Just curious, but how much does quality diamond rough cost? Or an example of grade/color/size etc etc
I''ve been researching on diamonds, and the industry and have never really seen much about diamond rough other than you usually have to be big business to buy rough.
How big is rough usually after it''s been mined out?
Thanks,
Ben M.

Hi Ben
Sorting and pricing of rough diamonds is highly complex business as there are over 3000 possible grades.
Essentially a rough diamond is priced by what can be cut out of it. In other words if you can predict the end product you can calculate what you are able to pay. This can be rather tricky when you are sorting parcels of say 1000cts. While we are on the subject of predicting the end product the primary reason that well proportioned “Ideal “ cut diamonds appear to cost more is because the recovery rate is drastically reduced.
Rex the size of rough mined can vary from minute micro diamonds to 100 cts and above
Rough diamonds up to 6crts are common, availability tapers off from there.

If you like we have a rather interesting article on rough diamonds and their shapes on our web site. From the illustrations of shape you will see why its difficult to price rough.

the price of rough dimonds are depending on their quality it changes last week I saw a rough diamond 52 ctw , and after a proper cuting you could get one stone possibly pear shape 18-20 ctw and another one 8-9 carat. they were asking $3,500.00 per carat

Sam

Even if the end product was two stones of J SI2 your 52ct carat rough would be viable at $3500 p/c

Furthermore
There is a huge vibrant market for 5ct plus diamonds.
10ct rough is highly desirable fetching good premiums
