How to make a cushion cut look more round?

Hey all you "BRILLIANT" people!

Sooooo - I've finally found an amazing 2.0 stone that meets all the prespecified critiera. The only issue is that it is a little bit more square than it is rounded. My SO wants it to be rounded.

Do you have any recommendations on how to set the stone so that it will look as rounded as possible?

From what I have seen....the prongs should be small and rounded (see below). Also, if there is a basket it should be small and hidden.

Any other advice or thoughts?

Thank you so much!! :wavey:

You could always go with a hand forged halo and tell the designer that you're looking to round out the appearance.

Actually any custom setting, not just halo, you may be able to achieve a rounded look by explaining what you're looking for.

I think you need to get a cushion that is more rounded, because if it is more square, you aren't going to change that.

A round halo will help it look more round at a distance. I'd also consider a 6 or 8 prong setting. The 4 prongs setting inevitable draws your eyes to the corners making it appear more square than it really it.

The only way to make the shape of any stone look different than it is is to change the line where the contrast between the stone/setting and your skin is the greatest. This means using the metal surrounding the stone to define that contrast line. You can use a bezel which is thicker on the sides and thinner on the corners, a crenellated setting, (which has a multitude of prongs, those on the sides being thicker), or a halo which is thicker on the sides and thinner on the corners.
The attached rendered image shows a halo on a diamond which is about the same shape as yours. The diamond melee on the sides is 1.75mm stepping down to 1.5mm and finally to 1.3mm at the corners. Since the outer edge of the halo is what your eyes use to define the shape of this assembly, the whole thing takes on a more rounded appearance. This is especially true at the real scale shown here.

Warning: If she really wants a round diamond, this may not cut it and may make her think that you aren't listening to her. Take it from experience, you ALWAYS want her to think that you're listening to her, especially on something that's this important.

Thank you all for the ideas. Unfortunately she does not want a halo, so I can't use that...:-S

I'll attach some pictures of stone. What do you think - is it more cushion/pillow-like or more pointy/square? :errrr:

Do you think I'll be able to make it look like the second picture above?

Let me know what you think...Thanks for your thoughts!

I think double prongs on the corners would make it look more rounded. Good quality claw prongs.

Here re some comparative setting styles showing approximately how each would affect the shape of a squarish cushion, (shown as is in the center). The setting on the left has multiple prongs or differing sizes, the thickest being in the middle, the thinnest in the corners. The right side shows double claw prongs. If she doesn't like these the next best choice might be a fluid, vine like style which wraps around the stone, having thicker appendages holding the stone from the sides with thinner vines around the corners. Anything which adds apparent width to the center/sides of the stone will make it appear more rounded.

It seems easier to just buy a round stone or a rounder cushion.

Yep, what I tried to tell him above. This isn't what she wants.

I'm confused. She said she wants a round(er) stone. He buys a square one. :eh:

OP maybe you should chat with GF. She might love this stone, or send you back to the drawing board.

Perfect ending. The diamond looks absolutely lovely!

Pics of settings (prongs) to view were so helpful.
