How much do inclusions really affect light reflection?

Hi

I''ve really learnt a lot from reading these forums, so thank you to everybody for your help.

I do have a question though if anybody can share their expertise..

I am currently looking at a RB Stone for my E-Ring, it is 1.05, E, SI1 and eyeclean. It rates under a two on the HCA and has an excellent cut according to its GIA Certificate. I have looked at it through an Idealscope and am generally pretty happy with it.

I do not have much experience looking at stones though and think they all look pretty good.

While this one looked great (I saw it under natural light and it seemed to sparkle as much as the others), it has one inclusion on a pavillion facet just above the cutlet that reflects to all the other pavillion facets making it seem that there are many inclusions.

Even knowing it was there, I could not see it with the naked eye. So the fact that its there doesn''t trouble me.

But could it be interfering with light refraction? It seemed slightly cheaper than the other stones I was looking at (although there are so many variables it really is hard to compare).

Its such a big thing to commit to, and I would hate to always be wondering whether I should have held off and found a better one...

99.9% of the time not enough for you to see it in an SI1/2 clarity - UNLESS, possibly, where the clarity grade is determined by an all pervasive cloud.

The question becomes more important for I1, I2 or I3 grades.

Just look at it 10X, if it looks like a snow fall, inclusion city, I would guess it would effect a lot of things. I looked at a diamond last week that had so many inclusions I was surprised the dealer even showed it under the scope.

I did check it out with 10X Loupe and Idealscope. Luckily there are no Snowfalls or clouds. Just one spot that reflected to all facets.

In all other areas, it seems a great stone. White with big broad flashes of sparkle.

Just had the niggling thought that I might get stuck with a dud....

Look at it as the roadmap for your stone, you can take one look after a cleaning and know it''s yours. As long as it''s eye clean and you don''t have an issue with it. I''d prefer it to be off to the side, but I think that''s more psychological.

Some inclusions do reflect, I would say if you have doubts now and haven''t yet purchased the diamond, hold out and look for another which is '' mind clean'' for you.

I would look for something that doesn''t have that kind of inclusion. I think once you know something is there you will see it especially under intense lighting conditions like sunlight.

But Lorelei (squeal) you hit the nail on the head. I couldn''t put my feelings into words...but ''mind clean'' is exactly it!!

I haven''t bought the stone yet and will hold out until I find one I am completely happy with.

I love that term ... "mind clean". You have to be happy with it, and don''t settle for a snow fall of inclusions if you mind want a clean house.

I saw an E VS2 0.5 very good cut stone full of minute inclusions. it was EGL certified, and eye clean but lots of small red dots on the paper almost making it pink. and next to my J VS1 0.5 good cut, it definitely looked whiter but it had NO greater sparkle.
