Ok so I''ve done TONS of research, I know exactly what I want and now I''m just out looking for the best deal. The jewelry store has quoted me about 27k for the stone I want (2.5ct, F, SI2, Excellent cut round brilliant). Online, it looks like I can get the same thing for around 25k. Do you think the price could get even lower if I visit the diamond district in NYC?

Just a thought... are you sure SI2 for such a big stone?

The diamond district is *not* a place to find deals, it is a place to be bullied and hasseled generally speaking

At least that is what I have seen from hearing peole''s experiences.

That said, there are some great PS vendors located there, but it is not for the faint of heart. I would stick with those PS vendors if you want to go there.

One word answer.........none

No.

BTW, I'd consider raising the clarity even if you have to lower the color.
It's going to be hard to find an eye-clean SI2 in a large 2.5 ct stone.

I have to agree, try finding a VS2 clarity diamond if possible. I wouldn''t go lower than F color but if forced to decide, I''d lower the color and increase the clarity a notch.

Regarding finding a deal in the diamond district vs online, why not get the best of both worlds and find an online jeweler located in the diamond district?

Although I would say 25k sounds like a reasonable price. Being that something like 90% of the diamonds in the United States go through the NY Diamond District, you''ll probably find some of the best deals here if you know where to look. Of course this place is also infamous for their fair share of shady jewelers giving a bad rep to the area however. When you go there, just be armed with information, know how to negotiate and if you feel pressured by a salesperson just keep walking.
