Hello

First of all im new in town. I have not much experience in the gem stone world.
My dear friend gave me this 11.6 crt unheated blue sapphire as a gift (he is a jeweler from sri lanka). We have done many business in the past so I consider it a thankful gift which is probably worth something.

I didn't want to ask him what the price of it would be since I think that would be rude so im hoping to get an answer here.

Unfortunately you may not get much of an answer on worth.

I don't valuate and most people here won't either. For value of a stone you're better off having it looked at by an appraiser.

The images are hard for me to read, especially with the background, but it skews lavenderish/grayish on my screen. Does the stone have a report on it from an independent lab? If so, can you provide some info from that report?

IMO if you like and it was a gift, then put it in a nice setting (be it a ring or pendant) and enjoy. If the plan is to sell it sometime down the road, you're better off getting the stone evaluated by an independent appraiser and, also having the stone sent to an independent lab to see how much (if any) treatment is on the stone.

Hello;

Congrats on a nice gem and a gift from a friend...

First things first; send it to a reputable lab and find out what you have; then the fun begins on finding out what the true market value is for a gem with those properties.

It is a pretty gem.

i will definetly do this. i am from holland, so i think i need to find something else then those names listed.

Is this colour of the gem good to be considered a blue sapphire? i'm searching around the net and see most blue sapphire are more darkish. Does this matter?

Hi onscreen;

You may want to use Gübelin Gem Lab in your region.

Yes color in many respects is king when it comes to the value of a colored gem.

I like the color of the gem but the color may not represent what many consider the high end color of a blue sapphire. But as many will also say; beauty is in the eyes of the beholder and one person's trash is another person's treasure. Ole southern USA slangs; sorry it is in my blood :)

The size is large for a sapphire, it does show some indicators of not being heated; but only the 100x microscope will give you more evidence of that. The cutting is fine as it does not show a window or non-symmetrical lines.

IF it were mine and I was in your situation; I would send it to a good colored gem identification lab; then after you have the paperwork; I would take it to a good appraisal gemologist and therefore you can have that educated guess as to what the gem could or should bring on the open market. I tend to deal with those type appraisals opposed to the feel-good ones that do not reflect the true street value of a gem or piece of jewelry.

But hey; this is just my opinion; many may differ and that is fine; we all have opinions.

I wish you all the very best and if you do sell it; I hope you get a good value for it...

Most Respectfully;
