A few days short of 6 months. I wanted it over my summer break (another teacher) and we are doing an outdoor reception in Ft Lauderdale, Forida so it had be be June (slightly cooler) and not July or August (hot an humid).

I am happy with the short engagement. I think I would be dying if the wedding was 8 months away rather than 2 months.

I have to say that ten months is LONG ENOUGH. I can''t imagine what you''d need two years for, the actual booking of vendors and decision-making doesn''t take much time, it''s deciding what you want.

You can do as much planning in 6 months as you can in a year, you just have to be more efficient about it.
Sure, provided that area vendors wouldn''t be already booked up 6 months in advance. The long engagement, at least for us, wasn''t about having extra time for the actual planning, it was just to account for the lead time necessary to book vendors.

I had trouble finding a good photographer even 12 months out--about 80% of those I contacted at that time were already booked. Same with officiants. I also thought 6 months ahead was a good time to start looking at bakers--apparently I''m also ''behind'' on that. In addition, most of the vendors I''ve met with have asked how long our engagement will be, and when I say a year and a half they always say ''A short one!'' I think a long engagement is something of a necessity around here.

I think a destination or small-town wedding can be easily planned in less than 6 months, but in a metro area you''re facing slim pickings with anything under a year.
Exactly my point. If we hadn''t booked our reception venue 17 months in advance, we would have missed out. And I''m not in a metro area... It''s just very popular because it simple, gorgeous and inexpensive. People for Ontario and the US drive all the way to get married there!

Yeah it''s the same over here. We went to see our venue in October 07 for a Summer 09 wedding and the earliest date we could get a Saturday was 2011

We couldn''t get a friday till 2010 so we got the last Thursday of Summer 09 that was free and that was only as someone had cancelled. I think that it really depends on where you live or where your venue is.

5 months and 5 days. I am such a huge fan of the short engagement, we just wanted to start our married life together. My BFF had a 10 month engagement and when she was at the halfway mark we were both like OMG are we there yet.

Oh and I got married on a Friday so vendors were not an issue, plus DH and I still had the weekend to relax before leaving for our honeymoon.

Proposed 12-7-07 and wedding is 7-25-08.

8 months and man, is it racing by!!!

About 2 1/2 months (engaged Dec 23 married Mar 10).

It was a crazy couple of months but it was so great to have it all over with. To be honest I would have done everything exactly the same if I''d had 2 1/2 years rather than months to plan it. My wedding was beautiful but I was never that excited about it (I knew I''d be an emotional wreck in front of 100+ people... and I was... total breakdown). I was always excited about being married but not the wedding.... I''m so glad we had a short engagment. The worst part (which I can sort of understand) is that I know people (even my MIL) thought I might be pregnant (we''ve been married nearly 1 year and 2 months with no baby so I guess they''ve figured out the truth).

It all happened so fast... we''d been dating 1 year 7 months when we got engaged and had been talking about marriage and unofficially discussing our wedding for months. My husband had been planning to propose on New Years Eve (it''s a special day for us... it would have been a year since the first time we said "I love you") but moved things up because I was going to go dress shopping that day and he didn''t think I should have to go dress shopping without my ring (which he''d had for a couple of months safely stored away in MY apartment). He now admits he wishes he''d just proposed when he bought the ring so I could have had more time to plan... he hated seeing how stressed out I was but now that it''s all well behind us I think everything was perfect.

I put 2 years or more. We had to finish up grad school first :)

We got engaged July 18, 2007 and we''re getting married August 23, 2008 (exactly 4 months from today yay!) I''m really enjoying the longer engagement, I''ve been able to put the wedding planning down during busy months (I travel for work a lot) and when I''m experiencing planning burnout. I''m actually done everything except for the details that you can''t do until you''re past the 3 month mark (week before mark too ;) so I''m able to enjoy some quiet time and hang with friends and not stress at all. It''s nice. My fiance thinks it''s nice too hahah!

