Although I would love to upgrade it is definitly not happening now! Husband and I are coming up on our 1 year anniversay at the end of this month. I''m hoping by our 5 year anniversary I can upgrade and hopefully find my forever diamond and setting for my ring

This is my attempt at creating a poll to see what everyone else''s timelines were

I picked the first year...but I never had an actual engagement ring in the first place so not sure it is an upgrade! It's more like...my first engagement ring after I am already married?

We had a spontaneous engagement (though certainly had talked about marriage!), followed by a very short engagement period (ten weeks) and had the wedding to plan and pay for ourselves and such so I opted not to get one at the time for those and other reasons. I definitely did not want to feel rushed into finding one as I had NO idea what I wanted in a ring. I was not even sure I wanted one at the time!?

Shortly after the wedding, when I had some more time to research what I wanted and knew a tax refund was coming....I started looking for an "engagement" ring and a new matching band (so I guess maybe it is an "upgrade" of my original wedding band/ring???).

I do not foresee ever changing it again unless something unforeseen happens to the ring or the stone. I did plan this as my forever setting after a LOT of deliberation so I definitely do not see changing the setting. While I am not entirely OPPOSED to changing stone in future for a different colored sapphire as an anniversary gift or something if my DH wanted to do so, I am not leaning towards actually changing it at all at this point and I definitely do not see changing it for something larger (I prefer smaller stones) or a diamond or anything (my DH offered that we could get a diamond when we are in Dubai in the next couple years, but I don't think I will actually go that route - and I told him maybe we could upgrade HIS ring instead!).

As much as I love admiring peoples rings and their upgrades, I realize I am really not the "upgrading" kind. However, I also don't wear really much jewelery aside from my wedding ring and my boring white gold stud earrings that I only take out to clean!

I did not get engaged with a daimond, and so for our first anniversary we bought a .80ct J VS2. For our second anniversary we upgraded to a 1.17ct K SI1, and then six months later to a 1.20ct G SI2. Although the size was good on those leaps, the color and clarity did not float my boat. For our third anniversary we will be doing another upgrade to a diamond and ring that will be it for a good long while I am hoping

. All along I knew I was aiming for about a 1.6-1.7ct diamond.

I like a big bling look, what can I say.

Well... no upgrade yet, but we have been married 1.5 yrs and are looking. Definately upgrading setting, maybe stone too. I''ve been waiting two weeks for stones to come in to look at, so we''ll see.

I got my first upgrade for 30 anniversary. Wahoooo! My beautiful OEC.....

I think you don''t need to wait so long but for me, it was fantastic!

At five years was my first upgrade from .40ct princess to a 1.01J round, then a month later to switch out my diamond for a tad bigger 1.21ct K round. I don't plan on upgrading again ever ... but we shall see come our ten year

What prompted your upgrade D&T? I don''t think I have ever heard you tell it. Did you always want a bigger diamond or was it a whim of sorts?

DD- that's how I found out about PS. I wanted to make a more informed decision about the big diamond purchase (instead of rushing into a ring the first time around). When I received the J, I thought..."Oh so this is what a well cut diamond is suppose to look like...lol , I can totally go slightly lower in color and get a slightly larger diamond too!" We also wanted a milestone anniversary to mark the occasion- so the Five year was it, plus financially we were more stable - then you know the rest spiralling out of control to find the perfect setting. Thanks for asking DD

I was not engaged with a diamond ring. Even over a decade later we still haven''t bought me my dream ring. I have a few diamonds, but all were inexpensive estate sale items. I''ve had a few gemstone rings I have worn as well.

I do have a dream ring and maybe for our 15th anniversary of our wedding we''ll go for it and actually buy a new new ring for me

I'm in the process of upgrading after almost 11 years of marriage. I feel a bit ungrateful, but the ring that my husband proposed to me with really wasn't what I would have chosen. This time (after wearing that ring for over 11 years) I get to pick!

I am currently buying my upgrade ering now. (See my thread "Helpity Help Help) for the latest news!
36.gif
But I''ve chosen a Cushion 1.01 E VS2 in a Leon Mege setting.)

