How much to offer for this ring?

I am brand new to this forum, so please bear with me!

Is there a formula for determining a fair price to offer for a ring?

I''ve been looking at a 10 stone (2 rows of 5 stones) 2 ct tw, clarity vs1 & vs2. The color is G-H. It''s a Sabrina set in platinum.

It''s been in the store for at least 2 years. The owner told me he wouldn''t replace it when it sold (a marketing ploy perhaps?). It''s still there. The price tag says $8200, but they take 1/3 off right off the bat, which brings it down to 5494. I''ve asked what he could do for me if I paid cash for it, and they said $4931 for cash.

I would love to go in there with cash and say I have $4500 - will you take it?

My DH is mortified of the thought of bargaining for a diamond - especially with a small town jeweler.

What do you think?

By all means, go for it!

If they have had it in stock for that long , they should be happy to cash out of it and turn thier money into something that sells more often.

Just remember, the old honey versus the vinegar thing.

By you coming across as kind and sincere the seller is allowed to save face and feel good about selling it for less than the "best price" they already quoted.

I'd offer 3500

I think that a high price for that ring.... just my 2 cents

I agree that that is a high price for that ring. About two years ago, I bought an eternity ring,.28 stones all around, almost 4.5 carats, f and g shared prong setting. I believe they were VS 1,appraised as excellent cut in a hand made platinum mounting.It as appraised for nearly twice what I paid. I paid $4000 for the ring in the New York City diamond district where you do not get any bargains. It happened it was a size 6--my size--and eternity rings cannot be resized. You can see a picture of this ring with the solitaire I just bought from Whiteflash on Show me the Ring.
I would check it out before paying that much. I think you can do much better.
You might contact some of the Pricescope vendors and find out how much they get for stones of this size and quality. And I would certainly not feel ashamed to bargain. The dealer was not ashamed to ask over $8,000 for it and you can be sure he is not going to sell it to you at a lower price than he can get from anyone else.

Wow - $3500 - I would love to get that ring for that price!

The problem with getting loose stones is, I cannot find a 10 stone setting that I like. This is the first setting that I absolutely love, and it just happens to be a Sabrina.

There doesn't seem to be many 10 stone settings around - at least I'm not finding them!

I totally understand the vinegar/honey thing. Maybe I shouldn't have typed it that way. I wouldn't actually walk in saying that! I just don't know if I have the guts to do it period.

If you can't face in person, call them. "I wanted to ask about that 10 stone ring you've had for awhile. I know you've already discounted it once, but I have $3500 in cash right now and I was wondering if you'd be willing to sell it for that price?"

well, if you love it and you can't get it anywhere else, buy it e/t it's over-priced. I love that tag B.S. where it's marked for 8200.00...which is supposed to make us think we're getting a good deal? Well, if DH doesn't want you to haggle, ask her to pay the difference!

And yes, I think they will certainly take 4500. Doesn't hurt to ask, right? But are you prepared to walk away? You need to act like you are!

Hm. The stones are sabrina (HOF) diamonds? Well, then maybe it's not that overpriced....vendors also usually have selling price guidelines they need to stick to. I'm not big into name brand diamonds...
