how to DIY patina on platinum?

I recently got engaged and now have a beautiful platinum ring which came polished. I love the matte/gray-er/patina finish look, but would prefer not to pay $100 if possible to have it done professionally. Any tips on how to create this matte finish myself without harming the platinum? Thanks!

Gypsy! Actually, there is zero patina on the tops of any of my platinum rings over a period of years, so I suggest you pay the $100 and have it done right if you want a matte finish.

Very fine steel wool, or even a rough sponge-back. That's what I did to my prongs because I can't stand shiny prongs.

Steel wool may be TOO abrasive...

I use a GREEN Scotch Brite pad to "add" a fine "brushed" look to my watches when they're scratched (scatched brushed finishes look polished), if that makes sense. It's been a long known trick for Omega and Rolex wearers, so you may want to try that out. It adds really nice "brushed" look OR you can use a fiberglass pen. I don't hesitate to do it on my Omegas, but that's stainless steel.

That really does look fantastic! I'll have to try this with DH's band. It's palladium - I tried steel wool a few times but he didn't like how textured the finish wound up.
