I was already to ship my ring to Leon today. Last minute I thought I would call my insurer-GemShield-because I have not received a renewal notice yet. My policy expires on 4/30. I wanted to make

sure I could renew online if I had to. I asked about shipping it to Leon and was informed that I am only covered while the ring is in my possession. I have called to get a quote from Chubb and went online

for a quote from Jewelers Mutual. However, I am not sure that either of these carriers will insure out of my possession. Does anyone know? Farmers is checking about a policy too. Previously, they told me

they could not insure my ring under my homeowners policy. I would be fine, but registered mail only insures up to 25,000. I could not replace my stone for that. So my choices are, get a new policy if they

will cover. If they do not, and something happens I could be out about 10K.

Has anyone else encountered this problem?

Jewelers Mutual will insure the ring in transit and during the setting process. Give them a call for quicker service!

I believe that you can ship via Brinks if you need more than $25K insurance.

Thanks Dreamer and Mol-I will call them both tomorrow. The closest Brinks is in LA and that''s about 80 miles from home. I remember Bebe had her ring shipped from Leon via Brinks. I am afraid I could
buy a plane ticket cheaper, but I will have to check!

I always wondered if there were more differences in policies between Gem Shield and Jewelers Mutual. I thought the only difference was in pay out. I know JM will send you a check and Gem Shield would
go through the vendor.

I guess it is better I find out now, but what a pain at the last minute! I am anxious to get this process started and done. I checked Brian''s inventory and 25K is just under my size mark so I don''t want to take the
chance! Thank you for the info!

JM actually won''t send you a check - they will replace with like kind and quality and you can choose the vendor.

Who is the insurer then who will send you a check? Is it Chubb? I would want to replace anyway but it is a nice option.

Chubb''s the one.

Grrrrr...maybe I should just talk the red-eye and hand deliver!

You know i was in your situation 2 weeks ago! Michael E gave me a shipping label with Fedex and was able to send it insured that way using his 3rd party shipping insurance policy.. .AND! I was able to ship it overnight express, cause waiting for registered mail would have drove me madly insane!

I have GemShield and unfortunately, they do not cover your ring in shipping transit. And Chubb, I inquire about getting only my ring insured and they are not writing stand alone jewelry policy anymore, only if you are with Chubb already, they will cover your ring. And my home owners insurance flat out refused to insure my ring. It''s a pain to get properly insured our gems and gorgeous pieces!!!

What are you leaning toward???

Well, I did call a local Chubb rep in my area, and they are supposed to call me back today. Brinks was suggested to me, but I believe you have to pick up at their facility. Can''t really see Leon doing that. His
website says that you can''t send to him Fed Ex because they won''t insure your jewelry. But he also can''t have walk-ups due to his insurance, so I don''t know if that makes a difference
So, I will call JM today. The online quote was 100.00 more than my last policy from GemShield. They actually went down. I thought my premium was in the 400 range, but we had changed it from my 1.70 to the 2.57
so it had been 563, went down to 450. JM was 683 with a 2500. deductible. My DH is so bugged. He gets tired of paying insurance premiums, and I think he sees thirty years of this down the road. The whole
process is just so darn aggravating!

So, usps would insure for 25,000. My stone cost less than that, but the appraisal was 37,500. Prices have gone up so I don''t think I could get a like stone for 25K, but technically I would get all my money back.

I guess I will wait to see what Farmers comes up with if anything. We have every known policy under the sun with them it seems. It almost makes me want to give up on the whole Leon thing. If it wasn''t for
sending this to Leon I would probably stay with Gemshield because they are the cheapest. But if I had to send it anywhere I''d be right back here.

Add this mess, to all the normal things of life that have to get done in a day and it makes me nuts! I had the craziest diamond problem dreams all night long. This is way to much dumb stress over something
as (in the big scheme of things) unimportant as a piece of jewelry.

Isn''t this supposed to be fun?

JM definitely insures certain situations where it’s out of your possession, and while it’s in the possession of a jeweler you’ve hired to work on the piece is one of those (often so is transit to and from that jeweler). I’m pretty sure this is true with Gemshield too although I’m less familiar with their policies. Are you talking to someone at Gemshield directly or an agent? Make sure you're correctly understanding their policy, it may not be as big a problem as you're thinking.

On the shipping question, talk to Leon about it. He may be able to arrange the shipping and the insurance during transit as part of his own insurance program. Many jewelers and appraisers have 3rd party policies that cover USPS registered mail and/or FedEx shipments to a higher limit. If not, see if you’ve got an independent appraiser in your neighborhood who can assist with the shipping.

Well, it seems things are smoothing out a bit. I will most likely go with JM because I can do it online today. As soon as I make my payment, I''m covered. I spoke with Leon and I can Fed/ex it to him. In his appt.
section he states he cannot take walk-in client as per his insurance policy and I wanted to make sure he can accept Fed/Ex, no problem.

Much better than waiting 2 weeks for registered mail. So maybe I can get this all done today. It''s starting to get fun again....

For those who have JM on their rings, did your premium go down the second year like mine did with GemShield? That big premium is pretty hard to swallow for my DH-but they do let you split it up x5 so that is
nice. Only a 7 dollar add on.

Neil, a GemShield agent told me by phone that they do not cover at all while the piece is out of your possession. Leon is covered by his policy during the time it is in his shop. So I think I will be ok.

