For example if you read the book “Alive” could you eat human flesh if it was the only way you could survive?

How strong is your survival instinct?

That's a horrifying thought, but yes, if faced under dire circumstances, I do what I must do.
The only caveat is murder, I don't think I could cold-blooded murder someone else to assure my existence.

My survival instinct is very strong! It has been tested out multiple times riding my explosive Arab mare! She would suddenly rodeo buck & bronk if something came up behind us like someone on a bike or another rider. That horse taught me to think clearly under extreme curcumstances & not to freeze in fear. Yes I would eat human flesh if I had to to survive.I could only eat it in tiny little strips, not munch into someone's arm!

@moneymeister agree. I couldn’t murder an innocent person in order to survive but I think I could kill someone who was about to kill me. In self defense yes. I could kill.

@Made in London good for you! I don’t think I could eat human flesh. I can’t even eat chicken or turkey lol. But I guess when push comes to shove we might surprise ourselves.

My DH and I used to joke I wouldn’t survive an Apocalypse lol. Because I like things just so. Of course in reality, even in the absence of an apocalyptic event, one must be flexible and adapt in order to enjoy a good quality of life. Things are always changing and life is filled with turmoil.

I think I'm about medium. At some point I'd lay down and die. I tend to freeze when faced with really big stressors.

I explained earlier about riding my explosive moody mare taught me to have to think clearly at a very dangerous time.I had a friend who used to freeze in similar circumstances. She bought a new horse & got it home only to ride it out on a hack as soon as they unloaded it at home to "stretch it's legs":roll2: She had only been on it's back for ten minutes & it bolted with her.At the end of the track they were on was a 20ft deep drain. My friend froze in terror & her husband shouted to her to jump off as they were heading for the drain that ran along in front of them. She still remained frozen in fear & then the inevitable happened.Horse & rider both crashed to the bottom of the drain, the horse came down on top of her.She had terrible crush injuries, fractured pelvis, dislocated shoulder, fractured upper arm & concussion. She was in hospital for 6 weeks & went on to develop deep vein thrombosis. while in hospital. The horse was uninjured. If you freeze you allow the worst case scenario to happen

Low. You read all those stories about people surviving under crazy circumstances and I’m like nope. I’m never going to be able to cut through my arm if it’s trapped in a rock. I’m not going to eat people’s flesh (however, I did give my DH permission to eat mine, if such a circumstance were to arrive). My flight or fight is all flight!

My husband loves zombie movies / shows and I’m constantly telling him I don’t want to live in a world like that. No warm showers, no good food, no face moisturizers...no thanks!

I have joked about not wanting to be stranded with certain people on a desert island with me, as they may end up being food for me, because they irritate me so much that I would silence them etc...

In reality, I would not commit murder for my own survival. If that person dies and I am in need of food, then why not?

DK :))

If I’m alone, I’m like you. But now that I have kids, I think I would try to be tougher for them. You know, to survive so that they can. I may just freeze/panic and be attacked by whatever and die anyway.

There might be nothing left to eat by the time you wait for them to die naturally... :silenced:

You took the words right out of my mouth lol. Mostly. I can actually survive without quite a lot in normal life. But if there's a zombie apocalypse or something of that nature I would rather just die than have to live like that. Plus I would just slow everyone down. My husband and my dad both tease me about being so delicate lol. My husband on the other hand would probably survive. His parents loved to go camping and I don't mean camping at a hotel (lmao) or even a cabin. So he knows a lot more about having to live with what you can carry than me lol.

I always think I wouldn't want to survive a lot of horrifying scenarios (I have also watched a lot of zombie and disaster movies!), but in reality I suspect I would do pretty much anything to stay alive. Even if my rational brain doesn't think it's worth it.

@Made in London I absolutely freeze in fear from bolting. But I'm fine with bucking, I am very confident in my ability to sit through almost anything. Bolting, though - yikes! My current horse came to me with a poor understanding of half-halts combined with a lot of power and very big movement that makes the canter feel much faster than it really is, so that was a bit nerve-wracking for the first few months.

My Arab mare had the most beautiful floating movement & her canter was smooth. Her gallop was breathtakingly fast & her bucks massive. Her tail used to hit me over my head & her head was between her front legs. My cob mare had very bouncy movement & she used to rear more than buck when she was in season. Her bucks were enormous! She never bolted with me. I went to buy a black cob mare who bolted with me in the owners sand school.A small van drove past outside on a lane that ran along side the school & this black mare just went for it at flat out gallop.I tried to stop her but she set her jaw & neck & jumped the 5ft fence at the end of the school.I was catapulted off & into a wood pile the other side of the fence & broke multiple ribs. Bolting is my worst fear too

I could probably kill somebody in defense.
Believe me, some people need killing! LOL
But cannibalism? No way.
I'd try to find something else, insects, roots, tree bark, ...........
I have seen all the episodes of Dual Survival!