I put down 1-1.5years, but really we're almost a year on the dot. Engaged 9/6/07, getting married 9/13/08. I knew the engagement was coming, though, so I had been doing some pre-planning prior beforehand. When he proposed, I already had a list of venues for us to check out. However, none of the "real" planning - actually visiting venues/vendors, picking a date, etc - was done early. Things DO book early, though. By October/November, 9/13 was the ONLY fall date available at both of our venues, and we couldn't get our first choice for some of our other vendors (like photographer).

FI proposed in October 07 and wedding is October 08, so pretty much a year...

Like NEL said, I would have done it MONTHS ago if the dress wasn''t taking FOREVER to come in.. :)

The wait is so hard....

We were engaged on 2/2/06 (about 2 weeks after our 5 year anniversary) and will be married on 8/22/08. 2.5 years from engagement to wedding date. I wanted to finish law school before we got married.

Ours will actually be 1.75 yrs. I wanted 1 yr, but FI will be in the middle of classes and too stressful for him. I didn''t want to do summer because our wedding will be in FL and it''ll be hot and gross. So that left fall. I guess that''s fine, it gives me more time to plan, which I''ve been shockingly lax at doing. Luckily my mom''s here to kick my butt in gear...

Hi. I voted 6-12 months. From proposal to wedding date, I''ll have had 11 months to plan.

we got engaged on July 25, 2007 and are getting married (in 10 days) on May 3, 2008.

We got engaged on August 19, 2007 and we''re getting married on August 2, 2008. So, we were engaged just under a year. I''ve felt like I''ve had a lot of time, but it''s been difficult lately because I''m in my last semester of college. I had wanted to get married earlier in the summer, but because several of my friends are getting married earlier in the summer and some of our closest friends are going to be gone all summer, we chose August.

I didn''t have any trouble finding vendors, though I am getting married in a small town. Two of my friends who got married in a large city opted to get married on a Sunday so they could have more choices, which seemed to work out great!

Engaged Christmas Eve 2006 - Wedding July 26th 2008.

I have loved having a long engagement. I have too many other committments to have managed to organise the wedding in a shorter amount of time!

Blair, DH proposed July 2006, married March 2008, and like you having high standards in excellent organizational skills, i had the wedding planning done a month before the wedding...i saved little details for the week before (placecards, crystals on the centerpieces)...once i got help from my out of town BM....had to make good use of her!!!

about 14 months. Engaged Dec 24, 2007, wedding March 14, 2009.

It's actually going to be a year and 4 months, so I voted 1-1.5

It seemed like a long time at first, but wow, has it flown! There's only a little more than 4 months left now!!! But I have to say, I've been enjoying the engagement period, because we'll only have it once.

Wow I guess I may be the longest, three years (from when we got engaged). Just got engaged last month, but we are planning for March 13, 2011. It is our anniversary, and we are both students he is going to grad school and I will be for my teaching degree. So we want to be finished. Although I am trying to move it up to perhaps the summer before in case I get a teaching job, but we both want to save for a great honeymoon and be able to buy a house. Gives me a lot of time to plan for it. And for my stepdad to rebuild the back deck of his house for our rehearsal dinner, my mom is loving me for giving him a reason to do that!

1.5 yrs. we got engaged in Feb 08 (I don''t remember the exact date; he does because I proposed to him). we actually had a few things to consider. first of all, we live in Holland but neither of us were born here so we have to get our birth certificates from country of origin, get them certified and then mine has to be translated. this can take several months. we will sign the papers in Holland but our ceremony and reception will be in South Africa, so I have to plan everything from a far. we also have to give everyone enough money to save up to fly there. as our honeymoon will be in Mauritius and they have monsoon season from January to April, we couldn''t plan it then. May until August is too cold in SA. so we have decided on Sep 09. I am going to send an e-mail soon about what dates are available at the venue... keep your fingers crossed for me!

I was engaged for 11 months

I''m a dunce and forgot I started this thread-Thanks for all your replies!!! Like I said earlier, I will probably have exactly a year. But I am VERY organized and a teacher, so I will have summer and breaks to do a lot. I will probably go out and get a venue and church (still not decided if I want to get married in a church, but that''s a whole other story) right away. I''m trying not to get my heart set on any places, photographers, etc. yet because I don''t want to be disappointed if we can''t get anything, so I will just be a planning machine when it''s time!
