How often do you get your prongs checked?

I was told to send in my 6 prong diamond solitaire engagement ring once a year and my diamond shared setting wedding band (half band, not eternity) every 6 months.

If you simply take it to a local jeweler for cleaning, they will check the prongs for you.

Once a year, during my physical, my doctor checks mine.

You can always get a little loupe and inspect it yourself.

Yeah, Kenny, a loupe will make your "prongs" look much bigger!

Who told you to send your rings in? And do you mean take them into a jeweler or send them somewhere?

Never. I clean my jewelry and on occasion look at my rings with a loupe.

Mark Morrell made my engagement ring and my wedding band is from Tiffanys. I thought MM had recommended sending the engagement ring to him for yearly inspection (on his website), but after reading it again, I see that I either misread it or confused it with another site as he simply offers inspection if you send him the ring.

In any event, both MM and Tiffanys recommend inspection every 6 months. It's no bother for me to stop by a jeweler or Tiffanys to do this. I was just wondering what everyone on PS did.

Every 6 months I get them checked by a local jeweler. Just like getting my teeth cleaned every 6 mos.

Same here! Had a six prong solitaire for 10 years. Shared prong eternity for 8. Never had them checked by a 'professional'. However, paves are easier to damage, so those might need to be checked regularly.

To the op: I think the advice here generally seems to be to get the setting checked every year or every six months with a jeweler. I check my rings myself with a loupe often and always carefully check if the stones feels loose when I clean them, but my settings arent all that complicated to check. Never (or very rarely) give them to a jeweler unless I want some work done.
So, I think the advice you got is good, but what you decide to do depends on you and how you handle your jewelry. :wavey:
Hope this helps.