In The Road, the mother walks out into the cold to die because the thought of survival in the harsh new world is too bleak. Yeah, that would be me.

Luckily, you never know until you're there. I think most people are pretty resilient and their survival instinct is strong. I work with a lot of people toward the end of their lives.

Yes indeed the need to survive is very strong. Imma eat what I need to in order to survive. Likely there would be ptsd but yeah...will do it.

That sounds terrifying! We are currently schooling PSG and I'm not even confident in our extended canter at this point because his *real* extended canter is like flying and milliseconds can feel like days when I'm trying to bring him back.

If I were fighting for survival, even within a group of women, I think I would lose. The instinct is there, but the crazy isn’t:

As for eating human flesh if I managed to survive a fight with these women? No thanks.

I've found that in extreme situations of stress or imminent danger that I'm highly capable. When my beau and I have found ourselves in these situations I'm always the one that is calm and he's freaking out. Im able to calm him down and find a fast solution.

Actually Im pretty sure that I function better this way than in day to day normal life as far as cognitive functioning goes.

I don't know where it comes from but it's almost as if time slows down for me and I'm able to see multiple paths of survival and pick the best one.

I'm talking about bursts of highly stressful or dangerous situations, not long drawn out ones. I've never had to deal with one for a long amount of time. So I don't know how I'd react in that situation.

But yes, I do feel prepared.
I know how to shoot & can be quite athletic in these scenarios. Adrenaline helps our bodies to not feel the pain.

I'm sure I'm not the only one that strolls through the park and is highly aware of their surroundings and anyone who is there. I feel bad for the idiot who tries to kidnap me or my child.

I've even taught my child what to do in possible dangerous situations where you only have seconds.

So if me or my families survival was dependant upon cannibalism, you'd bet I'd be stoking a fire. Now if I had to kill another who was an innocent, that wouldn't happen. I would hunt instead, and if there weren't any animals I would wait for someone to pass or volunteer themselves. This is all very situation dependent though.

Seriously, though, I’m not sure what I would do in this situation. I tend to freeze in dangerous situations and unfortunately I have been in many.

I tend to joke about things that make me uncomfortable. Hence the photos posted above. Sorry if they offended anyone.

I thought it was incredibly funny! Don't feel bad! In the case of a apocalypse Walmart would be the first battleground to go!!!

Extremely low. I wouldn't want to survive an Apocalypse! Without hot showers, running water, electricity, grocery stores, and internet, I don't want to live

Hahaha I feel you and this is me most of the time. I definitely wouldn't want to live without my creature comforts. I need electricity and AC and heat and internet etc.

But there are times, when things get rough, I think no, I am not ready to call it quits. So I vacillate. But yeah I love (and need) my creature comforts.

LOL giving your DH permission to eat your flesh if necessary.

Totally agree. Some people need a good shaking if not a killing but I digress. Definitely could kill someone in self defense. As for eating, yeah no human flesh and no animal flesh but I can eat plants and if I had to maybe cooked insects. But I would rather not. :knockout:

I am always super aware of my surroundings. Being from NYC does that to a girl. I know what and who is around me and I am prepared should I need be. When we were little my parents ingrained it into us to never ever talk to strangers and if someone should approach us and try anything to scream at the top of our lungs and run away.

I know we cannot know for sure until we are in a specific situation but I am pretty confident I would die in that scenario if the only thing to eat was human flesh. But I judge no one for eating it to stay alive. I just couldn't. Anyway let's hope we are never ever in that situation.

That must be very satisfying work @LilAlex.
I agree you never know for sure until you're there.

In The Road, the mother walks out into the cold to die because the thought of survival in the harsh new world is too bleak. Yeah, that would be me.

Unless your children were still young and needed you. Then it might be a different story.
For me there is no one dependent who needs me so I think it would be easier to give up and die rather than survive in a harsh painful new world. But if I had kids I would have to fight to survive for them. IDK sorry I think perhaps this topic is too bleak. I was in a weird mood this AM.

OMG yes. I would slow everyone down. I have metal in my leg and cannot even run really. Save yourselves. Save yourselves.
My husband is very resilient. I am more as you write a bit more delicate. Like the princess and the pea. But I can be tough when I need to be. Just not for extended lengths of time as an Apocalypse would necessitate. So yeah, no thanks. :)
