Hi All.
This site is awesome, and it helped me w/ my engagement ring. However, now I have a want to sell my prior engagement ring, and maybe wedding band.

I'm divorced and happily engaged and now I have these rings that just sit here when I'd rather have the money for them, but I don't want to let them go for nothing. SO I figured I list the e-ring on craigslist. I've had some interest but craigslist is shifty to begin w/ and it makes me leery. I thought about consignment, but the only jeweler I trusted locally I felt tried to cheat me (tried to keep the gold buckle on a vintage Tiffany watch band, saying it wasn't gold, when it was).

I had a buyer for my e-ring but when it came time to meet up she suddenly wanted to meet up an hour away to see her friend who was a so-called gemologist. Maybe her friend was, but I had a gut feeling this person would try to say the ring wasn't worth what I cut the price to and it may have been a waste of time. She didn't offer a third party meeting either.

When I purchased the ring (yes I did, long story) it did have some paperwork, but now I can't find it. I know it's not GIA certified. I purchased it as G color and I believe the clarity was SI1.

Is it worth taking to another jeweler for an appraisal? Would taking it to a gemologist for a diamond run down be worth it?

I've had other interest but some ask to meet at a jeweler to make sure it is what it is. That's ok by me, but who pays for it??

Has anyone else done this? The whole thing makes me nervous.

The ring has a 1ct radiant center w/ .40 total on the sides

THANKS

I don't have any advice for how to sell a ring on CL because I wouldn't do it. It's WAY too unsafe. CL is fine for some things, but big ticket items can make you an easy target. Don't do it.

Get a proper valuation done on it by a genuine appraiser (see resources tab above and go to appraisers) and list it on Loupetroop and DiamondBistro and remember to be realistic, what it actually sells for will be half to a third of an insurance valuation.

Yes, it’s worth getting a proper appraisal done but this is primarily for your benefit, not the buyers. It’s a matter of knowing what you have and what you’ll be willing to accept for it. Any buyer with sense is going to want to have it graded by their own expert. They don’t trust you, and by extension your jeweler, for the reasons you don’t trust them. That means that it’s entirely reasonable for them to require an inspection as part of the transaction and yes, this includes the possibility that the ‘gemologist’ isn’t entirely legit. So what? You don’t have to take their advice, that’s why you had it looked at in advance by your own guy. If that ends up killing the deal, so be it. That’s part of the ‘cost’ of doing business on Craigslist.

Is it worth an hour’s drive? That’s a matter of vetting your buyer. Obviously you need to be attentive to security concerns and the like with any Craigslist deal and you don't want to waste your time. Sharks abound. If you’ve got a bad feel about it, don’t do it but, fundamentally, this is not an unreasonable request by your buyer.

In addition to the sites listed above, idonoidont.com is another option.

I have the same opinion . you must get appraised for a better idea of color and clarity. It looks more like an I color from the photo. Than sell ether loupetroups diamond bistro ... you can try ebay but again be realistic in asking price.
