So, awhile back I posted a thread about a pear shaped diamond my mom had gifted to me. Her father gave it to her decades ago, and there is no paperwork for the stone. All I know about it is that it's "a little bit over a carat", according to my mom. I'm definitely at novice level when it comes to diamond knowledge, so I don't really know what to think about it other than "it's pretty". I can see some of the bowtie effect at certain angles, but I don't think it's comparable to really bad examples of the phenomenon that I've seen in pictures. I guess I'd be open to having it recut, but I'm not sure if it's necessary for my enjoyment of the stone, and since it's an heirloom I'll probably just keep it as-is.

Here are a couple of pics:

And with my mom's emerald and diamond set (I couldn't resist taking a pic of them, they're just so stunning):

The stone is staying with my mom until I figure out what I want to do with it. It's just more secure over there right now. I know I need to have it certified by GIA and get insurance for the stone before I set it, but I'm so far from knowing how I'd like to set it that I'm going to wait on doing those things.

Honestly, pears aren't exactly my favorite shape. I prefer emerald and heart cuts, so I'm kind of stumped as to how I'd like to set this. I know I want to put it in a ring, and I know I want other stones with it (most likely, I will end up including colored stones). I'm torn between doing an engagement style ring since my original ering is a colored stone, or having is as the centerpiece for a really awesome RHR. If I do an engagement-y ring I'm thinking along the lines of a halo setting in rose gold, or a platinum setting with pear or heart shaped sidestones. If I did a RHR I would do something like the reset Jackie Kennedy engagement ring, with the pear diamond and a pear colored stone as the main focal points. I'm leaning more towards doing something unique rather than traditional with it, but I haven't been able to come up with too much inspiration. I'd really like to get an idea of what I want and what vendor I'd like to go through for the setting so I know how much money we need to start budgeting towards.

Any thoughts on the stone/how I should set it? Thanks in advance :)

Ohh thanks, Enerchi! I will definitely cruise through those threads and see if anything gets the wheels in my head turning.

I'm thinking I'd like it in a ring, that way I can stare at it throughout the day...lol. What do you think about the heart shaped sidestones idea?

I was also thinking of an east-west setting in rose gold, but I don't know if I want this pear to stand alone. My ring size is a pudgy 8 and while I could pull it off as a solitaire, I'm thinking I want more coverage and also a more unique design.

Never seen a pear with heart sidestones before! I like pears with baguettes or pear side stones myself. I think a three stone is a great idea :)

I love 3 stones. I'm with Amy - I have never seen hearts as side stones - do you have examples?

I have seen a lot of gorgeous 3 pear rings - smaller pears on the side. Check out the DBL site - they have lovely pear examples as well. I don't know if the asymmetry of an E/W pear would be something I could get used to. I like the idea, but I'm not sure I wouldn't want to 'straighten it out' over time!

Hopefully you'll find lots of great ideas on the threads! nothing like the thrill of the hunt :D

I don't have examples of a pear with heart shaped stones, but I know a common way to do a pear three stone is to flank it with two smaller pears. I was thinking doing that but with hearts instead, with their bows facing the diamond and points facing out. Maybe bezel set or halos around all the stones to accentuate the shapes of the hearts and the pear? I'm actually really loving the heart shaped side stones idea...and maybe even doing the hearts in an unexpected color, like green (if I did that I would have all the stones bezel set in rose gold). Gahh! It's going to take me FOREVER to decide on one idea! lol!

Best problem to have!!! Sounds like a cool idea - coloured hearts. That would be very unique! Heart pairs may be a bit of a challenge to find tho, but worth the search in the end.

Colored hearts is a neat idea!! Hmm I guess for me - picking a colored stone I go with it wood depend on the color of the pear- if it's colorless then any color- if it has a yellow tint to it I might explore combos in person at a store o see what I liked best.

@Amy's Bling

That's the problem, I have NO idea what the color grade of this diamond is. I think I can see some color in it, but I'm seriously no expert. I put it face down on a sheet of paper but there is a weird metal bracket around the stone so it was hard to tell anything from that. I don't have anything to compare it to, either. Then there's the problem of even finding heart shaped colored stones in a color, size, and shape I like. I'm usually really girly but I'm definitely not feeling pink as the sidestones, it would read kind of cheesy even for me. As for the metal, I'm up for anything other than WG, as I have a mild nickel allergy. I don't know, a lot of factors up in the air!

Hmm , maybe rubies in rose gold?? I think you should take it to a local store and ask to see different gemstones up against it. Even if you go online to a ps vendor for the ring you can get an idea of the gemstones and sizes up against the pear in person.

So many combos!! :)

OMG, rubies in rose gold! SWOON! I'd have to check out pricing factors with the rubies, but that's a good idea!

Would it be too much of a no-no to use a softer stone as side stones? Like maybe green tourmalines? Or mint garnets? They would be bezel-set or halo'd...

I was also thinking of using purple stones, since it's my favorite color and would look good in rose gold! I don't know where I'd find a matching pair of purple, heart shaped spinels or sapphires, though...or mint garnets, or tourmalines for that matter! :cheeky:

You would have to find a vendor to work with and they could find what you are looking for.

How about John Apel's Chloe 1937 under Bridal? And I hesitate to say this, but I mean it with only helpful thoughts to you, it looks a little bit on the skinny side when comparing it to an ideal pear shape. If you love it, great. If it's vintage and interesting and unique, cool. I have a pear and spent a lot of time finding one that I thought was the perfect balance between too fat and too skinny. If you recut it would lose some carat weight and I totally get that too. I just have that OCD thing for fancy cuts I guess...I forgot, Sylvie also makes some pretty settings for pears... :wavey:

I know, it is long. I prefer fatter pears, and I prefer my hearts WAY on the fat side, so I see what you mean. I'm just going to keep it as is, I mean, I didn't pay for the stone - it's been passed down through the family. I'm taking its skinny shape into consideration with the setting...the setting will have to give the illusion of a nicer shape somehow. It's still a pretty stone, and interesting, but not something I would've picked out. I'm thinking something like this, but with hearts as the sidestones:

Love that three stone halo pic!

That looks really pretty. You could go with that or keep up the search...at least you know there is one great setting as a fall back if
you get tired of searching.
