How often do new diamonds come into the market??

Hello,

I am looking for a cushion cut diamond and have notcied the same ones on everyone''s diamond lists for a few weeks now. How often do new, fancy-cut diamonds come on the market?

New diamonds enter the market every day, all around the world. Stones listed on Pricescope are only a fraction of the total available, but are certainly much more widely available than many which are traded closely among dealers and major users.

The fact that no new stones of the shape you are hunting for have been recently posted indicates to me that cushions are not the hot fashion stone of the present period. If you search for princess or round, you'd see a much more rapid listing of new stones and de-listing of sold stones.

I have written to Leonid to see if he has any data on this topic to share with Pricescope readers. One could trap a great deal of results from the listing and de-listing of diamonds on Pricescope.
It could be interesting to have a better perspective of the activity created by so much merchandise being listed and sold.

As Dave has pointed out, new diamonds enter the market every day... Diamonds that came off the cutting wheel five or six weeks ago, will just be clearing the labs that are grading them so that they can enter the open market. Most of the dealers here on PS have access to more diamonds than are listed on their web site, or will at least have an idea of what has been recently been manufactured and/or is clearing the laboratory. Contact one of the dealers who sells Cushion Cut diamonds and let them know what you are looking for so that they can start asking their respective suppliers for it. The JCK Trade Show begins next week in Vegas and most of us will be in attendance, it is a great opportunity for your chosen dealer to find the diamond for you and inspect it without having to ship a bunch of stones in a circle for you trying to find the perfect stone for you

Yes. They are hotter than rounds but in absolute numbers rounds are still about half of all diamonds.

Ok. I think I get it now. I was a little confused at first. I originally thought that the percentages you listed showed what percentage of the total # of diamonds sold in the last two weeks were each individual shape. i.e. If 100 diamonds were sold, 25 were princess, 20 were round, etc. But the percentages didn't add up to 100%.

But I think I see what your saying now, and correct me if I'm wrong. The percentages listed are the percentage of each shape that has been sold. So if, for example, there were 1000 rounds in the market, 299 have been sold in the last two weeks, but there may only be 100 princess available, and of those 100, 25 have sold in the last two weeks. So just because the percentages are similar, there are actually a lot more rounds sold by number. Thanks for the info.

For ALL I just take total number of stones and calculated how many were sold and came new (in % of total # of listings). E.g. 100,000 total listings there are 22,000 new ones - we have 22% new stones in average.

Then I repeated the same for each shape. E.g. if 12,500 rounds have been sold from total 50,000 rounds, we have 25% rounds sold in two weeks.

Very interesting stuff. I assume there are some key cycles for stones such as Christmas and Valentine's day. Any idea if the turnover stays pretty constant through these cycles? ie. number of stones inserted vis a vie number stone retain pretty constant ratios? or is the number inserted more steady and the selling periods more variable?
