8.8% in farmtown, Illinois
8.8%???

Ours is 1%

Property Tax Rates

Year 2005 Total Property Tax Rates Total Sales Tax Rate 6.25%

City 1.9148% For Two Previous Years Utility Tax On

County 1.1164% 2004 2003 Electricity 0.00%

School 4.1681% 8.9918% 8.5726% Natural Gas 0.02%

Other(s) 2.0064% Telephone 0.00%

Total 9.2059% Water 0.00%

Wait--so, for my $350,000 home I would have to pay $30,800 per year in taxes? That''s insane. How do people afford to live there, and WHY would anyone buy a house somewhere with such high taxes?

Am I missing something here????
No, I don''t think you''re missing anything. I''m not quite sure about those numbers either. lol

My zip in Philly Pa: around $1300/yr. Rowhomes typically worth between 100000-140000. Sucky school system - and no backyards

One of the "senior" cardiologists I work with was complaining that the taxes for his NJ home was 20K... no idea what his house is worth, or what town (although I think he told me, I just forgot). But I''m sure it''s a pretty penny.

Got this from a website about Philly property taxes: Current real estate rates are 4.790% for the School district and 3.474% for the City; a total of 8.264%.

Thanks, Starset!

I''m in Illinois, too. I think I don''t understand what this figure means, because it says we pay 7.2260% for property tax (or did 10 years ago), but our yearly taxes on our 350K home are only $7,000, which is 2% not 7.2%.

According to that website, this is what we pay:

Property Tax Rates
Year 1998 Total Property Tax Rates
City 0.8850% For Two Previous Years
County 0.6880% 1997 1996
School 4.7980% 7.2640% 6.9860%
Other(s) 0.8550%
Total 7.2260%

We pay $3,500 for 860 square feet which includes closets, patio, and the laundry room. Oh forgot to add we purchased for $180K and its probably worth around $170K at the moment. If they were going to lower anything, I haven't seen it. It's been down for about 1.5 years now.

I believe you multiply your property tax rate by the 33.3% (Illinois percentage) value of your home.

Our property tax is a little over 1% a year. Our friends who live a mile away but in the neighboring town pay about 2%. It really varies from town to town around where we live.