I''m getting this for my 12.5 annversary. Weird, huh? But in Holland (Dutch husband) the first big anniversary is 12.5 (Half of 25... don''t ask)

I upgraded my setting for our 5th anniversary, then just recently upgraded my stone and crown and we will be married for 13 years this June. I still want to add a couple of pink diamond and rose gold bands to make my ring "complete". I am the type of person that I cannot say this is a FOREVER ring. I am pretty sure it is MY forever stone (I mean it is a 2carat radiant, and I don''t think bigger would work in my very small hands).

Besides I LOVE MY BLING!!!

My upgrade was *before* I got married. Had the ring for about a week and then realized how ugly it was and how much I hated it. Since DH was with me when I picked it out, it wasn''t a situation where anyone''s feelings would get hurt. With the first ring, DH just sat there and then when I picked out the upgrade, he again just sat there. He could tell the difference in quality between the stones but I have a feeling he was mostly spacing out while I was "ooooh, aaaahing" the new stone I had found.

I don''t plan to upgrade my stone. It''s not at all on my priority list.

I voted "Never" because my husband frowns upon upgrades (whats wrong with him

)? I DO have DSS though!

Really great stories everyone, thanks for sharing all of yours!

When I was married my husband had picked out my e-ring. It was a .39 ct G VVS2 with channel set diamonds. We had side bands made for each side of the ring as I like chunky rings. I wore this set for 8 years then decided to upgrade the setting as the side bands were not made very well. At the same time, I upgraded to a 1.0 ct G stone. Sad to admit that within a year of the upgrade I have since upgraded twice - first to a 1.5 F I1 stone that I couldn''t stand the inclusions in
14.gif
and then to my current 2.01 ct L SI1 (absolutely perfectly eye-clean) which I absolutely love. I also purchased a 1.5 M SI1 emerald cut in a halo setting for my RHR during the same time. It did not take me long to realize that I''m drawn to and love the warmer coloured diamonds against my skin tone.

I have kept my original diamond from my husband and have it set in a lovely pendant (close to my heart)

During our engagement. My dh picked out a lovely ring but it wasn''t the one I wanted to wear always and forever. We have an amazing relationship with open communication so I shared how I felt with him and we changed the diamond and setting a few months after we became engaged.

Um .. what about not even waiting until marriage? Diamond 1 was purchased and set but the setting didn''t turn out right - I asked the fiance not to propose until the setting is fixed. Then I decided we might as well also look for a new diamond ...

It ended up being an upgrade although I was just looking for something different and not necessarily bigger or better.

Interesting poll!
I''m yet to propose, but am hoping I make the best decision up front so we won''t even consider an upgrade in the future..

I''m looking at a 2ct F/VS1-2 Princess FYI ..
I wonder if I would consider upgrading a few years down the track, should the bank allow - or if I''d put the money into some other form of jewellery, or a holiday, etc..

I haven''t ''upgraded'' but last year I changed the setting for our 20th anni. It was in a yg solitaire, and now it''s in a wg spilt shank solitaire. My husband was given the stone (from his grandmother, but not her ering) years before, so their is no upgrade policy in existance for me. I''ve considered reseting my mom''s stone, which is now in a bezel pendant that I rarely wear, into a ring again. It''s 1.05 ct in comparison to my .67. So, maybe I''ll do that for another anni.

Upgrade what, the husband?

So ae you engaged now Charmy?

I upgraded for our five year anniversary (but had been wearing the ring for almost seven years). I started out with a 1 ct. princess that I would have never picked for myself and now have a 1.7 rb.

Yes I am. He got fed up waiting after a year .. he made me an e-ring out of cardboard (with a massive 20+ ct diamond on it) and proposed with it. I couldn't have been happier :)

LOL, nope he''s a keeper

My first set was Moissanite and then "high end" CZ. I was quite happy with the Asha, but knew I really wanted the real deal. So after 5.5 years of marriage I got my 2.11 tcw three stone that has now been turned into a five stone--3.15 tcw.

Watch out for HSS.

Haha, Kenny HSS!!!! You coined a new one with this, LOL!!!!

I waited 15 years. It was a huge surprise and am just as thrilled with it today as I was back then. My husband was so cute in doing that, he really got as much of a kick out of it as I did.
