How does resizing work?

So I tried on my new engagement ring this weekend and it's a little loose. I might be able to shake it off of my hand if I try really hard. I'd like to go down a quarter size or so but I'm worried that it might affect the shape of the ring.

This is my ring (Sholdt semi-bezel):

Will the "after" picture of my ring look the same? Can you tell when a ring has been resized? The reason I ask is because I can definitely live with the ring being a little bit too big, and I don't want to risk the ring looking different after resizing. The reason I love my ring is because the shank is so fluid all the way around - I don't want anything to disrupt that.

Any advice? Thanks so much!

I might be wrong but if you think you could shake it off your hand it is likely more than a quarter-size too large. Regardless, I do want to ask, will this ring be worn with a band? Is it already warm weather where you live? If you will be adding a band or if the weather is not yet summertime-warm, you may want to wait a while before deciding to resize the Sholdt... either or both of these factors may affect how your ring fits on your finger.

Talk to your jeweler about it. A quarter size is well within the range of the time of day, day of month and the temperature. In general, it's better for most people to be a little on the tight side rather than a little on the loose side but I agree, if you could shake it off of you're hand, this sounds like more than a quarter of a size.

That's not a particularly easy ring to size by the way. Go back to whoever sold it to you, not to a randomly chosen jeweler in the sizing business. There is a risk of losing the center stone by changing the shape of the ring and it's sure to void your warranty if you have someone else work on it.

what about some sizing beads?

Thanks to all for your responses! I got the setting done by Sholdt here in Seattle, so I'll discuss possible resizing with them when it comes time to get a wedding band. I will be wearing a band with it.

If resizing is an issue, I'll look into sizing beads. My problem is that I have really small knuckles so they don't hold the ring in place. I'm worried I'll get the "sausage finger" effect when I go down in size.

Hi sortmon....just chiming in to say that FWIW I just got my ER sized a half size down and did not notice any difference in the shape or fluidity. I also felt like if I had shaken my hand hard enough the ring could have come off...turns out my ring was a 5.5 even though we had originally requested a 5. It still feels a teeny bit loose, but much better than before, and I think I still have room for some swelling and to account for a band later on. I was also told to look into sizing beads....I might do this down the line if I decide I want it a little more snug.

Thanks for the response, BeeCushion! Can you tell the ring has been resized at all? Is there a little line where they took out the metal and then welded it back together? I don't want any lines to show, even if it's on the palm part of the ring.

Happy to report that I went to Sholdt and they were able to get the ring resized for me in 30 minutes. I went down a little more than a quarter size, but there's no visible change to the shape of the ring. You can't tell it's been resized at all! Very pleased with the result.

I would recommend waiting at least till it is summer (unless it is already hot/humid where you are). In the winter (or even cold weather now), post-coffee, my ring is really loose and spins and could potentially slip off. In the summer, or when my fingers are really swollen from salty food or flying, or a combo of all three, the ring ranges from fitting to being slightly tight. Especially since it could be tricky to resize, I would give it a couple of months (if youre in the northern hemisphere).

Thanks for the advice! It's still a little loose and slides a bit after the resizing so I think it will accommodate the summer/sodium swelling. I just feel that it's a lot more secure now. Sholdt say that it's very easy to resize (probably as long as the change isn't drastic) if I need to do it again in the future.
