How much should this custom setting cost?

I am having a local jeweler make my ring. he is getting me a price after he made the wax

Setting for:
1.5ct RB
fishtail prongs
.1ct tapered baguette on each shoulder

I heard him say it would be 6 penny weight of platinum?
and 10 hours labor

any idea what this might run me?

Thanks...good negotiating point i guess plus it has .15 on each shoulder as opposed to .1 I am doing

How much do you think they mark up the setting? I really have a budget of $1000

Don't know if I'm out of my league with platinum

Just got a voicemail from the jeweler. It was the sales guy and not the designer. after i was told my fishtail with .1ct baguettes is "no big deal" and "easy to do" (platinum) he quotes me $3750! that seems outrageous. i know it is being custom made but it is nothing at all out of the ordinary.

thoughts?

do you have to go custom, or is there a stock setting that you like?

i dont think many jewelers are carrying fishtail prongs these days with tapared baguettes?

Did you ask what the price difference would be for white gold or palladium? I think you might find most of that is platinum cost; but I feel that a $1000.00 budget for a custom setting is really tight. If you are providing all the stones (do you have all of your stones, or is some of that cost for side stones?), I would still expect a custom setting in gold to be closer to $1,300-1,500.

maybe you can get a semi-customized setting? this is what I did with my setting, took an existing design that the jeweler did and made slight changes.

ETA for example whiteflash makes this setting, it may be worth asking them if they could add fishtail prongs

Few jewelers carry these things as stock pieces but the parts are readily available to assemble these types of rings. The downside is that, in platinum, the parts are going to cost close to your budget. Since a certain skill set is required to solder and finish platinum properly, you'll need to find the right jeweler to get it done and people who do this are going to have more than minimal labor costs. I would expect to need to significantly expand your budget to do this in platinum, but it might be able to be done in gold at close to your budget.

Keep in mind that buying something ready made off the 'net is always going to be a lot less expensive than having someone hand make a similar piece. The hand made piece, or even pieces assembled from commercial parts, can incorporate more features and will often be heavier and of higher quality, so the trade off is that you pay more and can expect more. Ask your jeweler about assembling this ring from parts. The fishtail heads are available from Southeastern Findings and the shank w/baguette settings are available from Roseco...if they ask.