Hi, this is Ralph from Touchstone Insurance; I''m not sure if we are your agent for this policy but regarding the coverage for your jewelry article while in transit; you are in fact covered while in transit as long as you ship the ring using the US Postal Service, or other shipper that is recognized as a safe means of conveyance. The concern that any underwriter would have is that you have taken proper precautions when shipping your article of jewelry. That means using a recognized shipper and making certain that you have properly packaged the article in a secure shipping box and sealing the package securely. The shipper should examine the box and accept it at the shipping office. Most shippers have standards for packaging an article of value. My suggestion is to take whatever minimum insurance that they offer in order to ship the piece in the safest way that the shipper offers. The safest means of doing this is to use registered mail at the USPS. Please understand that when I suggest you take the minimal insurance that the shipper offers I suggest this only as a means of receiving the safest means of transit that the shipper offers. The US Post Office, while not a perfect entity by any means, does have packages signed for at every point along the shipping route by each person touching the package. The packages are also kept in a secure area, separate from other mail. It is also a federal offense to steal from the post office. If you have any further questions please call our number 866 725 1999 and we will be happy to answer any additional questions you have. Also, you should have received a renewal notification from GemShield at this point in time. If you need assistance with renewing we will advise GemShield that you did not receive notification and they will address that issue immediately.

Hi Ralph. Thanks for coming on.

Is Federal Express “recognized as a safe means of conveyance”?

Is it correct that Gemshield only covers things while in the owners possession? In particular, would (or could) a Gemshield insured item be covered while in the possession of a jeweler? I understand, of course, that you have the right to subrogate against the jeweler or THEIR insurer under appropriate circumstances but is a Gemshield consumer protected, even if the jeweler is not?

Note: For those who don't know them, Touchstone Insurance is an agency that represents Gemshield for clients in most, possibly all, states in the US. I believe he's also a Chubb agent. He's one of the best insurance agents out there and yes, there is a difference.

Well, I had the same problem when I shipped my ring to Leon. I was this close to fly over there so I can hand my ring to him direct, but since I have 1 year old baby, it couldn''t be done.
I contacted JM, and the lady said they don''t cover the ring while the ring is in transition.....but if I ship the ring suggested to use USPS Registered Mail, which is the most secured way and the stealing from the mail is the federal offence....
Leon''s website also says to ship via USPS, so that''s what I did. Insurance only goes up to $25000, which is not even the half of what I paid, but I shipped it and hoped it get there and 3 days later it did!

I guess I''m too much for a risk taker and it went o.k. this time, but this whole time the ring was in transit, I didn''t even have my ring insured by any insurance company.(I do now.)

Indeed, Jewelers Mutual does provide coverage during shipment for scheduled items insured under our Personal Jewelry Insurance program. (We don’t provide stand-alone shipment policies. We think that lead to the confusing answer mentioned earlier.)

We recommend Registered Mail because, in our experience, it is the safest way to ship jewelry within the United States. Be aware that the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) requires you to declare the full value when you ship using Registered Mail. The post office will charge you based on that full value, however, the maximum amount that the post office will pay in a loss is $25,000. If you do not declare the full value, the post office most likely will deny your claim.

Express Mail through the USPS is another option we recommend. You do not need to declare a value when you ship using Express Mail.

We have a preferred status with the USPS that permits us to request manual searches for missing packages. That is an outstanding service and has been very successful for our customers.

Please package the jewelry carefully, assuring that you do not use jewelry terms on the outside label. Always use a box – never an envelope – bigger than a pocket. Keep all of your documentation. You would need that information to request a search or file a claim.

Thank you,

Sue Fritz

Well that is funny - I am insured with GemShield and I did send an email almost 2 months ago inquiring about coverage while in transit. i NEVER got a reply, I called and i was told that my ring wouldn't be covered in transit. The rates are awesome, but in all honesty, the service really lacks.

However, thank you for clarifying that a piece would be covered in transit to the jeweler who services the piece in question. So I was given the wrong information then? Oye!!!

Hi, the answer to your question is that you were given the wrong information by whomever you spoke with. We are not in the same office that you spoke with but we are very aware of the policy restrictions. There are no exclusions in the GemShield policy language that prohibit you from sending your jewelry through a common carrier. You must do so in a responsible manner and with a recognized shipping company. Fed Ex, UPS, DHL, the list goes on; the safest way to ship is using the US Post Office''s registered mail service. If you have a time issue the USPS also offers Express Mail delivery as well, but this is not anywhere near as secure as registered mail. You might speak with a postal representative to ask about options. You also need to pack your jewelry in a a box rather than send it in an envelope. Let me know if you have additional questions. I''m sorry if you were given any incorrect information. Please don''t hesitate to call if you need any further information regarding GemShield insurance.

Thanks Ralph for chiming in. I was told by them directly twice that they would NOT cover in transit, so I switched to Jewelers Mutual. That is a bummer, because the price was 200+ more. However, since they
can''t seem to get their facts straight, I will stay with JM. Maybe you could give them a heads up about the misinformation and they could list it in their FAQ section. That is an important difference and a
deciding factor for me. Once I was insured I was able to ship FedEX and my package arrived safely this morning.

Ditto, my policy is sue to renew in July... Some things to think about.

Thank you Tinsure for your reply. I am happy to hear that!

Just wanted to add one more thing to this thread-especially for Amethyste-I looked up my GemShield policy and read it. Under exclusions, #6 it says-Unauthorized instructions to transfer property to any person or to any place. Heads up-that reads to me like it sending it to any jeweler anywhere or leaving it at a jewelers office is NOT covered. Ralph may need to do some additional checking. I did get my policy through
Touchstone when I initially purchased the ring at whiteflash. It was a link on their page. When I upgraded I just called the company directly. Maybe that makes a difference, maybe not.
