My mother recently gave me her engagement ring (along with the original appraisal from 1970).
I'm guessing that the figures refer to carat and clarity (but not colour or cut)...

The ring was purchased from and assessed by Mappins in Quebec, Canada.

Do you think it's worth sending the centre diamond to GIA? Or perhaps just getting a local appraisal done of the overall ring.
There isn't a # on the girdle (obviously), so I'm afraid the centre stone could be switched out without my knowledge if I just take it to a local jeweler in Toronto.

If it’s just for insurance valuation purposes, a good jeweler who has appropriate qualifications can give you a valuation with estimated carat, colour and clarity.
A GIA report isn’t a valuation, it will just be an assessment of the actual diamond, so you’ll still need to get a valuation from an appraiser for insurance purposes.
Lovely ring too.

Just stopping by to say how adorable that ring is!

I believe you would have to unmount the stone(s) to get it/them graded and laser engraved by GIA or AGS, so as above, you may want to just use a PS-recommended appraiser.

EDIT: Just re-read your post and realised you know that, d'oh!

@denverappraiser or @oldminer are two active appraisers on the forum, so you'd be in safe hands :)

It depends on your objectives but GIA is probably not very useful and logistically a significant pain. Is this about insurance? Taxes? Resale? Probate? Something else?

Your risk of the appraiser stealing it are rather low but bring up the topic with them and see what they have to say. I don't know the Toronto market but lots of appraisers will do the inspection on single item assignments while you wait and while you watch. Ask.

Just wanted to say that this is a lovely ring and the setting is quite unique.

I agree with @denverappraiser your next steps definitely depends on what you're looking to use the appraisal for. I think that you should be able to tell the appraiser what you're looking to use the appraisal for and they will give you an appraisal that will fit the bill for its use.

Also I don't think that a reputable sales person would switch out your stone, it would not only be unethical, but can cause significant headaches for them in the future.

i have nothing of value to add but just had to say how beautiful her ring is!!!

I just want to add one thing to Denver Appraisers great comment.

Google. Google the appraiser or store you wish to use.

Wink

Thanks everyone!
