How many millimeters bigger would you have to go to really notice a difference?

I''m curious about this.
To really see a difference visually, set in a ring how much bigger would you have to go in millimeters in a stone from whatever you have in your ring already to notice and also for others to notice given they have seen the ring you have now?

I hope this makes sense and I''m sorry if it doesn''t...
Example I have a 2ct stone that is 8.22x8.24 so if I got a stone that was say 2.50 that was 8.60x8.65 or something along those lines would I be able to really notice it once it was set in a ring?

Your example is a 25% increase in weight and about a 10% increase in face up area...won''t be noted by a casual observer, but you may note it after it''s set. Side by side loose stones would be obviously different in size to anyone.

When you get to 50-100% differences in weight, then the more casual observers may or may not notice, depending on how familiar/observant they are with the situation...of course, you will REALLY notice the difference in price!

I'm not sure about size, but if it's an upgrade case then I would think a shape-change would garner more attention than a 1mm size difference.

ETA: As for your original question, wouldn't it depend on the size of the stone, in the first place?

DiamondExpert thanks for your answer and yes I would definitely notice the price diff if I was trying for a 50-100% size increase! Actually sometimes even a 25% increase in size can take a bite out of the wallet LOL!

onvacation thanks for your response too and yes it would depend on each individual stone. I think I was just wondering if there was in fact some set rule so to speak for how much bigger one would need to go in order to notice a significant size diff depending on the size of the stone one had of course.
I''m not really thinking upgrade I''m just curious I guess...well with DSS I guess upgrade is on my mind now and then

It definitely depends on the size of the original stone. If you go from a .30, a .50 would be very noticeable. Around 1 carat is where you begin to need more weight to see a difference. At two carats and up it would take quite a bit. I think you''d see a difference at 2.5, but I don''t think it would make you rave about how much bigger it is.

This is assuming the stones are well cut, and on your finger, not side by side.

I went from a 2ct around your size to a 2.52 8.80x8.83 and there is a visual difference. It''s just not a huge one. The price jump though

I can''t say whether you would notice a difference. I probably wouldn''t.

I''m pretty bad at estimating size/volume by sight. Anything under a full millimeter tends to escape me unless the stones are loose and right next to each other. If they''re set on someone else''s fingers, I can''t even do that (partly because I don''t like to stare at people, no matter how gorgeous their jewelry). I can tell a 1 ct. RB from a 2 ct. RB, but the difference really has to be about that huge for me to tell at a glance.

Liane I don''t think that I would notice either at a glance of someone''s finger and I try not to stare also in case people think I''m a bit looney but then having been on PS for a while sometimes I can''t help myself

That said, a friend of mine was considering two top-make stones; one was 2.43 ct. and the other was 2.28 ct. There was a discernable difference when viewed side by side, but that difference would dissolve once either one was set into a ring and worn. Then, they would give materially the same look.
