This is my first post here and I'm very new to diamonds so I hope you can help point me in the right direction.
I think I've got the right basics set for the stone I'm after: colour, shape etc but when once I started reading about measurements on this site and I've started to get lost and possibly worry as I'll be buying unseen online.

I'm looking to purchase a princess cut stone for a single stone engagement ring and basically need some help with understanding measurements. I think i've worked out the calculations correctly based on the measurements provided on the diamondgeezer website but I'm not too sure what to make of the results.

Obviously a princess cut should be square but is the first stone still acceptable with it's longer side or at this size does it not matter?

Personally I think the second one down is the best unless having closest to 1:1 ratio and excellant polish and symmetry is going to really be the killer on a diamond this size. Absolutely any thoughts or ideas will be welcomed!

Welcome!

I have heard of the diamondgeezer but I am not sure what he is basing his calculations on.

You can use this chart as a guide, I don't know if this is the one DG has used or not, but this is a good one to use.

Also you could look for some AGS0 cut grade Princess as these are considered to be a safer bet for cut quality. Numbers are not enough to be able to judge a Princess, we really need detailed photographs at least and preferably an ASET image, otherwise all you have is a chalk outline and that doesn't tell you enough about how well a diamond is cut. However the first two look deep and we don't have table sizes to get a slight idea, I would ask the vendor for more info and photos if possible for the second two diamonds. Also polish and symmetry are not deciding factors concerning performance or cut quality of any diamond, much more important are the overall proportions, depth, table, crown height, LW ratio etc.

As you are in the UK, you could look at www.bestdiamonds.co.uk as they sell Cut by Infinity Princess which can be gorgeous diamonds.

ya, princess cut cannot be judge by numbers alone. There is a recent post about it yesterday, check that out.

Are you buying online or at a store? If online, the safest bet is to go with a AGS0 graded princess cut stone.

I would get an ASET to see what the light return is, usually numbers can only do so much with fancy cuts.

Also, I found these, they are considerabley less or the same amount than yours for their colors and carat weights:

Wow that whiteflash is a well made site, do you know of anything similar in the UK? I''m very tempted to order even though it will travel from America. I''ve been very disappointed on the level of detail on nearly all the sites I''ve seen, for such important and expensive items pretty much all lack vital information.

Many thanks for all your advice, Im definitely going to look at this AGS 0 rating now.

bestdiamonds linked above sell AGS0 cut grade Princess but if you want to order from the States, WF have an excellent rep here. I believe the charges to import a diamond ring are 17.5% VAT and 2.5 % import duty, but I am sure someone can clarify that.
