How to decide between rose or yellow gold?

Hey all,

Recently purchased a lab diamond with K faint brown color, it’s currently set in white metal as a temporary setting. Long term I plan on resetting into yellow or rose gold and here is where I’m stuck.

Trying to figure out if there is a way to get an idea of how the diamond will look before actually resetting. I can’t figure out what I can use though, for example to see how the diamond reacts to rose gold, could I use a metallic paper and wrap it around the head of my setting? Is there something that would be better because that’s the best I’ve been able to come up with? Essentially I want to make sure I get the metal color right before resetting, once and done if you will.

Then there is the question of how to best enhance the color with whatever metal I go with. Will a solitaire bring the color out enough or does it need to be in a bezel or semi-bezel to get the best effect? Would a diamond halo be better? Essentially I just want to play up that faint brown as much as I can.

Any thoughts/suggestions are appreciated! TIA!

I have all kinds of ideas for you.
Wrap a rose gold chain around the setting like a crown to get an idea.

Get a strip of regular aluminum foil and color it with one of your kid's pink markers to replicate rose gold, and wrap that around the setting.

Get an old Easter egg dye dipper,( you know the copper ones) and twist it into a 7mm circle shape to hold over the diamond to see if pinkish metal will look good.
Yes, I'm a hack and all these things came to mind just now!

I think it depends on the amount of leakage the stone has, as to how much metal color it picks up from the prongs/bezel/gallery.
I know you know that all faint brown k’s aren’t the same, and behave differently. So there’s that unknown.
I do have pictures stumbling aground here somewhere of my old GIA faint brown k pear in rose gold. Some lights it was definitely having a rosy brown tint. . Some other lightings the pear was decidedly markedly yellow against the rose gold.
I never had that stone loose for the comparison of what the setting accomplished, or not. But, if I remember correctly, the vendors photos of the loose stone exhibited the same color swing. I didn’t enjoy the rose bezel with the decidedly yellow stone times.
im currently resetting a VLPB very leaky daussi from rose gold to white. It will be interesting. I don’t seem to think the rose gold did it any favors in the previous complete rose bezel it was in for years nor the rose faux bezel it was in for a hot second.
ymmv

I had better luck/results with using a rose gold chain as suggested earlier, than coloring foil/construction paper, or some piece of candy/gum that came in a rose foil wrapper.

@stracci2000 thank you for all those suggestions, actually my Lightbox pendant has a rose gold chain so I’ll try that.

@Rfisher, I actually came across pictures of your pear in rose gold when I was researching faint browns, so pretty. Yes I agree that they can be chameleons though and that’s where I get stuck on metal color. My initial thought was rose but then I started thinking that yellow might work better with my existing bands.

Not sure how much this helps to determine leakage, these are screenshots of a video Jonathan did for me. I have no clue how to interpret these images because I don’t usually buy round brilliants and I bought more for the slight pink tint than numbers or images. All that to say that if this shows leakage that would possibly be made worse with a setting change then I might just leave it as is.

Another possibility: once you are ready to move to a new setting, have your diamond unmounted, then get a couple/few stone holders in YG and WG colors (similar to what is linked below).
You can try and coat one of them with a rose gold leafing marker or metallic paint so you can get an on-finger visual.

Another option would be to take your loose diamond to a local jeweler and float it on the prongs of both a RG and YG setting in the style that you are targeting.

@DejaWiz thank you for those suggestions. The only reason I wouldn’t go the jeweler route is because I don’t plan on working with anyone local, so I don’t want to waste anyone’s time.

I’ll either send this back to Distinctive or send it to David Klass. The holder idea may work though if I can’t find a DIY hack with it set.

I like the idea of the ring holders in different metals, or a chain. See this link for a Sako project with a photo of how he displayed the stones with different metal choices...though those were loose stones: https://www.pricescope.com/communit...c-double-drops-from-ivy-rose-and-sako.267798/
It seems like this would work better if the stone was loose. You could ask the vendor making the ring to remove the stone and then set up photos like this so you could choose your preferred metal.

@mayaINaU, thank you for linking that thread. I agree that it will be more apparent when it’s loose but I’m not ready to part with it yet!

You know after thinking about it, I might just need someone to tell me what color metal will compliment it best, if I really can’t decide on my own. This is where I feel Distinctive would give it to me straight, so I might just send it to them and say “tell me what to do with it”

These faint browns are tricky characters for sure.

I'm about 99% certain that the answer will be RG.

Seems like a no-brainer right @Mreader? It’s tricky though because like Rfisher mentioned it can be light tan or yellow or slightly pink or white just depending on the lighting. So I have to figure out what metal will compliment it most of the time. Rose gold would be nice though because I don’t have much, but I do love the color.

I tried the chain trick, top is rose and bottom is yellow. Sorry these are so close but I was trying to crop as much of the white gold as possible, also haven’t cleaned the ring yet today so excuse the dirt!

This is super unscientific but thoughts?

It seems to have more "pop" with RG to my eyes.

^yep. And seems “brighter”?

I 100 % agree with the above opinions on the rose gold. It seems to be whiter and just pop. The yellow gold seems to bring out the brown tones. I think it depends on what look you want, but I like the rose gold best.

@DejaWiz, yes I agree about the brightness, it’s interesting to me how much setting color influences the diamond.

Your skin tone is coming through on my screen as noticeably different between the two pics , so it’d be hard for me to choose off of that. (I know how hard it is to get pics tho - sometimes the camera does what the camera does. Not knocking) The stone looks pinker to my eye in the yellow gold funnily enough.

I doubt either would leave me feeling cold tho. :)

Thank you @mayaINaU @ringo865 @Rfisher and @DejaWiz for weighing in.

I remembered this morning that the pawn shop I frequent can order Stuller settings so I have a six prong setting in rose gold on the way, I’ll update once it’s set!

Awesome! Looking forward to seeing it and hearing what your impressions are when it's set!

I literally just did that - got gold, silver and rose gold stone holders off Amazon to help me pick a metal color for the setting. Worked perfectly.

As you can see from my signature photo, I LOVE rose gold so my answer may be a little bias. If your faint brown stone has a pink undertone (which I also LOVE), the rose gold would enhance this attribute. Either way, it will be beautiful and can’t wait to see what you decide.

Can't wait to see it!

Thanks @luckygreen317 and @junebug17! I ordered a six prong rose gold Stuller setting and it’s due to come in on the 20th but I probably won’t have the ring back until after Christmas. Will come back and share pictures when it’s all done :)

to m,e although the rose gold makes the stone look brighter i like the contrast of the yellow gold
but either way its going to be stunning

Thank you @Daisys and Diamonds, I feel like white metal might be washing it out so thought to try something different ;)

Got the call today that my ring was ready, so glad to have it back before Christmas! This is a Stuller setting that was on special 14k rose gold, so all in I paid $350 for the setting and to have it set. Very happy with how this turned out, there is unfortunately no sun today so these are the best pictures I can get for now.

ETA: Sorry if these pictures are huge, I’m posting from my phone.
