

Lastly, the HCA is a great tool for seperating the wheat
from the chaff. It is good for establishing an idea
of where the diamond stands particularly when it falls
out of the ideal range.

Your own personal preference may be for a diamond with an HCA score of 1.5 more rather than one with a lower score of say 0.5.

Hope that helps, and finally make sure what ever choice you make to have the stone examined by an independent
appraiser, just to make sure.

Run a search on Pricescope to check out if the pricing is inline with what you are quoted. At that point (45k), paying a few hundred more or less probably isn't a huge deal, but paying $5k more might be.

Also to decipher the HCA a bit, check out the Cut Advisor link at the top of the forum where you read the messages. Plug in your numbers (make sure to change angle to % if that is the info you have for pav and crown), and then see what comes back. Googleman mentioned your stone is a .6 on the HCA. This means it is VERY EXCELLENT. Anything under 2.0 is excellent, with diamonds closer to 0 as the ideal for the use of the HCA. The HCA will show you its opinion on the fire, scintillation, brilliance and spread of your diamond. It is a good way to separate the good from the bad, and/or help you make the final decision if you are on the fence.

Hope that helps some. Good luck!:wink2:

Okay because I'd rather be looking up diamonds than working, I ran a quick search on cut quality using Pricescope and found the following:

http://search.virtcert.com/cgi/u/1012/v.cgi?stock=129678&_s=1012&_p=sdf348gd743&_c=&_fs=1&prestock=

GIA certified 3.06c SuperbCert diamond
F, VS1: 1.1 on HCA, EX EX EX VG
Table: 56%, Depth: 60.9%
Polish: EX, Symm: EX
Crown Angle: 34.4, Pav Angle: 40.9
Price: $43,300

Yours has better color and clarity, though many would argue whether the difference from E to F and VS1 to VVS2 is worth the extra money. However, since the diamond is larger, it might be your preference that it be extremely clean and white. For $1500 more it sounds worth it to me. Also something to note is that the one I posted would probably be considered an ideal diamond, whereas I think your 58% table puts yours just barely out of the range, BUT it still sounds VERY beautiful and like a great deal. As noted in many posts on the forum, there are many diamond combinations where the result is beautiful. Paper numbers are paper numbers. Seeing is believing!

Hope that helps! :)
