How to ask Permission when the future father.n.law lives in another city?

My situation is my gf''s Dad lives in another city. Do I need to fly out there to ask permission? Or...do you think it will be okay to do it over the phone... just dont want to break any etiquette standards. thanks...

Yes, I believe a good heart-to-heart, man-to-man discussion will still have an impressive effect when done over the phone. Maybe you can work into the conversation the fact that it’s not practical at the present time to make a trek to discuss the issue in person. Scheduling or financial conflicts are prudent reasons to justify not flying to another location. If it were within reasonable driving distance, then it would be another story – but it sounds like given the geographic constraints, a phone call will be just fine.
