I've got about a month and half before I've got the money to actually buy something. So, would it be best for me to wait until I actually have the money in hand to get something? Or, should I be searching for something now? I've already done my research so I know exactly what I'm looking for. My price is just under 4k including the white gold typhany setting. I'm looking for an excellant cut, close to 1carat as i can get, H-I color, and eye clean SI1-2.

So basicaly, when should I start seriously looking for something?

I think it can't hurt to start looking! Are you looking for a round stone? How about something like this? Or if you would consider a J colored stone, how about this beauty?

yeah, she wants the round. I have been looking, I''m really excited about getting this for her/us. But, I don''t want to find something and get my hopes all up and it be gone by the time I''m ready to buy. She wants BIGGEST/NICEST I can afford. lucky me...I figured thats probably going to be around .8 carats. I don''t really want to go under the color-I becuase i''m afraid of it might look a bit too warm. So, I guess I''m just trying to figure out how long the pricescope listings hang around before they get bought up...

-Travis

I''m thinking you can get a little bigger than .8

Here''s one from GOG: Link

It takes 5 minutes to 1/2 hour max. Great to dabble now to get an idea of what you are looking at when ready...

Shopping for the perfect stone can take months, weeks, days or minutes, depending on what is available at the time you are looking and how flexible you are with your specs. Now certainly is the time to start looking and learning so that when you find the perfect stone you''ll be ready to pounce on it.

The best thing to do is too start looking at the PS vendors who list prices and photos so you can familiarize yourself with the lingo.

Marty's talking about if you are a sane, rational person.

If you're obsessive compulsive anal retentive, it could take you years. I've seen some Pricescopers turn into skeletons with cobwebs all around them.

God forbid that for you though. You'll probably get it taken care of in a week or two.

$4k for a budget? $14k for a budget? It takes the same amount of time for both people: Too long.

If only diamonds were like tv''s or computers. We could go to cnet for a review, price shop a few sites for the same model with exact specs then make a purchase.

Nope, here I need to way cut vs color vs size vs clarity vs angles vs sparkle.

Amen to that. I''ve been looking 2 months now for the perfect cushion, and it''s driving me nuts. If only my GF wanted a RB, I''d be done by now.

Marty,

I trust that you are talking about making sure that a customer leaves with a diamond.

The question of Travis, however, is how long it takes for him to find the perfect stone, worthy for him to spend his savings on, and which he and probably his significant other can enjoy the rest of their life. If he can do that, with ease of mind, in five minutes, even half an hour like you suggest, he is on a road to disaster.

Live long,

Amen to that - I wouldn''t want to spend 4k in 5 mins

The real question is: how much time between buying and proposing? You seem to be planning things carefully, so I expect you are leaving yourself some time between the two. Also, you are not looking for a particularly hard-to-find (or assess) stone. I would allow 2-3 weeks; possibly a few days more if you want an indipendent appraiser to look at the stone before it''s set.

At any rate, since many vendors will accept deposits/layaway to hold stones, I would start browsing now, without pressure on yourself to make a decision. If you find the right stone, fine; if not, keep looking. Most importantly, use this time to get an idea for who you would like to supply your ring, in terms of service, personal style etc.

If you find something you really like right now, you can usually negotiate a lay-a-way option with the vendor. Be prepared to pay some where around 25% up front. Thats what I did. I found a diamond I absolutely loved.. rights size, right color, right clarity, eye clean and an amazing price. I had seen how similar sized diamonds (0.83ct range) usually sell almost immediately after they''re posted online (3 where posted this week on WF and were sold before all the info was loaded on the website lol) and I didnt want to lose out on this deal. Wink at Winfield''s was very understanding and allowed me to purchase the diamond on lay-a-way till October. 50% of the ring had to be paid off before he would have it set. So thats an option out there you might not have thought about.

Good luck!

haha well yeah, I''m not really the type that would spend 4k after only looking for a half an hour. But, I''m planning on getting something from Good old Gold. They''ve just got to much information on all their diamonds. It really gives me a piece of mind. Plus, all they''re diamonds seem to be amazing. I''ve been looking on and off for the past couple of months and GOG seems to be the best bang for my buck.

I''m planning on getting something the beggining of October and then proposing either late October or early november. (I still have to ask the parents) So, I can put a request in at GOG in a week or two to see if they can find something for me.

Exactly, I''m one of those with cobwebs so thick I''m going blind. In my case, PS is both a blessing and a curse!!

I''m also someone who takes a long time to make a decision, and likes to consider all the angles. PS enables me to rot away with cobwebs all over me w/o making any decisions.

I keep getting sidetracked by new questions, new ideas. There''s so much to learn. Don''t be like us!

Kidding aside there is such a thing as analysis paralysis where you read too much information which doesnt allow you to make a timely decision. Use the info on here as guides so you arent getting ripped off by an unscrupulous vendor.

Yes, I second what Stone_seeker said. Be rational, but let your eye and your heart move you.

I''m turning into a cobweb...it''s taking forever for me to find the right diamond...

I''ve turned into a diamond encyclopedia. Sometimes my girlfriend drags me into helzburgs and kays in the mall and I rip the salespeople a new one when I ask them questions about the cut. The want to talk about polish/symmetry...I want to talk crown and pavilion angles. But, my major hang up is getting the money all together. I''ve been looking/researching for the past few months and I''ve found a few that I would have loved to pounce on if i had the money.

But, I just thought of something... Is there a better time of year to buy diamonds in terms of price here on pricescope? I didn''t know if any of you long time pricescope shoppers noticed any trends...

-Travis

Travis, there isn''t a ''better'' time of year-pricewise, I''m afraid. The price of diamonds has been steadily increasing over the last 2-3 years, and that''s expected to continue.

The busiest time of year tends to be Thanksgiving through Valentine''s Day, and inventory moves quite quickly during these times.

I hear you man, you sound like a spitting image of me 10 months ago. Hang in there, it''s worth it in the end.

It took me about 5 months of browsing, looking to find the one I wanted. When you find it, you know! I''m about to buy mine and and am tre excited about it.
