It''s currently held by a "holder" that resembles a ring but I could see that it''s already rusting. I don''t know if this is OK but I would guess not.

Can I carefully wrap the loose diamond in cotton (of course in a safe place)?

The preferred method would be a diamond paper but it doesn''t appear that you have one.
Don''t put it in cotton..it could easily get lost. Use a small zip lock (jewelry size) bag, a hinged jewelry
case or tight case or something that won''t easily be mistaken for trash and thrown out.
And most importantly, don''t forget where you hide the diamond.

I agree with Jeff- make sure to store it carefully!~

We store them mostly in parcel papers, but also in plastic top boxes.
If you are starting a collection, and want to be able to look at them, I like the plastic foam filled boxes- or they even have fancy little boxes with glass windows.
Have a look at this page and see if you can find a display tray you like.

Of you could go to the place on the Kassoy site where they show diamond papers and buy a box ( a shame to buy a whole box just for one though...)

Amen. Too many diamonds have been wrapped in tissue paper or kleenex or cotton, and then mistaken for trash and thrown out.

A five carat red was once thrown out in this manner by the wife of a Jewish diamond dealer in pre-War Germany. It's never been found.

OMG - what would a 5-carat red be worth today?

If I don''t have a plastic case for a gemstone I put it in a zip log bag and keep it in my jewelry box.

So, was he mad at his wife?

What did she say? Sorry Honey.

They were in a hurry, because the Nazi brownshirts were pillaging, looting and burning that night.

It was the infamous night of "Kristallnacht" (night of the broken glass), in November 1938 pre-war Germany.

They went back and searched through the burned rubble of their home many times after that, but never found the diamond.

The dealer said to his wife, "Echhh, oi vey. You are a lot of trouble, my love."

Oh my goodness I cannot even imagine!

thanks guys. I''ll wrap it in cotton, place it in that little zip lock I have then place it inside the diamond-ring box.

i have some loose stones that are still in their holders. I just keep them in the ring section of my jewelry box. if they happen to fall out, at least they''ll be easy to find. Also, there''s no chance of me accidently throwing them out.
