How long to find a diamond and make the setting?

Thanks for all your help with the setting information...we tried both styles we were interested in on again (tapered baguette vs. solitaire) and we've now decided to stick with the RB solitaire.

I was just wondering how long it takes to find a diamond? In terms of, once we put in our request with whichever company, how long do they generally take before they find a suitable diamond?

Also, with hand forged settings how long do they generally take to make? We're thinking Leon Mege at the moment for a 6 prong claw setting, probably the tulip.

Thanks again!

I would imagine if youre just trying to find a RB it wouldnt be that long at all, unless youre looking for a 5ct or something, but I mean go look at WF or JA and see how many fit within your criteria. Thats probably a good indication of how long it will take to find what youre looking for

Assuming that you're in the USA, and the diamond you choose is in-house, all it takes to get it ti you is you pay for it, and they UPS or FedEx it. If you get a stock solitaire from a domestic maker like Stuller, or choose one that your vendor has in stock, a week to 2 weeks should do it. But Christmas is always a huge workload for jewelers, so start now.

Leon and similar designers: Maybe 4-6 weeks, or maybe longer at this time of year? They do what they want to, when they want to, hehe.

It depends on what you want. It can take be as short as a day or as long as a few weeks (longer for fancies).

As for handforged. I would look up Leon's solitaire's. Harriet has problems with her stone being lose, and I believe a few other people had the issue as well. You can try Steven or Victor or ERD as they all do handforged.

As for leadtime on handforged settings. It really depends on the vendor's schedule, and they would be the best to ask about that.

Incidentally, there is nothing inherently better about handforged for a plain solitaire. So if you like a CAD and CAST like Mark Morrell, then feel free to go for that setting.

If I were aiming to have a completed diamond ring for Christmas, I'd have the stone mounted in a stock mounting and I would get the custom one done when the vendor can comfortably get it done. If you try to rush a custom job, you might wind up very disappointed. I would not want to complicate the making of my custom ring by trying to get it by Christmas.

If you're trying to rush it for Christmas, don't do hand forged. I waited 12 weeks. I know not all vendors take that long, but with the holidays, they might…

If you're just getting a solitaire, why not get a CAD/CAST one, or even a stock setting?

I agree with TC1987,

It depends on your location, the diamond's location and when you make the payment.

The toughest part is selecting the diamond and the setting, if you have both available, then its not that hard.

Most online vendors in the US would take anywhere between a week to 10 days to deliver the finish product after they get the money.

But since its gonna be season time, I recommend you make your move faster to get the ring quicker.

Goodluck :loopy:

I'm not looking to have the ring made by Christmas. Just asking so I know how long I'll generally have to wait once I get the process started (weeks or months kind of thing) We're in Australia too by the way.

Gypsy: We're just looking for a RB... 1.5 G/SI1 eyeclean. I assume this wouldn't be too hard to find, so once we're ready I'll just send that request on.

Thanks for letting me know about the possible problems with loose stones, I'll definitely have a look elsewhere too.

I'm not sure how I feel about stock vs. cad vs. hand forged. I always just assumed the hand forged would be the best. We do both like the 6 prong claw settings and don't like the prongs looking too blobby (for lack of a better word) Are these claw prongs safe though?

I'll have to have a search through the websites to see if there are any stock settings I like. Otherwise maybe cad. I don't know (and would definitely know less without you all!) Any votes for one over the other?

I've had a bit of a search through the different websites and on here and it seems as though quite a few people are happy with the Vatche U113 setting. I quite like it too so I think this might be the way to go.

Seems as though the general consensus is 90 platinum/10 iridium mix with medium height diamond. And either IDJ or GOG. Does this sound right? Also, for completeness...will it be easy to find a wedding band considering it doesn't look like the band will sit flush? We quite like similar to a micro pave band

Sorry for all the questions....again!

Yup - should be pretty easy to find.

I also wouldn't worry too much about the quality of Leon's work. It is hard to gauge if there are real quality issues without proof - I haven't seen solid proof other than one person saying it and other rumours that surround the story. I have a Leon ring myself and it is very well made that I find it hard to believe. Anyways, can't go wrong with Steven Kirsch or Victor Canera too.

I am one who has the Vatche setting and I truly love it! It goes great with almost any diamond wedding band! And there is only a tiny gap. I wouldn't want it to sit any closer. I mainly wear the Tiffany Legacy 2mm band with mine. I think that setting is an excellent choice and I recommend Good Old Gold for the diamond and setting. I think they told me two weeks for the setting but it was ready before that. How much is your diamond budget?

(Oh, and I previously had the Leon solitaire and changed to the Vatche.)

Diamondseeker your rings are beautiful and are exactly the type of combination I was looking for. Our diamond budget at the moment is around 13k. Do you think I would be able to get a nice G SI1 (Eyeclean) 1.5carat RB for that with GOG?

You would have to talk to them about your budget and what they see that is available to call in. The closest thing they have in stock at the moment is an H SI1 (note the funny mistake about the clarity!).

You might tell them to look for a stone with fluorescence. I have a 1.58 G VS1 that was much less than a stone without fluorescence, and I really felt it was a bonus!

I definitely want a diamond that is visible to the naked eye! Haha!

Hi Samson01

I found these diamond while I was going through B2C Jewels that matches your requirements mentioned in your earlier post.

Have a look at them.

On paper all are good but check with them if they can provide you gemologists feedback and images etc...

Goodluck ;)
