How thin should I go?

I want a round brilliant channel set diamond band and would like to go nice and thin... the question is - how thin can/should I go??

I''ve heard some jewellers say no less than 3 mm, some say no less than 2.5 mm, and some say no less than 2 mm - what''s the real deal?!

I''m putting it with an .80 asscher halo ring, similar to the one attached

you need to find out from the jeweler you''re using how thin they will make it. some may go thinner but I wouldn''t ask a jeweler to do something they didn''t feel comfortable with and most jewelers won''t anyway.

Not sure, but that ring doesn't look channel set? Or was that just for show?

If you really want to go thin, you could go about 2mm with a pave band. But I don't know if channel set would be ok that thin, I think I've only seen about 2.5mm channel set, but I am no expert on that. 2mm is generally the standard "we won't go below this" for most jewelers for pave/plain bands.

Mine is a 1.8 with pave from Ritani, but it is exceptionally strong as it is built up a bit taller to compensate.

I''ve been looking at channel set eternity bands too and Tiffany''s has 2mm versions. Very sparkly, thin, and low profile...You could check there if only to see if that thinness is really what you want.

Most won''t go less than 2mm. It depends on the ring design and the jeweler if they insist on an even wider band than that.

2mm wide is the bottom size of thin. Its not nearly as durable as 2.5mm, but it is THIN. Don''t try to go below 2mm with an eternity style.

I will be re-setting my diamond (remember it?) in the simplest platinum setting. How thin can I go? Also, can I get away with 4 prongs? Thanks!

Mine is about 2mm...maybe 2.1-ish. I don''t know about structurally (though I''ve had one stone fall out and one come loose) but visually it''s too small/thin for me, and I have small hands at a size 3.5. If I could do it over, I would get a little bigger.

Maybe it would be helpful to know that .01ct diamonds are about 1.3mm in diameter. .015ct diamonds are about 1.5mm in diameter and .02ct diamonds are about 1.9mm in diameter.

You have to have a few tenths of a mm on each side with channel setting just to hold the diamonds in place and to make the ring durable and free of readily bending. The absolutely thinnest styles today are the shared prong rings where the stones are actually the widest part of the ring. Nothing sticks out to protect the diamonds, but it allows these rings to be no wider than the stones themselves. Of course, the look is not as smooth sided as a channel set ring.
